First Timer Maintenance on my Royal Enfield Meteor 350 ! 💙

Had a go at some maintenance, because apparently that's important! So I degreased and re-greased the chain, checked the air filter and cleaned the spark plug!

Hi, if you don't mind me giving you a few points, first thing when you are spraying the chair cleaner on use a piece of cardboard behind the chain and in front of the wheel and tyre, as you really don't want to be spraying your tyre, also as to when do you know when you have been around the chain, always start from the split link and when it comes back around you'll have done the whole thing, once you have done that, use the brush on the bottom of the chain having sprayed the brush with the chain cleaner, put it on the bottom of the chain push up with the brush and turn the rear wheel, then wipe your chain down with a lint free cloth, once it's dry, leave it for 5 minutes to dry by the way, the re lube it. And well done for get ya hands dirty and doing it 👍🏻

Excellent video! You performed more maintenance than most people are capable of! The thing to look for with sprocket teeth is are they symmetrical? If they start to look like little shark or dolphin 🐬 fins, it’s time for a new one. While you’re down there you want to check the tension of the chain. Since cameras tend to distort the image I won’t say your chain is loose but it kind of looked like it in the video. The procedure is spelled out in a Royal Enfield video but it’s basically, measure the sag, loosen the axle nut tighten the Allen bolts on the adjusters until the chain is correct, then tighten the axle nut. I always give the adjuster bolts an extra tweak once the axle nut is tight. If your axle was properly aligned before you started, it is safe to turn both adjusters the same amount. Not more than 1/2 turn at a time. The proper way to clean a spark plug is using a special sand blaster that’s made for the job. Most people just replace them before they get around to cleaning them. What you are inspecting is the ceramic insulation (cone) around the center electrode. Black or oily is a bad sign. Less common but also a problem is white deposits. Yours was a perfect light tan. Use that as the example for future reference. Congratulations on a job well done!

As a motorcyclist of 46 yrs. my most hated job is chain cleaning, I have tried so many methods. However the one I use which I feel is not messy and very little time consuming is this. Its also very inexpensive as most cleaners and lubes are a rip off. Try this it wont cost much. Buy some paraffin off u tube or diy store. Tip some in a bowl. Wear gloves, soak a rag and rub chain to get worst off you will be amazed. Also cover your tyres with something. Paraffin does not attack the o rings in the chain either. Then get a brush and work the paraffin in the crap will dissolve. Put some cardboard under for drips. Wipe with clean rag and let dry then wash off and dry and lube.It will be like new. I keep my paraffin soaked rag in an old lunch box and it stays moist and can resume anytime. Its the fastest and least messy method and imo gets the crud off incredibly easily. Watch Fort Nines vlog on here about chain lubes. Very scientific but msg is don’t waste ur money. The beauty of paint brush method is you can do belly pan front and rear cogs too at the same time. Just keep off the tyres at all cost but if you get some on wire wool it off. Looks like ur chain needed adjusting, you have already started your maintenance journey and the chain is easy and more times you do it the more confidence you will get. Always check the oil on RE bikes. Love the colour of your meteor

Well done. Personally I would not allow the degreasing and lubricant spray anywhere my tyres or wheels. I always make use of a large piece of cardboard behind the chain to act as a spray and splash guard. On my Meteor 350 I also make a point of checking, and adjusting as necessary, the chain tension when I clean and lubricate it.

Good job. I do everything on my kymco like. Spark plug , air filter, motor oil, gear oil, fuel filter. Now I have a new meteor under warranty, so get the mechanic to do it all. But when the warranty runs out, I'll do everything myself. Good on you 😊

As has been previously said, it's the inside of the air filter that needs checked. You'll notice the plastic cap with the 3 screws has a bell shaped hole that sucks the air in. It then passed through the filter and into the engine. It'll look the same on most bikes these days, slightly different shapes, but they all have a cover with bell mouthed sooker. 👍 The next 2 most important things are, 1: check the oil level is correct. You're owners manual will show you how. 2: Adjust the chain. Again it'll be in the owners manual, and there's plenty videos on KZbin showing you how to do it. If a chain gets too slack it can bounce off the sprocket and get jammed in the wheel. Other than that, kudos for getting your hands and "What the fuck is that" face dirty. 🤣🤣

Ah, shade tree mechanic maintenance. I was a completely unhandy middle class guy in his late 20's who had never anything automotive beyond helping with washing my dad's car. Doing my first successful maintenance task was awesome. Really screwing up my second less so, but a learning experience. I admit that these days I just give it to the mechanics. My BV 350 is much less maintenance friendly than a Royal Enfield. Even replacing the headlamp bulb is nine assholes to do.

good job done. i don't know if you have noticed, but at 8:20 and later we can see drops of water leaking by the plug wire. and as it was said by others, don't do like me and be carefull to protect your rear tyre before lubing your chain. You may have check the gap of your plug with gage, the right gap must be mentioned on the user guide or workbook. You can also use graphite grease on your plug and it must be tightened as a recommendend torque, no need to overtightnen it.

I learned from experience that if you ride off-road or do alot of road mileage in all weathers you’ll inevitably pick up bits of dirt and grit in your spark plug well. If you can, blow the grit and dirt out with an airline or compressed air can or even a drinks straw before taking out the spark plug to prevent any harmful cr@p from falling into the cylinder when you take out the plug. If you can get a spark plug well infil or gator get one as it’ll stop a lot of the large bits getting in and also rain/road water which can cause a short across the lead to the head and cause your engine to cut out.

Great job on maintenance. When I got my Honda Shadow, warranty was one time, afterwards I could do it myself or taking in to the shop. But still have the warranty. At the time the maintenance was around $300, I believe. It's good to learn about your own bike. Makes you a better ride, safe ride, and have more fun. Ride safe.

Could be a worthwhile investment seeing if you can do a maintenance course at your local college or even better, ask your local,friendly bike shop if they will teach you some pointers. Good solid basic maintenance there. II'm sure if we checked the spark plug every time the chain was lubed, there would be fewer breakdowns. At the risk of sounding like a knowledgeable bloke (I'm really not, if I was a superhero, I'd be Captain Clumsy...) It's a good idea to put something like a decorating sheet under the bike to catch all the crud that comes off. Helps to keep the SO happy. Also, greetings from Cornwall and a fellow NHS worker. 🤟😊

They actually gave you a spark plug wrench that fits the plug. Sadly mine doesn’t. Allen wrench is the wrong size for the panel over the air filter too, which I found out late one night by the side of the road trying to diagnose why the engine was running poorly. But I digress. I love that you used the RE tool roll and not several hundred pounds worth of top-end socket set, torque wrench, etc. I’m assuming your logic was ‘these are the tools provided so why use anything else’ which seems fair enough 👍 V commendable! Spark Plugs just need the right feeler gage placed in the gap, then gently tapped until it squeezes the qage.... Job done. Tappets are similar but you need to make sure your pistol is just short of top direct center, then set the gap on those too. On a single cylinder its easy. You do that by putting a screw driver down the spark plug hole and slowly kick the engine over until the piston is nearly at the top and about to start going down. Then set the tappets and timing as needed. Dont forget to change the oil :)

I watched this video because I'm about to take delivery of my Meteor. Very informative. Thanks. There is something I do when taking out the spark plug is to put a spot of grease or oil on the threads before putting it back. It makes it easier to get out next time. Also I would invest in a spark plug brush for cleaning it. It's a little wire brush. It'll do a better job than a cloth. The gap will get wider with use so you do need to check the gap.

@@restdayrider I can't wait for it to arrive! I had a test ride on the Himalayan but I couldn't get on with the foot peg position. They are set too far back for me, so my knees are bent more than on other bikes and I've had knee problems for years. The crush washer is very difficult to take off! So you almost certainly put it back anyway. Yes to the feeler gauges.

Hi, just a tip, I always put a spot of grease or engine oil on scews/bolts before refitting. I find this aids removal in the future. Better still use anti seize paste especially on hot fixings. Spark plugs tell a story of how your engine is running. Take a pic or youirs as it looks fine. Black is too rich fuel white too weak. Oh and always carry a spare.

select one chain link, clean it with white spirt or something similar, dry it off, then paint a good dab of red/pink nail varnish on the outside of it, now you have a marker to let you know you have revolved the chain round once, it will stay on for years.

Nice little video, half the benefit of doing these little jobs is that if anything else is awry in the area you are working on it will be discovered. My meteor is red, and still running in, but the dealer assured me red ones go 10mph faster😉

Something that doesn't get talked about nearly enough are (Japanese Industrial Standard) JIS Screwdrivers. Tradition Phillips bits were designed to pop off the screw before they were over-tightened, this was at a time of factory/mass-production use and the screws were not intended to be removed; but as it became standard in general use we're now largely stuck with a driver bit that has a tenancy to strip screw heads. Enter the JIS, these bit drivers are shorter and less tapered and so seat better inside the screw head and don't pop out and so don't strip the head. So if you have a JIS or Phillips screws on your bike a JIS Screwdriver is the way to go.

The bike is produced in India ,it is highly unlikely to use JIS fasteners ,they are more likely to be slotted or standard Phillips .

Them aerosol chain lube tins are a right faff, you waste loads and to stop the risk getting it on brakes footrests and wherever you don't want it to go so I use engine oil, a jam jar and a 1" paintbrush with the bristles shortened and just paint the oil lightly on to the chain it's a load less messy and cheaper than spending out on those tins of wax. With the spark plug a bit of wet n dry and clean up between the gap is all you need do, mostly you'd only need to check the gap fitting a new plug (manual will tell you gap size) scrounge a feeler gauge off yer brother or dad .... cracking first attempt though

You can also make a note in your service book that you have checked your bike date, and what you have done check with your dealer for confirmation. And if you start to fully service your bike yourself then write it in the book and enfield will update there records But use oem parts and keep the parts invoice The invoice must show VAT when are you stripping the engine Enjoy 👍

Glad that you are considering an RE. for your next bike. I've returned to riding after a 35+ year gap. My wife passed away and my kids are grown up. Just be aware that RE's are not modern day sports bikes! It took me 3 new bikes over a 3 year period to find the Meteor. The Interceptor is brilliant and probably everything you will ever need in a bike, on UK roads. However, the Meteor and new Classics are so different to any other bike. There is nothing like pottering (say 45 to 55 mph) around country lanes with the torque letting you ride from 35 mph to flat out in 5th gear. The sound is music to your ears, especially when you remove the big collector box and cat's from the exhaust system. People just come and talk with you. I've had some lovely older blokes (I'm not a spring chicken me-self!) who come to chat over the bike. Ranging from - 'that's a lovely restoration' to 'I haven't seen one of those since the 60's'!

My Meteor is a 2021 model and I've decided, after the last bill that was more than a full service on the car, to do my own thing. It's only done 1900 miles! Also, I'm not convinced that the cables will be lubricated and the chain cleaned before greasing etc., by the dealer. Today, I fitted a DNA air filter and let that settle with running the bike on idle for 10-15 minutes. KZbin is great for this sort of thing! Tomorrow, I am hoping to fit a de-cat pipe, lower shocks and luggage rails. I say 'hoping' as what could possibly go wrong? The shocks are the big scary thing to undertake, especially as they are about an inch shorter than stock! From KZbin, I've just discovered that the early Meteors rely on part of the original exhaust to act as a bump stop for the centre stand! So that's the next scary job, to replace the centre stand with a modified one.... Another step towards confidence in looking after your ride. I have no experience in this type of thing but hey, watching the guys in India..... A penknife, screw driver, spanner and a bit of string is all you seem to need! It has become obvious, and as your air filter change with the RE toolkit demonstrated, that you need to invest in some good tools. I have bought a socket set, a set of spanners and some good quality screwdrivers and so far, the mods (screen etc) have been really straight forward. Great video, perhaps you will do more of your own servicing and post it so we can all benefit from doing our own servicing!

Well, the shocks went really well with me using a length of pipe to raise the rear wheel…… the only problem I have is some blowing between the down pipe and the de-cat pipe - I think I know why. So taking it off to refit. Feeling rather chuffed to be honest! We can do this stuff! Just look it all up and take your time.

Chain tension is a quite important one tbh and worth the effort, oh yeah and another little tip, with the chain adjustment when you check the free play, which is a bit over an inch of up Down travel, do it with the bikes weight on the chain, and if poss with you sat on it, granted this is a bit of a two person job, but if you adjust it on the main stand then take it off and sit on it I guarantee you that the chain will be tight as a nut

If you can, or want to, get a torque wrench and workshop manual , if youre going to keep the bike. Just so you dont overtighten any bolts. Especially if you have a go at changing the oil.

Regarding Chains, i found a little 3 in 1 oil was good enough. Sprocket teeth start to appear bent, as in like a wave when they start to wear out. At that point just replace the sprocket. If the chain becomes to slack and adjusting it appears to do nothing, replace the chain.

The lock is just a disc lock on the back wheel, with an elastic stretch to the bars to make sure you don't ride off with it attached. 😊

Good to see a lady get stuck in, if you don't try you will never learn. Although just one thing, you should have taken the outer end cover of the air filter element and checked the inside, that is where all the crud is court. Yes you should have checked the spark plug gap with feeler gauges and checked the colour should be light coffee colour. Good job, keep up the good work

I can not agree … Let’s be clear … it’s not 1975 anymore . Meteor has an electronic computerised fuel injection system, so there is totally no point to touch the spark plug at all, especially at 1700m on the clock. First , the “coffee colour” tip makes no sense as the bike is not carburated, and there is no way to adjust the idle fuel mixture on this bike (the incorrect colour shows that this adjustment is needed if your bike uses carburettor ) as the ECU of the bike does it automatically using oxygen lambda sensor readings . also mind that on modern spark plugs that have iridium or platinum electrodes you never use any feeler gauges and you never gap them as they are gaped when manufactured … touching the electrode with steel feeler gauge breaks the iridium or platinum layer and the spark plug the. can only be used as a Christmas tree ornament. Also it’s 21 century and when your spark plug is broken (yes they just break sometimes) you go to Halfords and buy a new one for about 15 pounds.

@@screemerek1 So how do you know if somethings wrong with the EFI/ECU/oxygen sensors etc. if you never touch the spark plug? Indeed, how do you know when new spark plugs are required. Just because something's new doesn't mean it's perfect. It may not be 1975 but the ability to read a spark plug is still important in 2022

@@UPTHETOWN I did not say it’s not important, it’s important when you have a malfunction, but checking the colour of electrode will not give you anything on efi as even if you have condition that makes your afr incorrect ecu will compensate it by adjusting injection and ignition timing. Then it will light up your MIL on the dash and this is your indicator of the malfunction. Then you need some kind of can/obd reader to check your error codes and live parameters. Yes you’re right to check if you need a new spark plug you have to take it out.

Hi, Excellent video. Well done! Here's a tip from someone who's broken spark plugs in the past. Try and find some foam or rubber pipe to fit into the plug spanner. It'll stop you cracking the porcelain.

@@peterwait641 Yep always done that too. I'll never forget the time I was out on a T140 chop I had and it suddenly went onto one. Luckily the plug cap still had the plug in when I stopped. It had stripped the thread.

Well done you, you're an inspiration and I hope people follow your example.. Most people either just don't bother or pay someone to do it. I love my my Meteor and have always done my own spattering. One thing I've learned in over 40 years of bike ownership is that chain lube in cans is fine but expensive snake oil. I keep a small amount of old engine oil, new is fine. Clean the chain then apply the oil and use a rag wipe off the excess. There are lots of videos about this verses the more expensive stuff and it's all personal choice. Also don't struggle with the wrong tools, sometimes you need the right tool for the job. They're aren't expensive and no need to buy a set full of stuff you probably won't use. Just buy the one you need, it can make life so much easier.

Hi! Several commenters have touched on cleaning and lubing the chain so i will leave that. But.... Get a can of breakcleaner just in case you need it next time. Remember to NEVER EVER fall for the temptation to rotate the rear wheel, while cleaning, by having it running in first gear on the centerstand. That is a proven way to loose fingers, for real! Note on the air filter: It is the inside that´s gets dirty i believe.... Good luck next time! An independant biker is a happy biker, drive safe.

With respect, if the inside of an air filter is dirty and the outside clean I'd guess you have a major problem. Possibly a worn inlet valve blowing back. An air filter will be dusty/dirty on the outside 'cause it's there to keep the dirt out. As part of your tools I'd suggest getting a magnetic screw/bolt/washer dish to pop the screws in. If you drop three screws on the floor one of them WILL end up in the next county, down a drain, somewhere inside the frame etc. Keep learning and take care.

Looking at your air filter intake the dirt will be on the inside of the filter not the outside.

It’s easy to check if you covered whole chain in meteor as one link (master link) has a bit different colour (I found that first time I was cleaning mine). Also good choice with brand of your cleaner and lube, I prefer the non dry one actually, as dry muck off leaves the ugly white residue. Also I found on the video you may have a frozen link on your chain … might be a manufacturing issue.

@@restdayrider it might be just my imagination or the angle of your video, but to check it ... just inspect all the links by hand - if all the links move freely when twisted/rotated then everything is ok, if any link stays in the position when you wiggle the chain then .... the chain should be replaced. Your total mileage is pretty low, so this should not happen (my bike has almost twice on the clock and no problems with chain, forzen links usually happen after 20k on the clock, but ...Im talking japanese bikes with DID chain.... Enfield may use some chaper brand that may be not same quality) As I said its hard to see it on the video - may be just camera angle.

Well done, the more you learn about your own bike and especially about servicing then the cheaper running costs are for you. If you get the chance have a look at adult education classes in your area, you maybe lucky and find a motorcycle maintenance class which can be a big help. As far as tools go the right ones make the job easier, the factory fitted air filter cover screws would have come out more easily with a tee handled philips screw driver, less effort needed and more purchase on the screw head, also a basic set of metric combination spanners, 8mm to 19mm, ring spanner one end, open ended spanner at the other....eBay is a good place to look. Nothing like rolling your sleeves up and getting your hands mucky.

Motorways it keeps up with the traffic, but of a rumble through the pegs at 70mph. Cruising is it's sweet spot, and she loves 55-60 all day long.

@@restdayrider Same as mine. These bikes won't really do more than 70mph. they are limited to about that speed. Lots of mid range torque there for accelerating up to their 50-60 mph sweet spot though.

Well, I think you did a little error in reasoning when evaluating the air-filter. The dirty side of an air-fimter is where the air comes in. You just checked the outer side. In this case the clean side, which is facing to the engine's intake. I know, most classic air-filters in cars operate the other way - but not in case of your Meteor.
