Restoration of a Seiko Watch. An historically important wristwatch. This time I restore a 1970s Seiko Quartz watch with the 7546 movement. These watches are historically important as they were the very wristwatches that rocked the whole wristwatch industry back in the mid 1970s. Mass job losses resulted in Swizterland when these early Seiko watches hit the market.
I am a very big fan of these early Seiko Quartz watches. They are very nicely built and retain a lot of similarity with their immediate mechanical predecessors. It's as if the guys at Seiko just took their already successful mechanical designs and merely retro fitted a quartz power pack. The torque in the power train is much lower than a mechanical watch and this makes the going train very fine and tricky to work with.
I do almost no talking in this video and just let the action on screen tell the story

Very nice. Nothing like a quartz watch for continuous accuracy, light weight on the wrist, thin case, lower price, and with this Seiko, an attractive appearance!

Still have my blue face 4004 from 1978 I bought as a teenager with my grass cutting earnings. It’s been all over the world with me, and was even lost in a friend’s couch for two years. Would love to have it restored.

While I do love mechanical watches just for the "cool factor" that they tend to have, I also love the relative simplicity of a quartz watch and the fact that they just work when you need them to.

Nice restoration 👍, in Japan (JDM version) they sold this watch with this caliber in many many many different styles and dial collers under the name Seiko TYPEII, the export models where stamped on the dial and bracelet with the SQ logo what means Seiko Quartz. The 7546 movement a very good movement most made of metal and almost no plastic love it.

That's one beautiful movement! It's so rare to see one quartz disassembled like that. I own a citizen quartz from the 80s and I wonder how it looks on the inside, but I have never opened it. I suppose that it looks similar to this seiko :)

There's a great deal of snobbery aimed at quartz watches, I love mechanical and automatic movements but I also have three Elliot Brown watches which have Ronda Swiss 5 Jewel Quartz movements, the Holton Professional is an issue watch to the Special Boat Service and has the Broad Areow and a NATO issue number. I also own a Bulova Lunar Pilot which is wonderful and has Bulovas very high frequency quartz movement which is super accurate and has historical value as a movement. Solar powered G Shocks aside I also own a Yes World Watch Version 7 which is powered by a Ronda again and has a custom.made module that means the watch is essentially the 17th C Astronomical Clock found at Durham Cathedral, it is a self contained astronomical device, simply awesome, designed and hand built.

Thanks for the inside view Richard - I've been wearing a Seiko SQ 'Railroad Approved' and really helped me appreciate what's going on in the movement! Hits the indices better than watches 5x their price point and 50 years older.

I can't believe it. My father died 16 years ago and I remember him replacing a Bulova wristwatch he bought in the early 1960's in New York with this exact same Seiko SQ watch. It's identical, he had that watch for 30 years. Unfortunately it's dead now, I tried replacing the battery but it wouldn't restart. I would love to get it repaired/restored as a momento of my late father. You did some lovely work and the watch looks fantastic now. Superb video, thank you for posting it.

I've seen the yellow Invicta's box on your workbench and the gorgeous watch on your wrist (a seikomatic diashock day date, perhaps?) and I'm happy, despite the hard day at work! The care you put in protecting the watch, even one of a more "humble" origins, like the one in this video, it's a sign of the profound respect for the customer and of the care you put in your precise and very professional beautiful job! Great macros, unmatched skills and passion, I think it is the right mix for a succesful youtube channel like yours! Keep up the great work! I'd like to live near your working location, to admire you working on a watch more frequently, but I can't, i hope one day to meet you in person to thank you with my approximative English speaking dialog capabilities, for all the beautiful moments spent in watching your great videos, rich in particulars and passion. Nice video loved the old Quartz. The oldest watch I have is a 45-year-old Pioneer LCD. I know this isn't LCD but those old LCD's something about how those old things looked. Though I have some mechanical's, I use quartz a bit more often, mostly G-Shocks with the connected engine because when cooking, it's so easy to set multiple alarms and timers just in case I forget something while at work. Wonderful video as always. ⌚👍🏾👌😁

The 754x is one of the best quartz movements made by anyone. Ever. Gotta be careful putting on the circlip for the day wheel. One side of it is chamfered so you can get a screwdriver under it to pry it off. If it is put on upside down it is a pain to get off next time.
