Holy shit, we are not a common enough breed. I grew up with Voltron and Speed Racer before Sci-Fi started it’s anime block, but it was the first time the idea of some animated shows and movies being different, and sure enough the adult themes and creative stories set “anime” apart from everything else I had seen as a kid. Sci-Fi started a lifelong obsession haha.

Robot Carnival was a collection of animated shorts by different renowned animation directors of the day, each based on a robot theme. Only two of the eight segments would have any proper dialog. The rest could almost be compared to Disney's Fantasia in a way. Most have a narrative through line, but a couple are really just music and visuals.

It reminds you just how much things have changed in terms of the type of animation, the look, how they tried to make things look so more distinct and I would almost say realistic back then. As opposed to now where everything just literally looks like some sort of extremely bright hyperactive cartoon. Like Looney Toons with fan service beach episodes.

God there were so many satisfying effects in this one: like the one bot's tentacle tearing through the floor towards the hero, the way the pirate captain points at the guy and when his eye laser sweeps across his body

They literally don't make them like this anymore, in fact given the type of animation used now and the bizarre Shounen Jump kind of stuff they have now, I would almost argue they can't make them like this anymore. Things like Robotech, Robot Carnival, Kimagure Orange Road, it just doesn't exist anymore.

I like the animation in this. You can feel the difference between this and syndication shows. They did a good job in conveying what's going on without having any actual dialog. On a different note, can we agree that SyFy is a stupid name.

There is a lot of other good stuff. The problem is only when your exposure to it is from a singular source, or whatever happens to be popular in a certain region. In Japan, the market is so broad that it is incredibly unfair (if not absolutely disingenuous) to label it all with a single descriptor. So much good stuff slipped through the cracks in favor of what was more likely to sell, and some would never see the light of day in most countries. It is very unfortunate indeed. Golden rule though, never go only by mainstream popularity. Even back then it was horribly skewed.
