The problem with these handhelds is that the company just keep releasing them until they get a 'hit' like the Steam Deck or ROG. But the problem is, they will never get that because most people dont trust a company that doesnt stick by a console. Even Valve knew this, by confirming they wont be releasing a Steam Deck 2 for at least a year or so, because you need to get peoples trust that you can actually support a product before moving onto the next.
@Jhud6910 ай бұрын
When it comes to niche PC companies I kind of trust Ayn more than Ayaneo. They have a legit site, not THAT many models (their lineup is reasonable with budget, mid tier and pro versions) and they adjust the price of their handhelds, I heard some models come with issues but they seem to be good with customer service. AND their prices aren’t as outrageous as Ayaneo’s as well. They had a blunder with shipping times sure but well I had to wait for my first Steam Deck for over a year too. And I just find it weird that Ayaneo’s main website doesn’t work for everyone - I can access only their shopify that has only a handful of their products with massive discounts but apparently it’s legit?

@Swenglish10 ай бұрын
The ability to angle the screen is definitely a huge plus (the main reason the GPD Win 3 just isn't comfortable for me to use is that the controller and screen are at the same angle), but I'm still glad I chose the GPD Win Mini. It's a bit large, but I can fit it in the inner pocket of three different jackets *with* the grips on, so it's pocketable enough for me.
@massivepileup10 ай бұрын
I think it's the clamshell design that makes the Mini more pocketable, with these slide handhelds the screen and sticks are still exposed and I always want to keep them in a protective case which of course makes them a lot bigger.
@Swenglish10 ай бұрын
@@massivepileup I wouldn't put the Win Mini in a *pants* pocket (especially with grips attached), only an inner jacket pocket or hoodie pouch, but yeah, and in addition to protecting the screen and encasing the sticks, the clamshell design allows for the width of the screen to be just about the width of the whole device. With a slide-out design (much like with a PSP/GBA style design), screen size has to be sacrificed to make room for controls unless the controls are hidden under the sliding part...which seems pretty pointless, since you might as well just put a hinge on it at that point and have built-in screen protection and fully adjustable viewing angle. Having owned the Win 3 for a while, I have concluded that the slide-out design is completely pointless. I don't know why they didn't just put a hinge on it. I'm glad they went back to the hinge for the Win Mini, because it's better in every single way I can think of. And I don't know why Ayaneo is jumping on the slide wagon. I respect that they added an angle adjustment feature, but they might as well have just made it clamshell. I don't know what the reasoning is behind going with an obviously inferior design. It's just exposing the screen and sticks for no reason at this point. I understand putting controls on the sides when there isn't a keyboard, especially with cheaper, lightweight devices. Once you add the keyboard and the weight of PC guts, you might as well go clamshell. It's just better for so many reasons.
@The_Shock_and_Awe10 ай бұрын

GPD Win 4 Owner here - missing the mouse nub is a massive oversight and definitely renders the keyboard kinda useless as you explained. I already mishit the top row of buttons with the screen slid up, adding more up there seems like a bad move. Finally I think they whiffed on the screen implementation. Not being flush seems like the wrong choice, and it slides too high up. I get it allows for the angling but that's probably why it felt so flimsy. The gpd win 4 screen only extends roughly 40% above the device, but this is closer to 66-70%. I think they should keep iterating but I wouldn't trade in my win 4 for this. Great video!

The control issues are certainly strange - it can't be the game getting confused because there is a controller and a keyboard at the same time because I am not in the habit of unplugging the keyboard of my desktop whenever I want to use a controller. This is something they messed up specifically with this device, not a standard game or windows issue.
@primalconvoy10 ай бұрын
On Android, some older games/code/game engines have a bug where any attached keyboards are automatically assigned as "Controller 1" and the main controller as "Controller 2". This then means said games won't support the second controller and thus any controllers.

I really do not understand the "these companies release 5 handhelds per microsecond" complaints on every single review of anything but the Deck/Ally/Legion Go. Ayaneo, GPD, OneXPlayer/OneNetbook, etc. have been at this for YEARS before more western-reachable tech entered the market. It is obvious Valve wants to keep the Deck and the OLEDeck alive as much as possible, and that is a valid business strategy; these other companies do not follow that methodology and yet it still works for them. Is a matter of launching as many diverse devices as possible until that lineup is pretty much set and always appeal to the same market demographic, which in this case is mostly Asia. I am not going to say that the Deck is bad by any means of the imagination, in fact both are excellent, but those are products for another demographic and, yes, these 5 handhelds per microsecond companies actually sell these devices. Not to mention that Valve, Asus and Lenovo do a terrible job at reaching less populated markets. Must admit that getting the Slide before the Flip KB or Flip DS is a bit of a shame but it looks like quite a nice device nonetheless. Keep it up Russ, thanks for the review!

They cannot, the technology is at a dead corner density wise. However, solid state batteries should be released within the next 1-5 years. Depending on how many stable layers they can implement, the energy density will be between 1.5-5x times the density we have now, with the upside of it not degrading due those batteries not using a solvent for the lithium crystals. In other words, within 5 years we should see electronics doubling the use time. If not better (they could do better but it would not be economical)

The Win Mini's mouse/controller toggle, like the one on previous GPD machines, doesn't disable the keyboard (or the touch pad). It just disables the controller when set to mouse mode. Disabling the keyboard makes no sense anyway, any desktop or laptop PC is going to have a keyboard connected while you play games on a controller. Games may switch to keyboard and mouse mode when you press a key or click and some don't accept it if the controller is plugged in after the game has started but the presence of a keyboard should never interfere with anything. Whatever is happening with Witcher and GoW must be something else.

Everyone wants to be careful with their expensive hardware, but let me tell you, just days after getting my N3DS and heading back to college, my roommate managed to trip over my charging cable and fling my N3DS across the room (we had only one outlet in the room and it was in the walkway, because cheap-ass dorms). It's a surprisingly durable system and thankfully didn't go tumbling around, so no damage to it whatsoever, but imagine if that happened with your giant clunky slide-out handheld device? While the screen's out, this thing would absolutely split apart or at least the contacts/cords inside the rails would get damaged. Even the old-school DS Lite eventually broke the plastic hinges just from opening and closing it a ton of times (mine lasted all the way from early high school until a couple years ago, probably about a decade or more, but even I had it happen to me eventually while replaying some Pokemon games). Wear happens, too, and the more moving parts, the more complex the machinery, the more susceptible it becomes to issues. I *love* the idea of a slide-out keyboard on a device like this, it has its perks... but for $1k? This thing is absolutely gonna break, I hope whoever buys it is prepared to pay out the ass for repairs or a replacement. You have to have serious cash to burn to get something like this, it's not even just about getting one, it's about the cost of replacement, repairs or alternative models down the line if this one starts to have problems and you can't justify using it anymore.

I dropped mine 3 times still intact though 1 button broke but easy to put back just glue it in

I have a gpd win 4 already, and there are definitely aspects of the slide that would make me consider it over the win4 if I were choosing between the 2 now. However I’d still go with the win 4 simply due to the better analog sticks.

Been following you for a while and I like your videos. I got the Miyoo mini plus with onion OS, but I would like to get something more powerful. I want it to be able to play N64 and PS2. I love playing Conker, Ratchet, Jak and more. Does not need to be perfect. So my question is this. Which one would you recommend for N64 and PS2?

That keyboard gives of the 360 controller keyboard attachment vibes

Re games getting confused with the controls, maybe they could implement a workaround that would switch the keyboard off if the screen was in the closed position.

These devices are getting so close to perfection. As soon as there's something in this form factor with dual boot into Android and Windows, a SIM card slot, microphone and a decent camera (could be on the back of the slide out) I'm ditching everything thing else and just carrying that around. If LG would just come back into the phone game to partner with one of these companies and pair the best smartphone features and make a really good all in one device it would be a shut up and take my money situation. I think they would make a killing.

So far away from perfection i mean as long as they don't provide a long battery life there is still something missing
@clintbizzle10 ай бұрын
@@The_Shock_and_Awe I agree about the battery life however I dont think it's an insurmountable challenge, especially if your using the device properly. I more mean in terms of form factor. I believe a mix of the AYANEO Slide(i freaking love the slide out keyboard) and something like the GPD Win Mini with some of the features i mentioned above would stand a very good chance of killing 3 devices, my phone, handheld game device, and laptop (coming from an average laptop user that doesn't rely on it for for a job that needs heavy photo/video editing or other large processing functions). CPUs in Flagship phones these days are really impressive and getting better each year. Enough to get really really good emulation of systems all the way up to nintendo switch and outstanding performance for native games, photo/video editing, and almost any other function you would want from a decent computer. As for battery life, you could greatly improve this by streaming any heavy hitting games from your home computer. Another function that's only getting better with time. Sure you would take a bit of a quality and latency hit but isn't that worth it to play away from home? I'd rather be playing away for a long period of time with a slight hit in quality than only have 1-2 hours of really warm device AAA gaming. Anyways it's just what I would like to see. Like I said before it would definitely take one of the big companies (Samsung, LG, Motorola, ect...) to get behind this type of device to maximise performance and value. Partnering with one of these handheld companies to make a all in one device that knocks everyone's socks off would be awesome.

Bro, the exposed slide mechanism from the back view looks risky after extended use 😮

does it have a menu option to choose between control / mouse, like on the ally?

This thing seems super fun for indie game development. Like this is the perfect device for playing around in pico8 or RPGMaker. Maybe if uh, they had a 4GB ram model and more economic CPU to get it under $350... This entire comment section is "cool, but I'm too broke for this" and I am also a part of this comment section

High-end handhelds are just very niche products. I love the idea of the "perfect" handheld, but unless you're rich and have a shitload of money to blow, you aren't going to be getting handhelds like this but once in your lifetime. Honestly, unless you *really* need the portability, most people are better off just getting a regular PC and finding a streaming option. Way more affordable and similar results.

@Lucifronz This has been the problem I'm having. I want something joyful and novel, almost a sketchpad for design to take around. But it's hard to justify something like this or building a cyberdeck when I can get a refurbished thinkbook for less than $200.

I can't justify this at all, but I really want one
