What a great project 👏. And the price can't be beat. Curious what machine you used for the trade? Let us know. I suspect a fueling issue. The aftermarket exhaust,, not 👎. Now,, regarding the faring. Considering the expense and its specialty (Rocket only),, selling it would be a possibility. But,, with your skills in the Paint booth,, A complete respray of the bike to an Eye popping Colour,, faring included would be super cool 😎👍. Maybe a Pearl White or Root Beer Brown metallic. 🤩🤌jmho.

Del, my neighbour was a bike fanatic (like myself) and had a collection of bikes, which unfortunately all had to be kept outside as he had no garage facilities. The bikes in question were mainly KH Kawasaki 2 strokes triples, in fact he had one of each capacity from 250cc to 750cc. The only protection the bike had was a tarpaulin to try and protect them from the elements. He did however make his own protective anti-corrosion spray to help protect the bikes. He had a plant sprayer bottle and mixed up his own concoction of petrol and 2 stroke oil. He liberally sprayed the bikes with this mixture. After a few hours the petrol had evaporated away and the bike had a thin layer of 2 stroke oil covering the bike, including all the chrome and other brightwork. It certainly seemed to do the trick as the special mixture seemed to keep the corrosion at bay. Sad end to this story, after his relationship broke down he sold his house and went to live in Ireland (his mother and relatives all lived there). He would ring me occasionally for a chat and told me that he had met another woman there and everything was really going great. He even invited me over to stay for a holiday with them. Months later I had a phone call from his sister saying he was really poorly and not expected to recover. He passed away a few days later at the age of 42. I wish I could have taken up his offer of a holiday over in Ireland. It would have been great to meet up with him again and see what mischief we could have gotten up to.

I bought it at a time I was a young engineer and I feel into a few business start-ups and needless to say, I got so busy with work that the bike hardly got much travel. I just got done doing a complete clean up on it with the aid of your videos. @olenilsen4660Ай бұрын
7:07 - Quite purposedly so, I ´d like to add. I´ve got quite a few tractors of different ages, and they´re actually equipped with copper nuts on the exhaust, for this exact reason! If you try to loosen these by force, and it will not give, the nut will always break first, and the stud might still be salveageble. Clever use of material properties! Also, using materials that are lower on the galvanic scale, the "sacrificial" part will always suffer a lot of the corrosion that would otherwise hurt the more important one.

I’ve also had mine remapped (upped the ponies, torques, opened the secondary butterfly’s, upped the rev & speed limit, lowered the temp slightly that the fan turns on & corrected the speedo) & hit 225km/hr on the back straight of Pukekohe Park Raceway a few years back. As for the fairing, it's a hard NO from me. I am not a Harley guy, but even so I feel that these fairings with their tiny windshields look ridiculous. I'm not questioning their function in general - I have no basis in experience for that - and no doubt it's very well made, especially if it's built like a Corbin seat. If you do take it off you might be able to get some decent cash for it. But ultimately the decision is yours and if you choose to keep it on the bike I won't think less of you - honest! Take care, dear friends. Be well and ride safe.

Aero-Kroil has pulled my fat out of the fire on more than one occasion and is a staple in my garage. However, if you ever find yourself needing some, and it's late in the day and the stores are closed, I've found that a mixture of kerosene (paraffin in the UK) and Dexron III in equal parts is just as effective (and can be made for a fraction of what Kroil products cost). 8:00 - Dunno about that oil, but I did this with a 60cm (2ft) assembly which was one steel tube inside another, about 3/4" thick. They were initially like one piece, I stood it upright in a vise and sprayed it about 4-5 times while I was doing other things in the shop, think it was about 2 hours in total. Put a pipe wrench to it, and they came apart like nothing. So, I totally support Del here - Just be patient, and use a lot of lube. What I used is not what he showed here, but that´s not the point, either. But just use it, try carefully - if it seems to destructive for your purpose, leave it and just lube again.

I'm curious to see what your detailer can do. I have an older bike with similar looking chrome and I constantly chase the rust. I don't mind the fairing and I'm sure it does wonders to keep the wind down.
@ironlionmotorcyclesАй бұрын
There's quite a few people that own these that spend £1500 on a Zard exhaust and then at the point of mapping it decide to try to save a few hundred pounds and just download a map without having it properly tuned on a dyno which is mind boggling. It could just need to be remapped properly.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Blimey mate, in a week or so the dyno video will be out and you'll be amazed how right you are, bang on the nail!

Maaate, on the chrome try Coca Cola & fine steel wool. If you're planning on touring and for winter keep the batwing (in winter I use wind breakers on the hands only and in spring they come off as Sydney summer is 30º+ C), otherwise around town and Saturday & Sunday riding to a cafe & lunch with Penny on the back then jettison it.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Thanks mate, I've heard about coke and wire wool, plus coke and tin foil on chrome so will be giving that a try, am sure the valeters have some tricks up their sleeves! And we do get some hot summers here, but 30+ is rare!!

ditch the batwing fairing if its not your style! your bike! fund upgrades with proceeds from the fairing sale :) FWIW i think it looks terrible with the dual round headlights.

Awesome score of a new bike in the stable and I look forward to the many upcoming videos surrounding it!! To my eye she is a really great looking bike.....except for that bat-wing fairing! Now, I don't know which bike you've traded off for this but if you were gonna start using this for a long-range touring bike in place of the Gold Wing, you might want to keep that fairing on there!
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Good points well made Allen, but it certainly won't be a touring bike in that way... I have the Harley perfectly set up for that with a fairing and bags and it makes over 50mpg being a modern M8 engine... but these Rockets are not known for their economy! ... maybe half as much as the Harley, at best, and have you seen the price of our gas lol lol Have a great weekend there, keep safe, D&Px

Beautiful find Del, I say a small fly screen would probably look better on this machine. And maybe powder coat the chrome bits to black finish.
@andrewgent5887Ай бұрын
Not a fan of the batwing fairing but I think I would be patient and ride the bike with and without for a while just to see if function over form influences your final decision. ..it’s a beast of a bike and it’s going to be interesting to follow the restoration project/process.
@gregshort1955Ай бұрын
I agree. I ride Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster naked because I think the look will be spoiled by a fairing. Don't want a cop bike. But on open road riding at speed it would be a lot more comfortable to have a fairing, so it depends on what you want to use the bike for. Urban cruising = no fairing. Long distance touring = fairing.

Hi Delboy, I don't know if you have sea foam there but if you do per instructions put that in the tank. It has been out for many years and works great cleaning injectors and carbs. You will be amazed as I have seen it work. Just a suggestion. That's going to be an awesome bike. Best regards, Frank from Florida.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Hey Frank, thanks so much for that wonderful advice, I have heard of it and I'm sure it would work great... initially the plan is to run the bike over to a Dyno to identify the problem, we're going to put the injectors in to a cleaning solution and check the spray pattern and I'd say sea foam is a great way to flush out the tank... thanks for the heads up!

This should be a fun project, Del. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with the bike. And I'm anxious to see the restoration process on that old chrome, too. As for the fairing, yes as fairings goes it's high quality, but IMO, it's just not the right fit for that bike. I think you could do something far more minimalist that would be a better fit for the styling on this bike. Just my .02. Either way, really looking forward to the project! Take care... --D

Del, Nice ride, sounds like the injectors are dirty. Throw a bottle of a good injector cleaner with some fresh fuel and ride it. Might be a real easy fix. Good luck with your project.. Oh and get some Dunlop mutants on there, they would be awesome on that bike.. cheers.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Thanks Rick, I'm making some plans with the Dyno guy, we're going to drop the injectors in a cleaning tank, then check the spray pattern on them just to be sure... and also I think that leak is always playing it's part in it too, so may whip the system off before I go and seal it up properly, no point it taking it there with a known fault I can fix! And with the tyres, I love Mutants, but sadly not available in these giant sizes... in fact at the moment, only 1 tyre is!
@rickbrown7067Ай бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 Drats on the tyres, wish you the best of luck on getting those injectors out. I used kroil oil a lot in the aircraft industry. Airplanes get a lot of corroded screws and bolts. We also used it for a corrosion prohibter on bolts and screws going back on, like antiseze. Works great.. giving you and Penny the best.

Mmm, loose the fairing. I'd love to ride a Rocket 3, not sure I want to own one. I had some heath issues some time back, what I thought would be a few months became 5-6 years. I don't know, bro. The batwing is a little too Harley-ish. But having two headlights, it really looks like Darth Vader's helmet. In the end, it's up to you whether you keep it on the bike, but me...? If it is that pricey, I'd sell it to pay for a rechrome, if needed.

The fairing is kind of both too much and not enough. If one’s into the bagger look, you could make it work and go all in with matching saddlebags and all the bagger bells and whistles. But I think for the bagger style to work it has to be all in, and way over the top in Hot Wheels kind of way. For KZbin videos that could be cool, and I’m sure you could pull it off. If you’re into the bagger style and the rocket is a bike you’re keeping long term, you could even justify the cost. If its not a bike you have long term plans for, sell the fairing, Get a flyscreen and spend the rest of the money on polishing up the chrome. If its too far gone I would consider powdercoating it too and go for a blacked out aggressive look. What a score of a bike.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Thanks mate.. that's quite a plan.. the Rocket Touring already exists, all the bells and whistles, even more chrome, and this being a Roadster makes that a lot of expensive work and parts... but maybe some kind of half way minimal bagger like the F6B..!!!
@dimadeeАй бұрын
I’m not loving the fairing. It makes it look heavy and frumpy like a Harley. The Rocket is such a unique looking bike it is a bit of a shame to cover it up with a lump of black. I also think the Rockets look so much nicer on a colour rather than black. Maybe consider a colour change to make it beautiful? Looking forward to the Dino and root cause on the stutter.
