It's an old interview but still very much relevant. Good job, Professor Dawkins 👏🏻 Keep shining a light on reason and giving fundamentalism a run for its money. Keep up the incredible work! Your voice is a beacon of rationality in a complex and often dogmatic landscape! I love you so much ❤

Scary how the minister keeps avoiding the "hard" questions. I truly wonder why he seems so uneasy and/or unwilling to discuss Richard's inquiries... hiding, perhaps? Or secretly sure that even he doesn't fully understand what he preaches?

The suffering of Christ, and the punishment of what is portrayed as an ethical guy seems to have had some impact to a very limited extent on Western culture. Of course I think that as an atheist there is no supernatural truth to this image and theme. And the benefits overall do not outweigh the negatives.

I wonder what this pastor's motivation was to agree to this interview? If he thinks this convinces people outside his branch of Christianity, he is deluded. Well, if he got one new follower, I guess it's a win these days, but you get the point. If he thinks this is a good way to show his followers how he is kind and good and how "well" he does in this, I either can't see it or he failed miserably. Or if he really thought he'd convince Dawkins, he should be monitored all the time, he'd be seriously crazy.

This guy is so creepy and evil with that gleeful smile he can’t control whenever he talks about sadism. He’s a sadist. And a money maker. If there are demons in human form he’s one. The “died for our sins” story makes no sense if you then say if you sin you have to go to hell. Logic and the innate sense of good rules my life. Reason is king.

I was raised in a Lutheran Church- went thru months of studies to be confirmed at 13 years old. During this I developed such nervous ticks like chewing my nails till my fingers bled, I was taught that I needed to fear God and sure was terrified of the things being said to me. I actually didn’t believe- I was a smart kid who instinctually knew what I was being told couldn’t possibly be true. For the past 50 years have lived a life full of contentment, a love of being kind, compassionate and helpful. Being an agnostic was never a question, I embraced atheism fully! I discovered Mr.Dawkins only a few years ago and admire, appreciate and value him❤

Interesting - but well, what can you do. Millions of people have this guys mindset. The thing is, fear works, it's potent and binds people into all sorts of dysfunctional relationship dynamics. This guy and his ilk promote the idea of an ever watchful and vengeful all powerful deity who would torture a person for all eternity for what could be considered, chiefly, petty crimes. It sounds like an abusive relationship and clearly traumatizes individuals. I view him as an abuser, but in his own mind, he is a liberator. It's just tragic that we live in such a confusing and divided world, but I don't see an easy answer, as these beliefs are impervious thanks to the "faith" card being played. I think it is a minority who leave the faith once indoctrinated.

It's important to show why and how religion is wrong, not just dismissing it. Debating against religious people shows the logical superiority of science over science. Which helps people develop critical thinking, opposite of religious thinking.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life (present), and shall not come into judgment (future), but has passed from death into life (past).” There are 66 books total. Please read John, Romans, 1 John, and Revelation. Use an accurate translation like the KJV, NKJV, or NASB. The only thing we have to do to be saved is believe in Him. The Son gave His life for us and rose from the dead so that we could live through Him.

“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭6‬:‭5‬-‭11‬

When I was 10, a neighbor girl invited me to her Southern Baptist Church for an "event". After the event, we were corralled into a gymnasium where adults were waiting with clipboards to take down our personal information. I panicked and ran for the doors. A woman chased after me. She cornered me and grabbed my arm, and I attacked her out of sheer panic. I was crying and hyperventilating and growling through clenched teeth as two men unfurled my fists from her hair. They pulled me to my feet, flanked either side of me, and without saying a word, they walked me over to a set of doors, opened them, and shoved me out. At 12, a van would drop a group of kids off at my house. They were strangers to me, but they knew who I was. I only opened the door the first time they showed up. They invited me to their church, I told them no and shut the door. They were there for another 20 minutes or so before the van came back to pick them up. They sat at my front door and chatted until it did. They showed up monthly after that. They would knock on the door, run around my house, peek in windows, and call out my name. The whole thing was so unpleasant that I started leaving my house out of a back door when they showed up. I noticed how taken aback this man was by the word "interference". He explained that kids are coming to them... they're not. In Texas, The Southern Baptists keep records on people's religious affiliations. Their recruiting tactics are very aggressive and entirely aimed at children.
