The 2004 Olympic team was set up to fail from the get go. USA basketball thought that if they threw a bunch of guys together, the gold would just fall into their lap. The organization did not understand how much the international game had evolved.

And in 2018 and 2020 they sucked. Its all about choosing good players, shooters. Even 2008 was not exactly balanced, 2012 also. The Gasol brothers were feasting and the US was always undersized. 2016 is an example how to crush competition in modern FIBA competition. Get Kyrie + Curry. You are kinda good from the getgo. Dont get players that REALLY WANNA PLAY but arent fitting the team, like e.g. Donovan Mitchell. A great player but a completely wrong choice.... Jayson Tatum. Just nooo. 2000 2002 2004 2006 all had some shitty performances 2000 did win the gold but Jasikevicius missed a game winning 3.... that team didnt dominate.

U could also argue that this was the height of how arrogant the US was in terms of bball. If the youngsters were actually experienced, it would've been a gold medal squad. Just with AI, Marbury, Marion, Boozer, Odom, and Duncan, they had a solid team; but really thin in terms of SG's and 3-point shooting. Larry would surely let him know just how much better he was in his prime. I'll never get his hatred of Larry legend. That much skill plays no matter the generation. Larry is basically Luka with a couple extra inches and a much better shot. N I'm sure JJ loves Luka

It's kinda weird that those players that he mentioned were willing to qualify for the Olympics but not compete at the Olympics the next year. I guess they didn't wanna go to Europe or something. That's the only explanation I can think of

Kinda funny that JJ is taking shots at Larry Bird (or that fool Mad Dog or whatever)… not even realizing that he’s basically going against himself! Yeah, RJ and Bird have pretty much the same 3pt percentages… and who in their right mind would pick Richard over Larry to shoot (a 3)?! C’mon now… Redick one of those people who only uses context when it suits his case! I’ll say it again, if we neglect context then - for example - Wilt is EASILY the best scorer ever! Nobody even came remotely close to 50 PPG! I bet JJ wouldn’t call Chamberlain the GOAT scorer… And I could be here all day… Plus, a fun fact: Bird - that inferior shooter - didn’t grow up with the 3pt-line (nor played in 3pt era)… and still, once had 22 out of 30 possible points IN THE FINAL ROUND of the 3pt contest (even hitting 11 shots in a row)! JJ Redick had 17 out of 34 possible points in 2015 and 20 out of 34 points in 2016 😅Both times bounced in the 1st round 😂

No one mentioning that they played/had no outside shooters. They werent able to space the defence and had to shoot everything from the inside of the 3 point line. Plus it's impossible to win any tournament if Melo is on your team.

RJ wasn't with Team USA in 2002 when they lost in the World Cup at Indiana. While they dominated the FIBA America Cup the following year (with those players he mentioned), it was the same story for the '04 Olympics and it's not as if the system was any better for the '06 World Cup until now. They just have more unguardable players. Those select teams with guys who played in World Cup qualifying defend better and look like a legit FIBA Team than anyone USAB can pick from the NBA over an off-season.

I still believe it was a lot of players that would of agreed to go that was not all stars or future stars that could of been on that team and helped them win all they needed was 2 shooters from the perimeter lary brown was calling great plays getting people open for outside jump shots guys was just bricking there jumpers I saw RJ miss so many open corner 3's I couldn't believe it.

A lot of those older players who said no had personal and career issues that year, legal problems, contracts, injuries, relationship with their Olympic teammates. They were putting all of that above the interests of the US national team. That's why the young squad was sent in, they were still pretty good, but just way too young.
@younglove3362

How do you know the US wasn't the problem. I remember hearing them speak about sending in role players and young players instead of our best players and being like "wtf are they thinking?" I was okay with the line up because it wasn't that bad. But I was shocked when other teams were busting us, especially when shooting those outrageous 3's before Steph was doing it 🤔.

I think it’s crazy that RJ has the same 3pt percentage as Larry Bird, when Larry Bird didn’t grow up with a 3pt line; it didn’t exist. His first organized basketball experience with the 3pt line was his rookie season in the NBA. And he still shot as well as someone who grew up with a 3pt line their entire life. MJ, Magic too…players that started their careers in the early 80’s
