Don't know if anyone mentioned it already, but I guess the reason why the Finns might like to drink something tar-flavored is that they use birch tar as a scent in the sauna - and with the intensity of those steamy scents you inhale in the sauna it's only one step away from having it as a cold drink anyway.
@yeoltelly9 жыл бұрын
I love the smell and taste of tar. I'm Finnish though. Fun fact: we used to be a major exporter of tar back in the days of wooden ships. And one of our main customers was England.

Pine Tar? You mean the same stuff you glue wooden ships together with? WTF
@pierauspitz11 жыл бұрын
Well... Glued together, not really. "Painted with" might be more accurate. In Finland, where it was massively produced, it still holds an important place in the people psyche... After all, it's a substance that has/had 1001 uses: from paint to mosquito-repellent, cure-all medicine and flavoring agent (from sauna scent to candies, boose and soda) etc etc... Actually, once diluted, it has quite a musky, smokey smell that is pretty enjoyable (but I guess it's an acquired taste). :)

Tar is a very finnish thing, in history it was the most important export we had, even more so than wood. Heh, one could say the British Empire was built with finnish tar. We have Tar flavoured sweets and drinks, and I find them quite lovely. It just seems weird to foreingers. Basicly tar is just slowly roasted wood (kinda, its bit more complicated than that)

I just realised I didn't actually know what tar was, so I looked it up- a dark, thick flammable liquid distilled from wood or coal, consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons, resins, alcohols, and other compounds. It is used in road-making and for coating and preserving timber. Why would anyone want to flavour things with this?

The rightmost two say "Dishwasher" and "Extractor Fan", so one presumes the relevant devices are hardwired through them rather than connected to 13A sockets (or possibly, like my standalone oven, they're remote switches for a concealed 13A). The left on is most likely for the cooker, and is different because it will be somewhat higher current, probably 30A or so, and definitely hardwired.

It has nothing to do with rocks at all. It's produced from pine woods and their roots. It's also a byproduct from distilling oil, but generally the tar used in foods is from wood. And yes, tar is used for building ships, roadworks and all sorts of stuff. No wonder it got really popular with vikings and people that lived around that area and time. :)

Hmmm... I wonder... Ashen, have you ever tried any Fernet, like Fernet Branca? It's sour and tastes like old herbal based medecine, but it's really good if you pour just a little bit (1/16 of the glass more or less) in a glass of Tonic Water. In Central Europe it is quite a liked drink, and personaly I love it.
