Several years ago, I installed 5 of these for 5 clients. All 5 failed. When they fail, it won't ring the original doorbell chime. (the reason it didn't was because the part that goes in the chime had 3 wires and was connected in series, after watching your video, I see 2 wires and it is now connected in parallel) 4 Clients after a few replacements said "Just hook my old doorbell button back up. One is still using ring, but it was replaced by ring 3 times. Glad to see Ring has made improvements. Nest makes a better IMO doorbell camera. Thank you Rick for the excellent presentation.

Bruce, thanks a lot for the thoughtful post. I've used both the Ring and the Nest (love their thermostats) and they both work equally well. Ring has done a great job of improving their products in the last year or two and the new device that connects to the actual doorbell is a good example of that. I've installed about a dozen of these for friends and they are all still working, fingers crossed. Stop back soon as I'll be adding more content on home automation and security camera gear as well as Wifi and devices like Alexa and Google Home. Rick

Scott, thanks for the post and as you saw in the previous reply Ring has a few different models and some of them use batteries and don't require wiring into the home. Between these models I like the one that uses standard batteries that I can swap out. This way I can still use rechargeable ones and always have a fresh set ready when I need to swap. Hi Rick, I really appreciate the video, as I was just considering one of these. My doorway is recessed like yours. I wondered about mounting it on the outside of the entryway so it would have a wider field of view so I could maybe see the vehicle a suspicious guy got out of. Do you think this would be beneficial, or is the image so wide-angle that the vehicle would be too small to be useful that far away? Thanks again. I really like your style.
@Dronevalley5 жыл бұрын
Tim, the unit comes with a few adjustment wedges that allow you to tweak the angle the camera is recording. I didn't install those as part of the clip but did add one afterward to give me a clearer view of the porch. Right now I get a great view of the street (about 75' away) as well as the path and porch in front of the house. I'm sure you could put it outside of your entryway but honestly the detail far away is hard to make out. I appreciate you posting and here's a link to the one I used in the clip on Amazon in case you decide to make the purchase (we get a little credit) - amzn.to/2KiAGFd

Drone Valley finer details may be hard to make out but as a retired cop I can tell you that even gross details like the color or shape of a vehicle can be immensely helpful (or even the absence of a vehicle) not to mention the number of people and their relative size, etc. I would always encourage folks to mount cameras wherever they could capture as much video as possible while not losing important close-up details like right at the front door.

@@troyhenry3267 LOL, sorry I totally misunderstood your question. Yes, there is a small monthly fee you pay to Ring to store your clips in the cloud for review. Ring is a big peace of sh*t. I backed them when they started and got the product. It was working fine except that the delay sometimes was over 10 seconds before receiving the notification on the phone. Problem was that the "ring" 1st needed to go to one of the Ring servers. After this it pushed the signal to the phone. They were blaming the slow internet connection of me, I'm on fiber (1Gb up/down). They als blamed the Wi-Fi connection between the Ring and the AP. The AP was next to the Ring. Anyway. I could live with the delay.. But then all of a sudden they changed the protocol making my not so old Ring useless. Ring offered me a 20% discount on a new Ring. I'm now using a Doorbird, and am so happy with it. Notifications are instant, and it evens works with my Voip phone! For me (and all my friends) no more Ring.
@Dronevalley5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and I'm sorry to hear about your issues. I've had good luck with the Ring doorbells over the years and I know they have gradually updated their systems. The addition of the module that fits inside the actual doorbell is a good example of that. I can't defend their earlier units but am happy that they are constantly improving the products. I will be testing other doorbells and security cameras on the channel so let me know if you have one you think is the best and I'll test it and post a clip. Thanks and I hope you'll sub the channel.
