Brilliant to see you improving the boat all the time. It's only when you study these things like waste tanks you realise that someone has gone... you know what? Mild steel is one third of the price of stainless. no-one will know. Your brewery or dairy based man knows all about it. I was at Boddingtons on the engineering side and we had stainless fabricators on site a lot. those fittings you used are definitely the dog's B***. Lovely to hear that Lister cranking up. makes me long to set off in our boat. Keep up the good work. Richard A.

When I was buying my boat, I decided to accept whatever toilet system was on a suitable boat and I hate to gloat but I am now pleased that my chosen boat has a simple porta-potti. It's great that you have some friends that can come down and help you out with the tank, my hat's off to them. I was really disappointed how much debris was in this part of the river. Though I probably shouldn't be, the Santa Ana River near where I live has gotten more polluted with all the homeless camped along it. I think it's great when you catch something that needs attention, maybe these videos will help draw more attention to the river system and bring about some positive changes.
@agladman1946 жыл бұрын
That was very interesting Robbie, as we too have a pumpout tank that for some reason doesn't fully empty. We've been thinking we have a layer of erm cake(???) at the bottom, but now maybe we need to check that pipe you mentioned and see if it has a hole in it. Thankfully our tank is plastic so said pipe shouldn't be welded in place. Your engine sounds better too.

@MrBblhed6 жыл бұрын
That looks to be quite the quality tank repair. I deal with that type of material in what I do for work and if you got that done for less than $1,000 USD you did alright. If you can every now and then pour some water down your vent to keep it clean and keep anything from spending too long stuck to it at the tank end. Your engine still sounds as loud as ever, but it does sound a lot more solid, you did have a bit of a tick in it before, it probably wouldn't have been a problem for years but better to have it sorted. It is an older engine and they do tick and click but if you can remove or reduce one tick you may extend the life of several parts. Fair winds to you.
@RobbieCumming6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ted, yeah those guys were brilliant and didn’t even charge, but I did give them what I could afford. The engine repairs however cost close to $850/£660 so although I’m now completely broke I think it is worth it. And yes definitely will clean the vent as you said, thank you! 8^)

Whomever built the original tank was not thinking about a big no-no of using dissimilar metals in the presence of moisture which will create galvanic action aka corrosion. Stainless and black iron pipe would have started to corrode as soon as the tank was used. Good job by the folks who helped you. Hi Robbie - pleased you're doing ok. Damn wish I'd known you were still at Newark. Could have popped in last November. Anyway Nether lock. Coming back from Notts in 2005?? on Wud I decided to wait in Newark for a while. Lock keeper had gone home, chatting to people just upstream of the lock. So, imagine the scene. I had Barney who had to get off first. So got Barney off Wud. Opened lower gates. Climbed down onto Wud and took her into lock. Tying high enough on the ladder to allow for high water. Climbed vertical ladder. Closed lower gates, opened top paddles, keeping an eye on Wud. Opened top gates, climbed vertical ladder to get back on Wud. Took her out mooring topside. Closed top gates, got Barney back onboard and set off......PHEW.

@@RobbieCumming I've not hear that before, but quite possible. Depends when Cromwell was built. I actually enjoyed the Trent from Newark to Notts. Did the trip a few times. A bit late to the party I guess, but I'm thinking you could have gotten away with using SS exhaust-parts as pipes(3x pre-bent pieces and a straight one welded to the suction one), assuming they would fit the plastic pipes with jubilee clamps. Guess this would have brought the parts budget in the £100-150 range.

Unfortunately, not a big surprise that the fitting rusted off. When you join (weld) dissimilar metals you basically build a battery and create a galvanic corrosion cell. Even with minimal use, it would have corroded off. You've done the best thing with using SS fittings.
