ELO always reminds me of being on vacation. My Mom had ELO Greatest Hits on cassette. We were up in Michigan on vacation and brought a boom box to the beach for the day. Mom popped in ELO while she relaxed on the lounge chair and the rest of us played in the sand. The first side of the tape finished and when she went to flip it, the eject button was jammed. We had to listen to side 1 over and over the whole day at the beach.

Everything by ELO is gold. The sound so melodic and moving. As a kid I noticed it wasn't always 4x4 standard pop songs, but strange sounds that delighted the ears. My favourite? Mission (A World Record).

"Turn To Stone", was described by Donald A. Guarisco as "a good example of Electric Light Orchestra's skill for mixing string-laden pop hooks with driving rock and roll", praising the "array of swirling string lines that dart in and out of the mix and some dazzling falsetto harmonies that interact with Lynne's lead vocal in call and response style". This song garnered Jeff Lynne a BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) Million-Air certificate for having one million airplays. They took their name because they combined electric rock instruments with orchestral instruments. "Light Orchestras" were small orchestras popular in England in the '60s.

When I was in what must have been the equivalent the 8th or 9th grade? in about 1978 one of our music teachers put Turn to Stone on followed by reggae band Steel Pulse to demonstrate the difference between a more straight rock style of drumming and the variation found in the latter's percussive style. Turn to Stone was a UK hit at the late end of 1977 and a favourite ELO song of one of my closest friends at school. Great song.

Amber hit the nail on the head. The key word is Orchestra. ELO uses everything in the orchestra to make music. Not many groups can do it this good. Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Queen, Beatles. I saw the tour for this album and it was incredible. Their stage was a giant flying saucer motif where the opening band had to have a separate stage to perform on and then be taken down so E.L.O. could do their show. I'm gonna say it again guys. I have been requesting and waiting on two reactions from you two for several months now. If you guys read the comments then you know what they are. But to recap-by them is "El Dorado (overture) and Can't Get It Out Of My Head". "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" was a hit on it's own but these two go right into each other and it's best to do them that way. It's only a couple of minutes longer and the overture is great, you'll love it.. A more rockin' song by them is "Poker". A more straight ahead rock tune. Of course the other song I want is "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen. I'm gonna keep saying them until you do them.
