Since I first heard Dolly sing this song on the radio, I've always felt that the minor key made her song sound like Irish "cottage singing". It made me think of a sad woman sitting by the window at sunset. I love the guitar accompanying Dolly! In 1974 one of my neighbors asked me to help run a spotlight at a country western show. I was a rocking and rolling teenager and country western shows weren't high on my list of things to do on a Friday night but I needed the $20 they offered me. It was the Porter Wagoner Show and the stage crew met briefly with Porter before the show started. Porter was a task master and he pretty much rubbed me the wrong way but there was this beautiful, very friendly blond singer that I immediately fell in love with. Needless to say her name was Dolly. That night, to Porters dismay I kept my spotlight on Dolly. He had to crowd her on stage to stay in the spotlight. I was transfixed and mesmerized watching and listening to Dolly perform. What an Angel. After the show I managed to avoid bumping into Porter backstage but Dolly took the time to thank each of the stage crew. When she shook my hand I almost melted. What a Goddess. Beautiful, talented, kind and friendly. In the next couple of years Dolly Parton became a headliner and she lost Porter and the rest is history.

Wow. This song never ceases to raise goosebumps. The medieval version by Hildegard von Blingin is also a beautiful tribute. Hope Dolly's heard it.

I have to be honest, I had never listened to any of Dolly Parton's songs and if I ever did I do not remember any. But I went to Gatlinburg and asked my car to "play some Dolly Parton's songs". This one was the first one that came out and me and my GF were laughing and couldn't believe how pathetic the lyrics were. But because of that now it got stuck into my head and now I like it. (first and only country song that I like)

Her lyrics are always genius -- not just in this song, but everything from "Smoky Mountain Memories" to "9 to 5" and so many more. She is a superbly talented songwriter -- among her many, many other gifts. Just a national treasure, as everyone else seems to say! Can't disagree.

Some pieces transcend their genre; I think this and Tammy's SBYM are the ones for this genre (which I'm not a fan of on the whole). I'm not keen on opera either, but there are some pieces that are great (even sung ones).

Wow. Dolly is and has always been amazing. The reason I enjoy country music so much is because it tells a story graphically, gets the feelings behind it across so clearly yet so simply. It’s like she’s having a conversation. Wow.

I heard her say that her and her mom were in town and dolly saw a girl and thought she was so pretty and her mom said that girl is trashy. So dolly wanted to be trashy too. And I agree that I don't want a world without her. She's so sweet and nice. I've never met her but I'm sure she wouldn't disappoint. That's America's sweetheart
