A very Senior Exec at a multi billion well know B2B company I worked for, referred to the Marketing Dept as the "colouring in department". This is the fundamental problem with B2B. The crusty leadership are absolutely clueless about the true value of Marketing and subsequently hire the wrong ppl, with the wrong skillsets, for the wrong reasons.

I also wonder whether there is something to be learned from a company's culture and how it affects cognitive bias of the purchasing team. For instance, does Spacex behave differently in the buying process than General Electric does?

In these mega infrastructure-esque Space-X Vs GE purchases, they are subject to heavily regulated procurement process and RfP's. Procurement teams have very little scope to stray outside of the practical. Where the emotional battle is fought is in the lobbying. I.e. the regulators and law makers responsible for creating the rules. The battle is fought and won before any purchasing decision is made by the plebs.
