Matahari means an Eye of a Day. I'm a Korean and speaks Indonesian language. I've heard that spy was called MATAHARI because the Netherlands conquered Indonesia during WWI. She had married to a Dutch solider who had duty in Indonesia and lived there. After that she moved to the Netherlands after her son died and she showed her Javanese dance for a living. That's why she was called that name, I suppose.

German is the biggest language influence on Swedish apart from Old Norse. Not only because of the germanic root but also because of trade history. Also, Frozen has a Swedish name, it's "Frost".
@xenotypos
@xenotypos Жыл бұрын
Rgearding Frozen, it's funny because in french AND german they put the name of the old fairy tale from Andersen (probably thinking it will sell more as people know what it is). Disney didn't because Frozen is only loosely based on the Snow Queen. It would be kind of dishonest to brand it with the name of the original tale if 90% of the story is completely made up. Which makes it different from Cendrillon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Sleeping Beauty etc... Worth mentioning that Disney did the same with Tangled: loosely inspired by Raiponce, but a story mostly invented. Also changed back the name of the movie to the original fairy tale in France and Germany (Raiponce).
@davidkglevi
@davidkglevi Жыл бұрын
@@xenotypos Yes, "The Snow Queen" probably wasn't as catchy as "Frozen". Also, as you point out, in the same style as "Tangled". It would be funny though to rename all the old classics. Instead of Snow white, it would be something like "Boxed", Cinderella would be "Shoed" and Sleeping Beauty would just be "Pricked".

@@Nao-pj7mc That isn't correct though. Swedish comes from Old Norse, which is quite different from German. Old Norse and it's even older forms are again even more removed from German, even though they all are part the germanic languages. In Bahasa Indonesia language, Matahari means Sun, but it also come from two words, "Mata" means Eye, and "Hari" means Day. So Matahari can translated as "The Eye of The Day". Also in Bahasa Indonesia, "Spy" if translated to Indonesian is "Mata-Mata" (Eyes-Eyes). It means "The Eyes of Eyes", Someone who use his/her eyes as eyes for their master. (EN : Spy Agent >>> ID : Agen Mata-Mata) I think Mata Hari is her secret code as spy agent. Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands at that time so that's why many Dutch already familiar with Indonesian language. (FYI : She also was live in East Java, a province in Indonesia for several years). Matahari in Bahasa Indonesia can has many meanings because it's one of the most common word in Indonesian poet and literatures. So its suitable for secret agent code.

Matahari (Indonesian)=sun (English). Mata Hari (literally, “Eye of the Day) is a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy for Germany during WW I. Her real name is Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod (née Zelle). She was born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. She married a Dutch Colonial Army Captain Rudolf MacLeod. She moved with her husband to Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in 1897. In Indonesia, they lived in Java Island and Sumatra Island. When she lived in Indonesia she studied Indonesian culture and joined a local dance company during that time. Mata Hari is Margaretha’s pen name when she was in correspondence with her relatives in the Netherlands. Rudolf and Margaretha separated in 1902 because Rudolf was an alcoholic and physically abused Margaretha. In 1903, Margaretha moved to Paris. She struggled to earn a living in Paris. She performed as a circus horse rider using the name Lady MacLeod and also posed as an artist's model. By 1904, Mata Hari began to rise to prominence as an exotic dancer. Tall, extremely attractive, superficial, and willing to appear virtually nude in public, Mata Hari was an instant success in Paris and other large cities. She was shot by the French on charges of spying for Germany during World War I. She caused the deaths of thousands of Allied soldiers.

I just read about Mata Hari the spy that they were mentioned. Mata Hari is a Dutch woman spy during WW1 for Germany set by the Second Bureau of the French War Ministry in December, 1916. it is not an accident to be corelated to Indonesian Language because she herself married to Dutch Colonial Army Captain Rudolf MacLeod which they were part of Dutch East Indies. At that time Mata Hari aka Margaretha Geertruida Zelle found her name during her time in Indonesia studying Indonesian Culture. as what people explained in comment section, Mata Hari -> Matahari (the eye of the day) means sun.

I think Mata Hari is her secret code as spy agent. Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands at that time so that's why many Dutch already familiar with Indonesian language. Matahari in Bahasa Indonesia can has many meanings. It can means Sun, but it also come from two words, "Mata" means Eye, and "Hari" means Day. So Matahari can translated as "The Eye of The Day" in Indonesian. The word "Spy" itself if translated to Indonesian is "Mata-Mata". It means "Eyes-Eyes" or "The Eyes of Eyes", someone who use his/her eyes as eyes for their master. EN : Spy Agent >>> ID : Agen Mata-Mata.

It is interesting that the word Matahari sounds like Mata Hari. I wonder if there was intention when she chose that name. She was a Dutch exotic dancer that posed as a Javanese princess as part of her act. She was accused and convicted of spying during the first world war but it’s widely speculated that she was used as a scapegoat for the failures of the French during the early parts of the first world war and that she never actually passed on any intelligence that "couldn’t be found in a Spanish newspaper at the time".

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. (Mata hari) was a famous dancer who became a courtesan, and with the outbreak of World War I her catalog of lovers began to include high-ranking military officers of various nationalities. In February 1917, French authorities arrested her for espionage. She was accused of revealing details of the Allies’ new weapon (the tank) resulting in the deaths of thousands of soldiers. She was convicted and sentenced to death, and on October 15 she refused a blindfold and was shot to death by a firing squad at Vincennes.
