At busy airports like JFK, things can get out of control fast when pilots don't follow directions.

Tower makes mistakes too!! I know first hand--I have been given bad taxiway instructions more than once here at my airport job: But the fact is ATC and Ground controllers are very professional and have all my respect and admiration.

It was humorous enough when ATC said that, but now that you mentioned if that was Peter Griffin took it to a higher level!! I can just imagine Peter standing in the control tower saying that! LOL

@plane63 Agreed - but nowhere in my comment did I say the ATC controller was responsible for safety. Nor, as a PIC, would I ever give that up.

It is hard to give taxi info to all planes and it takes time so they let planes follow each other so it is easier but when something like this happens the system falls apart

I am a retired airline pilot. I've flown into and out of JFK more times than I can remember. I've been in the control tower many times, and had controllers in my jump seat many times. The toughest job there, is ground control. There are so many taxiways, they go through the alphabet twice. Pull up the diagram of the airport, and you will understand.

I now see the issues ATC has ESPECIALLY with inbound internation (non-english speakers). I alway though commerical pilots get "airport ground" training, so they know how to navigate the airports that they might serve (as regular or as a replacement).

@sundevilfan4 True, but only a small handful of major airports have the ASDE-X system. Normal radar is not effective below a certain altitude. Florida has 3 airports with ASDE-X: Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. There are only 29 in the entire country. The rest of the major airports rely on pilots and controllers being precise, clear and accurate. All things considered with the shear volume of traffic and ground maneuvers in the US each day... the verbal system works exceptionally well.

@40390576 We do have one, Its not meant to be "ground radar" but its meant to avoid collisions on runways with vehicles/planes that shouldn't be on the runway. do they have one? probably not. so he's doing a hell of a good job.

I think that If I would have to become an ATC, It would probably be fun at times, but I'm sure that my head would explode If this ever happens, which I'm sure that It does on a regular basis, if people aren't doing what they are suppose to do.

I thought the controller did a nice job of keeping his cool (all things considered). This is stressful for everyone. I did get invited (as a private pilot) to the tower at a less busy airport. I sat quietly and watched... Things are a lot different from up there. I thought you'd be able to see things better... in fact it's just the opposite. I can see things from the left seat that these poor controllers can't. I have no idea how they do it at night!!

I love how people with no flying experience (I'm a pilot) leave unfair opinions when in fact most of you (if any) if NEVER been in this position before. You leave comments starting with 'I think' when you shouldn't be thinking ANYTHING since you;ve never been able to fairly understand what is experienced between pilots and controllers.
