One thing about Kennedy Steve (Steve Abraham). Notice how he saves the joking for domestic crews. He slows down for foreign carriers and enunciates very clearly for them. But not tug drivers. :)

1:39 I think European airports give direction for the tail of the airplanes to face a certain direction during push back (the direction the tug is pushing), but american airports gives direction for the nose to face a certain direction. so maybe there was a confusion by the captain or tug crew due to habit. interesting to see too that Kennedy Steve always give direction such as southwest etc.. while other controllers may say face the sea, which might cause irritation when pilot had to call again (southwest? south?)..

I have seen Steve call for the plane to be facing a geographical object, like the city.

Reizaal Aziz that’s not true, when I get cleared to push a certain way it’s always “cleared to push tail _____” not nose facing a certain way
@2011blueman
@2011blueman 5 жыл бұрын
@@ijalgila Yes that is exactly correct, Europeans general use direction of tail while North America uses direction of the nose. The main problem is that a lot of the foreign pilots are not proficient enough in English to catch that distinction.

I bet Kennedy Steve could make a nice post-retirement living by speaking at pilots' conventions and training seminars! What I like about him is that he has time for those rare brilliant comments, but it's not "all about him"; his professional skills are always to the fore. He can put genuine warmth and a light personal touch into the highly regulated communication style which ATC demands. It must be nice to be an arriving pilot hearing his voice on the other end. Love your videos!

If she had a reasonable concept of Spanish grammar (or if she’d spoken to Spanish-speaking pilots before), she’d know this was likely the pilot’s way of trying to say, “that is correct ma’am/miss.”

@@Elisevetter I think the previous commenter's point was that the pilot didn't know or forgot that "lady" isn't the equivalent to "sir". Maybe I need to relisten later with fresh ears, but it really didn't sound like anything else to me.
@orphmills
@orphmills 4 жыл бұрын
It's an English as a second language thing. I'm sure he was looking for the equivalent of "señora", and couldn´t land on a proper word and so went with "lady" pulling from the commonly used phrase "ladies and gentlemen", or the use of "lady" as a more elegant choice. I doubt there were any bad intentions there. BTW "ma'am" can be so hard to learn, both the word and its usage.

Man, the only one who is doing their job AND having fun doing it is Kennedy Steve (isn't he named like that?). Not trying to be racy, but most of those harsher transmissions are against non-american airlines/pilots. Not only in this video, but many others. They need to realize that air traffic control is very different internationaly. Like the "ramp" thing, I only see that in the US. For example here in Germany the ground controller is controlling you from runway to your explicit gate and vice versa. The ground controller here in Germany will give every plane the "facing" (where to turn the nose to) with their pushback clearance (if there are more than one ways to push). Just an example.
