This fight wasn't close from the first minute. James was too heavy to keep fighting at 168 and Roy was probably the best 168 lb'er ever. This fight was his coming out party as the best fighter in the world for a decade. He was just incredible and if he'd have retired after the Ruiz fight or even the first Tarver fight, I think he'd be seen by many as the GOAT.

This is the fight in which I thought I might be watching the greatest fighter of all time in terms of pure ability in Jones. His speed and athleticism was without equal with great power to boot. With that being said Toney was out of shape for this fight which is too bad because I believe he may have had the superior all around skills and is a defensive all time great. Roy in his prime at 168lbs beats anyone and forget about when he was at middleweight. Nobody in the history of boxing beats him at that weight including Sugar Ray Robinson who's best weight was probably 147lbs. That's not a knock in SRR who's the greatest P4P fighter ever but I'd take Jones at middleweight in a fight between the two.

Ray Robinson would have tested Roy's chin and Hagler would have as well. We all know what happened to RJJ once he started to slow down and his opponents were able to catch up to him. A weak chin is a weak chin and a weak chin never wins against a poweful punch. SRR had the hand speed, the timing and accuracy to connect with Roy and he also had the power to put him away. Hagler was an animal in his prime and had a relentless attack. His ability to switch stances in the middle of a combination would have thrown Roy off and his jab would have a key to the fight. A prime Marvin Hagler could brawl, box from the outside, was a great infighter and had the footwork to cut off the ring on Jones. He would have given Roy a lot of trouble and I'm not talking about the version of him that had almost 70 fights and faced Sugar Ray Leonard. A young Hagler was a whole different story. I agree that RJJ was one of the most physically gifted athletes of all time and that goes a long way in boxing but the other two were also physically gifted in their own right but had more overall skills to bring to the table. I can't say who would have won out of the 3 in any given match up between them but I do think it's ludicrous to put Roy above the other two so clear cut.

Toney fought at that weight or lower for over six years prior to his fight with Roy, often struggling to make weight. Why is weight suddenly considered a factor? Just because he had his ass handed to him? Besides, it's not like he gassed in the later rounds he was dominated from the opening bell.

Its an excuse him and his fans love to use. The reason y he struggled to make the weight wasn't because he suddenly grew out of the division, Roy was naturally bigger than James. It was that James didn't have the discipline in between fights. His manager Jackie Kallen would have him fight every 6-8 weeks or so. Because she knew if hed have any sort of layoff that he'd either gain a bunch of weight, or he'd get caught up in thr streets. He actually had a 4 month layoff leading into the Jones fight. Which nowadays isn't a layoff at all, but for James it was. He went into camp at over 220 lbs

James was drained for this fight, if both toney and Roy came in both 100% Peak I doubt Roy could of done what he did to James the way he did it.
