Hitchcocks do a rubber grommet ( pt number 144752) for the alternator wire for the primary case👍🏻nice job on the bike,I’d recommend a decompression valve for easier starting 👍🏻
@Cyclingwithgasoline11 ай бұрын
That rubber grommet was way too small to get the alternator wire through (I tried it). And it’s been starting within 2 or 3 kicks without the decompressor (and I never used it when I had it). Thanks for watching

Outstanding job my friend! One of the most thorough and tasteful rebuilds I have ever seen 😎👌👋 As I mentioned before my bike is almost identical as it's a 2005 Bullet but in black. I have learned a lot and have thoroughly enjoyed this series of videos! I agree Tasmania is such a beautiful place, I have recently moved here from Sydney and I like it here so much more than the mainland 😀 All the best and I look forward to seeing how you go with the timing and the new ignition, all there best!

Kick back like those can wear the manual starter system very early as 350s can be kick started without manually decompressing it but 500? I suggest you to switch back to manual decompressor, it’ll be gentle on the starter system, it’s newly built that’s why those kick backs aren’t bothering you but once you get start to use it often, it’ll be a big hassle to kick it over! A well tuned 500 can be started by hand! Ofcourse after manual decompressing it.
@Cyclingwithgasoline11 ай бұрын
It’s starting within 2 or 3 kicks when cold now. Rarely kicks back as I’ve really dialed in the timing. I never used the decompressor before (when it ran a year ago) as I don’t have points to set it up with the ammeter. I always set it up by lightly standing/pushing on it until it’s ready for a long kick. It’s never forced or jammed.

It would make it easier to kick if you bring it up to compression, then use the decompressor to ease it over TDC. Let the kick start return to the top then swing. If the timing is close it wont kick back. Nice bike. Like it. Peace and love from the UK.
@Cyclingwithgasoline11 ай бұрын
I deleted the decompressor during the build 😂. I don’t have points, so I can’t set it with the ammeter and have always just done this by feel. And yes, I’m stubborn. I got the timing dialed in since the video. Kick back is now rare and it starts within 2 or 3 kicks when cold. Thanks for watching!
@JeremyHollier11 ай бұрын
Oh ok. Didn't realise you had removed it.
@PAGallagher11 ай бұрын
Bravo! Well done, it's sounding nice and looks like it's got a nice healthy dollop of compression, too. Will look forward to your first ride out video. With it's steady tick over and tendency to kick back a little, on starting, I'd say the timing is pretty much there but I'll be interested to know what you find. All the best, Phil (UK)
@Cyclingwithgasoline11 ай бұрын
Thanks! The timing is now spot on. Starts within 3 kicks at the most when cold. Carb is also dialed in. Every one of these that I’ve seen kicks back to some degree, so I’m not worried about. Mine has settled and only does it occasionally. For me, it just reinforces that I have spark 😂

Great work. How did you fix the timing with the Eurekha ignition? You are right, the play in it does not guarantee the timing will be set forever. Would nice if you can share some details on that. Waiting for the Boyer ignition video too 😊
@Cyclingwithgasoline11 ай бұрын
Thanks! I set the eureka at top dead center by aligning the magnet and sensor from the back of the distributor (top gear) while the piston was at top dead center (compression stroke, but I’m fairly sure this has a wasted spark - both strokes). I used a top dead center tool in the spark plug opening that’s a gauge that basically doubles as a timing wheel (I borrowed it), so based on that, I turned the plate clockwise about 3/4 of the way and it was timed fairly well, but I could tell it wasn’t zeroed in. Turning it counterclockwise to about halfway between TDC and the end had it dialed in. I’ll need to ride it a few times to be sure and might tweak it a bit if needed, but it seems perfect as of now. Clean idle, no backfiring or pinging, good acceleration, easy starting, etc. I don’t feel the need to strobe it at this point. I’ll make a dedicated video on the Boyer install for sure.
@shashikiranjeppu815811 ай бұрын
@@Cyclingwithgasoline Thank you so much. That helps. Just curious, should the magnet and the sensor be facing each other just before reaching TDC?

super job!! can't wait to hear how the ride goes. that kick back is a bit unusual. that model didn't have decompressor ? funny i had that kind of kick back when my classic chrome was running EFI. once i converted to carb is kicks over with no fuss. Anyway its been a great series.
@Cyclingwithgasoline11 ай бұрын
Thanks! I actually deleted the decompressor during the build. I don’t have points, so I can’t set it up with the ammeter. I never used it when it was running a year ago and honestly don’t miss it. It’s kicking over within 2 or 3 kicks now, so all is well
@silverback392611 ай бұрын
My knee couldn't handle that kick back. Ah youth.... I was messing around with trying to adapt new rotory switches to my classic. Blew a fuse so i replaced the fuse. Set everything back to OEM. Charged battery and now no spark. Tomorrow I will replace spark plug as the one that's there is old. Check for spark. I can hear relay working. So if new plug doesn't resolve it. I guess I will have to start to trouble shoot. Start with coil etc. Ugh!!!! Should have left well enough alone.
