As someone who spent 10 years active duty Army and has spent countless hours in various types of ceremonies, I can tell you this happens all the time. Sometimes from dehydration, overheating, illness or locking your legs out. I've seen it many times. Standing at attention for a long period of time is very difficult. I remember when I was stationed in Hawaii, we had a change of command ceremony that lasted over 3 hours. We had to stand information that while time in a field with no shade and it was 89 degrees out that day. Absolutely awful.

It’s worth mentioning, for the avoidance of any misconceptions here, that the man who fell is not a soldier. He is a member of the Scottish ceremonial guard, the Royal Company of Archers. They are all volunteers and mostly of retirement age, spending the rest of their duties representing their organisation in competition longbow. None of them were forced into it, they volunteered for this duty. Unfortunately for this poor chap, he was probably under the weather and, combined with his age, found it really difficult to stay there for his 20 minute slot. I do hope he’s alright. Edit: For what it's worth, there was an interview of one of the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) who was there, an RAF veteran named Tam Reilly, and he said the archer recovered shortly afterwards.

Thank you for commenting with actual facts and logic. Being an older man, this fall is going to be a lot harder on him than it would be on a young person. And to the silly people who said he didn't hit his head, if you slow down the playback speed, you can see that although he managed to get his hands in front of him, which surely helped slow him down, he still smacks his forehead so hard and fast that it bounces off of the stone floor. He'll be lucky if he doesn't have a concussion.

Besides the standing attention. It's everything surrounding the ceremony. The honor, the duty, the emotions. There's no comparison I mean I'm not there and I feel sadness of the pasting of the Queen. I remember I was a little boy when my parents took me to see the Queen visiting Hong Kong in 1975. Everyone was so excited to catch a glimpse of her. My dad bought a commemorative plate of their visit. I think we still have it.

The on-screen text here is terribly misleading. The guards stand at their posts for only 20 minutes at a time. Then they are relieved by other members of their unit. Their duty shift may be 6 hours, but they stand still only in 20 minute increments. Still, 20 minutes is plenty long enough to lock your knees and pass out. I hope the soldier is OK. Looks like he was just about to be relieved.

@@mattheoswho1010 yeah you do, but you have to bend slightly so it’s not noticeable. I was in ROTC too and that what they told us to do. Basically when you lock your knees your basically turning off the muscles around your knees and reducing blood flow there. hence why you fall out

I was in the Canada version of ROTC. Even though we didn't drill for that long and a couple kids would faint once in a while, our legs would get tired/stiff for either standing too long or continously doing drill (band drill, regular drill or not) and the officer would tell us to bend our legs once in a while.

That was a very serious fall. My best wishes to the gentleman who collapsed. I have suffered a brain injury from a similar fall and it changed my life. I hope and pray that anyone who ever hits their head, whether you lose conscience or not, you request that your doctor refer you to a speech or occupational therapist. A doctor does NOT know or understand TBI's. He might run some tests, but they only determine if there's something abnormal that shows up. Most TBI's come back "normal" because that kind of damage doesn't show up on those tests. That's why you have to go to a speech/occupational therapists. They will test to see how your memory and cognitive functioning is doing. I am in 2 support groups for people with TBI's and we have all been to doctor's who said the tests came back "normal" and yet we had serious memory issues and we weren't able to do the things we had before. Everyone I know lost jobs and friends because people they might look and talk normal, but they couldn't function in their daily life anymore. No one, not even ourselves, could understand what was wrong. I hope this helps someone. Best wishes.

I did this exact thing when I was in the military during a "change of command" ceremony. I was only standing for 15 -20 minutes and had my knee's locked which they always tell us not to do. I didn't really notice until all of sudden I could see my vision closing in from the side and turning into tunnel vision. I fell strait flat just like he did, hitting my front two teeth and shattering them completely. Several people came over to help me and I was taken to the hospital for a checkup and then booked for a dentist to fix the cosmetic damage. The US military is good about covering the cost of these things and paid for my implants which look better than my original teeth. The most shocking part was looking in the mirror at my teeth after the fall and seeing them gone.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before a soldier or guard collapsed. I have seen this before at Remembrance Sunday, as a child, when one squaddie collapsed at the cenotaph in my city and also saw it in London once. These men do an amazing and difficult job in very trying circumstances. I admire him and all the others at this awful time and hope he is OK.

I honestly can't imagine how it feels like being a royal guard, I hope the guard is doing ok. 🙏 May the queen rest in peace. 🕊🕊🕊 Pls also keep in mind the fact that 'Slavery, Colonialism & Colonization' are all evil things done by evildoers. Around fifty 50 nations fell under British Colonialism; while around twenty five 25 nations under French Colonialism. - In the Colonial era all Anglo Western Colonizers did in their Colonies worldwide was build infrastructure, such as roads and ports so that they could ship abundant natural mineral resources, raw materials back to Europe to make fine goods, since there hardly has any mineral resources in Europe. That is what Colonialism is all about; "Pillage and Plunder" at will. - For instance, it is agreed upon the fact that Africa in general has progressed a lot more in the past 20-30 years than 200 years of Western Colonialism there. Moreover, World organization such as United Nations was helped founded, with cleverly drawn charters, by the West; only after they have had enough of practicing centuries-long global Slavery, Colonization and Colonialism; in such a way so as to; - keep their accumulated wealth to themselves, - their accumulated crimes not to get prosecuted by their former victims. 😔

Slavery, Colonialism & Colonization are all evil things done by evildoers 😔 Evildoers are deflecting the crimes by saying., "I saw my neighbor kidnapping one kid and tied him down in his basement, SO I STARTED TO DO THE SAME ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE WORLDWIDE FOR CENTURIES." That is not a valid excuse in ANY court of law... You're still a criminal, and you must and will repay your crimes. "Anglo caused most of the world's problems." - David Cameron, former British Prime Minister “British society has never been cleansed of the filth of imperialism.” - Salman Rushdie The fact that they need to repent & repay their sins & crimes. After all, it's "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" thing. Like I said, repay and repent for your long overdue crimes and sins. Remember the saying, "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do".

I was told countless times in the Navy not to lock your knees while standing at attention because locking the knees will cause decreased bloodflow to the brain & cause one to pass out, usually falling face front. I have personally seen a sailor fall on her face just like this guard did after standing at attention for about an hour while we waited for a hands call from the base's Captain. What's crazy is she collapsed in front of the Captain right as we was about to be dismissed.
