As an American, I have a great deal of respect for King George and Queen Elizabeth. Class acts. The King was a fine example of a man who didn't want to lead but rose to the occasion and became the leader to fit the time. A leader the people needed. They also raised a fine queen in Queen Elizabeth II who spent nearly her entire life in service. A life not of her own. I suspect he was a better King that his foolish and Selfish brother would have been.

One thing that was picked up on ,he didnt like anyone finishing a sentence for him . Although as a youngster I respected that, its only in the last few years I think I began to understand why. ?Principaled? Wallis Simpson? She had an extra marital affair with Edward, Prince of Wales and accepted expensive jewels and other gifts from a man not her husband. I don't call that "principaled". Wow, this documentary is very slanted in sympathy with Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor) indeed. Although Princess Margaret was definitely a favorite of her father, it was his wife Queen Elizabeth who was able to calm George when he was experiencing his rages and anxieties. Margaret. Margaret was too selfish to play that type of role with her Father. Margaret was also too young initially to be at her Father's side and play that type of role with him. Not the same as his wife Queen Elizabeth, later known as the Queen Mother. It seems like this documentary is trying to rewrite history. It wasn't "luck" that caused King George to overcome his shyness and stammer and gain the love of his people. It was sheer hard work and determination and the commitment and support of his wife and family that resulted in his success. How insulting to say that George had "luck" as a primary factor of his success.

It's actually been said by many sources that the opposite was true. As much as she liked Bertie, Elizabeth didn't want to marry into the royal family at all because she felt her lifestyle would be limited by it. She had an interest in another man who her parents and Albert worked behind the scenes to get rid of. She eventually gave in because people drove home the point (which should have been true) that she wouldn't become queen and there would be far less scrutiny on her household. Her parents were definitely interested in her marrying into the royal family, and her mother may have wanted her to marry the Prince of Wales, but they were willing to take what they could get.

This was very interesting, though occasionally biased and inaccurate. For example, the Royal Family were subjected to rations and cuts just like everyone else, and their usual spending on food, clothes, fuel and entertaining was drastically altered. The British public really took the Royal Family to their hearts during the war, especially after they were bombed at Buckingham Palace.

David was like any other self-indulgent brat, relishing his privileges and chafing at responsibility. Wallis was not courageous but merely irreverent. She played fast and loose until it finally caught up with her. Who puzzles me is Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and her motto about duty. It makes perfect sense that she would be appalled at the Wallis and David affair. And that no less because it would compel her reluctant husband to the throne which then contributed to his premature demise. It seems a contradiction that she later facilitated the adultery between Camilla and Charles. Where was her sense of duty in that?
