Man that is a ROOOUGH review. To each their own though. I’m about 30% through it and I love this game. Battle chasers was pretty unpolished, but seeing as most turn based RPG’s suck now-a-days, Airship Syndicate and their games are a breath of fresh air

How's the difficulty and enemies health? I find that usually, these kind of games, the enemies have an obnoxious amount of health which take forever.

@@Zuhri69 Difficulty is pretty easy compared to Battle Chasers so far. With all of the Different debuffs in the game and enchantments, enemies' health melt away

As a newcomer to the series, I was hoping this would be better. I guess I'll wait for a sale and hope some of the technical issues at least get fixed until then. Thanks for the helpful review!

Ruined King has improved a lot from Battle Chasers. Background art, field exploration, user convenience(battle speed up, exp could be earned for the bench members too), new battle system and loading got faster than BC(Still a bit slow in console version). Still lots of things are similar or same with BC but you can't say it's just a LoL skin version of Battle Chasers.

I loved battle chasers, but was disappointed that you were forced to run the tank character , most especially on the hardest difficulty, seems like there really was no choice. Hope this game has better options strategywise.

Well Bilgewater is literally a city of sailors, marines and fishmen. Having the mechanic there might be unnecessary but it doesnt stand stand out as a sore thumb either. That's like saying turrn based stands out because the original game is not turn based.

Totally disagree with this review. I don't even play LOL and still thought this was one of the best games i've played in years. Excellent voice acting. Excellent graphics. Excellent story and feeling. Barely any technical issues. I enjoyed walking with no fast travel, I mean the map is very interesting and not THAT big. etc etc. This is a GREAT game and that's coming from me who is SO picky

I’m playing right now and while I’m not sure whether it’s considered indie or AA but seems like one of the better titles in my collection.. It reminds me a lot of the Octopath Traveler series

The first thing I thought when I saw this is that it looks just like battlechasers. Makes sense it’s a reskin. I’d still give it a go on a steep sale, I loved battlechasers.

@@Baykko maybe I wasn’t clear in my prior comment, but my love of battlechasers is the only thing that interests me about this. I don’t actually want a reskin of a game I already own very much. Especially since that reskin is league of legends, which I’m not really into. Reskins are usually regarded as kind of lazy, which was the subtext of my comment, plus the game was reviewed poorly in this video, leading me to believe it wasn’t even a carefully done reskin. Besides, doing devs dirty would be pirating (something I do not do, tbc); there’s nothing dirty about waiting for a sale on a game you don’t want very much. Especially if it’s a buggy reskin of a game you already own. If this was a high quality game that actually excited me, (BoTW, Hollow Knight, Astral Chain, Metroid Dread, etc), I’d have no qualms paying the initial asking price. It’s just a matter of lack of personal interest in the title, and what I feel it’s worth. In fact, I bought all of the recent 2k ports for full price when they came out (bioshock, borderlands, and xcom2), knowing they would probably go on sale, just because I wanted to support quality games being ported to Switch. (My hope is that we’ll get the mass effect trilogy one day…). I hope that answers your question, because I do very much support devs I Iike and quality game development. My comically large backlog stands as proof of that.

I don’t know if this is specially an issue with PS5 but I have the game on switch and I have encountered zero crash. My buddy has it on PC and no issue as well.

I've been waiting for this game for about 2 years. I loved battle chasers nightwar and I was very excited with all the similarities but this review is pushing me back... I'll wait to see if they fix some things.

Okay I wrote a comment but had a change of heart after some thought. Ruined King prompted me to restart Nightwar, a game I purchased day 1 but never completed. As a HUGE fan of the old Battle Chasers comic as well as lover of RPGs, I knew Nightwar was a must have. However I wasn't 100% thrilled with a lot of the mechanics of the game. Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous game and you can never go wrong with Joe Mad's art style but it felt like a bare bones rpg. Now there were some little things I really loved such as the character animations and things of that nature. I suppose I just wasn't a fan of the game's version of the overworld. I also didn't like the long drawn out battle system. Many of the standard skirmishes felt like boss fights in some cases. It was great when it came to providing a challenge but it ultimately made each encounter feel like a chore. Now if Ruined King can be said to be a more refined version of NIghtwar then I think it'll be worth checking out. You also can't go wrong with the $30 price tag.

I played on PC and didn't encounter any gods. and as a person who hasn't played LoL at all, I think that playing along with Arcane is perfect for people unfamiliar with this world.

Appreciate this. I'm on the fence with this game but was never going to get it brand new anyways. I like that the story seems solid and personally the combat system is interesting to me. I'll dampen my hype...wait for other reviewer opinions and hopefully some of the bugs to get addressed with patches.

Anyone remember from battlechasers the airship filled with strong enemies on equal level as your party that chased you around on the map? Their loot NEVER got better than level 3, and that is if you managed to get through that hard fight. That kind of polish is what I worry about when I see the name Airship Syndicate on a video game. I was hoping this was a redemption story for the developers.

From what I’ve heard, it’s just a better tuned and more feature filled nightwar. Also I’ve seen other people review the game and haven’t seen the prevalent crashes which implies it might be a ps5 port issue. Idk, seems like a harsh review considering one of the first things they dogged it for was using similar art style and assets to a different game by the same studio. I’m not gonna lie, the review just felt like he didn’t like rpgs. Also I played a little and the laning bar at the bottom is completely visible and not hard to read at all. The person also didn’t mention anything about the equipment system, skill system or any game mechanics beyond shallow battle mechanics. this review felt rushed and didn’t really focus on much beyond things like the walk speed and crashes.

Yeah I agree. I’m about halfway through the game and it’s genuinely a really really good rpg and this review is bizarre to me. I dislike rpgs where battles quickly become formulaic and you can just hammer the same strategy every fight. But this game has genuinely interesting boss fights on heroic and it has me changing out party members and changing skills around because some skills are much better for some boss fights and others are important in other boss fights. It genuinely has me engaged and problem solving trying to find a solution for the fights and that’s far more interesting than rpgs I have played where it’s like “this is a fire enemy it’s weak to water” and you hit it with one ice water and win. That’s not real problem solving to me and it’s boring. I find clever solutions to get through the fights in ruined king and it’s fun. I like noisy pixel for a lot of reviews, but I agree this review feels rushed and like the reviewer was just disengaged from the experience not even trying to enjoy it.

Something I've been annoyed with ever since ye olde days of rpgs is the '3 makes a party' rule which leaves others on the bench. Sure, sometimes different team members have skills that are useful (or even necessary) to beat certain enemies/bosses and sure, sometimes there are battles which have a mandatory character participating. But WHAT IF rpgs gave you a choice at pivotal moments, where 2-3 characters have to be picked for yourself, while the rest goes on their own submission (either offscreen or by switching focus back and forth). If offscreen, their success rate could be linked to their levels/equipment such that you don't have to go through the whole "oh shit I have to remove my gear from character x because I might need it for the active party". This will have you end up with a more balanced team by the end of the game, rather than a few strong ones and a few losers (I'm looking at you Kimahri). Also, sometimes I WANT to use other characters, but I realize I haven't invested anything in them (e.g. Tarah & Thayne in SW:Quest) or none of my current party members are replaceable (Melanie + Ridis + Ash in VoC:TIDR).

Hold on. In this video I saw you select skip battle. Wtf? You can just skip battles? Do they auto fight? I loved battle chasers and wanted this game. But if you just skip over fights what's the point? Need something for December 10th to keep me busy on the plane for my snowboarding trip. Was hoping this would be it.

Fully agree with the review. The pacing is horrible and too slow. There's surprisingly a lot of back tracking and walking. You practically just walk and fight about 80% of the time. The RPG elements also feel tacked in and not organic to the game. Even some of the quests you do make you go ??? It's a shame too since the story is decent to good.

Important message if you play on PC!: this review is a PS5 only review. Sad to see the game isn't polished for all versions but on PC (Steam) there are no gamebreaking bugs. Also some exaggerations in this review like it's not actually that bad with traveling and fast travel. For me the lacking minimap made the running around A BIT tedious therefore I understand that if the game keeps crashing during running around that it makes it more tedious BUT... not all players will have this problem and the review missed to point that out. This isn't a review of Ruined King, this is a review of the PS5 version of Ruined King. Btw im not excusing these problems, I just wanted to make sure people (who are planning on playing PC) don't take this one review as fact and should watch other reviews before they make a decision whether the game and price is worth or not. I'm personally new to this kinds of games and I never thought that I'll be that invested into the fighting mechanics. I first bought the game because I like the League of Legends story but now I don't even care about the story that much because the gameplay is so fun for me

Wow, this is a harsh review and considering how few there are on this game, I'm sorry to see it. I'm several hours in, about 25% through the story and I like it a lot. Enough like BattleChasers to draw me in, but combat is different enough to keep me engaged. I also know nothing about League, but I'm enjoying the characters and story. Also, on PS4, I have yet to experience any crashes or bugs.

why don't they just put league of legends on console!? how am i supposed to get invested with a cheap game like this i dont own a pc but riot got me interested in lore with arcane and now i have nothing to play in the franchise except this :( alot of pc tactics games come to console,oh well
