Quick and easy restoration of a real nice, hand made, woodworking tool I found at a flea market. Being in such bad shape I was able to buy this one for just 1€. So this was a real happy find for me! I love to bring back to like and to use this kind of stuff and it's the perfect opportunity for some more wood lathe work to make new handles.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:
www.amazon.com...
It's affiliate marketing, so if you order something from here you'll help the channel for free! Thank you!
Index of operation and materials:
0:42 Remove rust with steel wire wheel on my big bench grinder • 1950s Italian Bench Gr...
1:10 Here you can see it is forged out of a file or a rasp
1:20 Straighten the tang, very easy with just a bit of heat for such a small mass
1:30 The small and tall anvil is always super handy • Small Anvil Restoratio...
1:50 Re grind bevels on 2x72 belt grinder
2:35 Hand sand up to 1200 grit sandpaper
3:13 Buff with cotton wheel and fine polishing coumpound
3:40 Cut piece of random wood for the handles
4:13 Turning the handles with the wood lathe • New To Me, 1912 Wood L...
5:10 I decided to try out the homemade ball turner that came with the lathe, works well but I need to set it up more perpendicular to the work if I want to make real balls and not eggs!
6:42 Seal the wood with ca glue, repeat three times
7:27 Press brass ferrule, pleased with the fit, very snug!
7:50 Drill tang hole with Rosa drill press • ROSA Drill Press Resto...
8:28 Grind tangs to shape, cross section matches the hole, with the top part a bit wider for a good press fit. I have this kind of fit on other similar tools and never came loose
9:30 A bit of boiled linseed oil for protection and finish
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

About 150 years ago, someone who didn't have much money took an old, worn out mill file to a local blacksmith, and had him re- forge it into a draw-shave. He made some simple handles for it, and had a useful tool. Now, you found it, old and neglected, and have given it it's third life - and again, it can serve as both a useful tool as well as a symbol of how resourceful people can be when they have very little, but can still create and accomplish great things.

Beautiful! I'm glad we are still here enjoying this kind of work, always amazed how ancient craftsmen customized as many forms as their needs, not like worldwide standard tools today. I made once nearly the same, among my thousands restaurations (in French), we call it "une plane", your one has a more curved angle. You baste super glue before sawing and varnish the 2 handles just in case wood fiber is not strong enough?

It can be used for many purposes, hollowing chair bottoms, bow building, handle building, the list goes on and on. It just gives you another angle to approach the wood with a blade. Table legs come to mind but for myself bows mostly.

Awesome work, handles look beautiful and the process of making them with this new tool is very satisfying to watch. But how come they won't come loose? It seems like they should, cuz with every cut you pull them in the direction that should loosen the fit. I trust your judgement if you say more tools with this fit works properly but Im pretty curious how come it doesn't fall off when there is nothing to really hold the tangs inside of the wood.
@mred8002
@mred8002 4 жыл бұрын
Agree with your assessment of his work. I have a pair of these ‘spoke shaves’, one concave and one convex, with identical handle affixing method. They haven’t pulled off in a hundred years for the one, and the other developed a crack and I replaced one handle. But not pretty as his. I think since they are not being subjected to impacts such as hammering they are not pulled off. More of a large pocketknife I suppose.
@stormkhan4250
@stormkhan4250 4 жыл бұрын
Those handles would seem like they should pull off since they get tugged on when being used. At the same time they are jammed into wooden handles which tends to push back against the tangs a bit to form a tight grip and also the handles are angled apart so they have some side ways force being applied instead of straight back to pull them off. On the other hand, if you noticed at the beginning he hammered the 2 tangs straight, this was the original maker bending the ends around the back of the handles to prevent them being pulled off. Not sure whether I like BBP's approach better or not. I really like those new handles he put on but at the same time they have a higher chance of getting pulled off in use...oh well.

question BB I noticed that other draw knives you have done have a flatter or straight blade profile instead of curved like this one, what is the reason and is there a specific application for each thype of blade profile?
@alfiversen7023
@alfiversen7023 4 жыл бұрын
madcap magician A straight blade, or one curved UP slightly is a very useful tool in certain wood working situations. Rough outlines of handles and such. I have never seen one with a downward curve- and can’t think of any practical applications. Certainly not with an edge like that.
