Russell I read you’re book and I think you’re spot on when it comes to the journey and recovery. I feel exactly the way you describe from childhood to addiction to recovery. I was an extremely heavy user of crack, heroin, and fentanyl. I was deemed unrecoverable. But after 1/4 oz of crack a day, 8gms of fentanyl IV, and thousands of pills later along with 15 fent ODs I got clean. Been a year and 3 months clean. Truly a miracle. If anyone feels like they’re too far gone, believe and trust that you are not. We all have a chance to get clean. Realize this and want it. Want it more than anything else and you will attain it, when you’re ready.
@KathyHussey0637 ай бұрын
Amen, take it 10 minutes at a time the first week because anyone can do anything for ten minutes, even getting eaten by a friggin' shark cause we know it happens, you too can get through each day at by only staying in the present minutes you are living in. So pray as much as you need to, ask for heelp from whatever resources are available, take lomotil for diahrhea, advil for aches & sleeping med like trazodone will knock you out the first 7 nights. Muscle relaxers for jimmy legs, lots of water & chicken broth too, jello if you can. Then: believe you'll be clean & free because that's a most needed ingredient to do anything = the belief that it's possible. It IS possinle for you & hundreds of thousands prove it daily. You can be free & it may take you a couuple of tries to get it to stick, but you learn more about how to succeed, what to avod each time so if you just keep getting back up, you can not be held down by this, you WILL take back your own life!!

Russel's sobriety , anyone's sobriety really, is a gift to themselves. This man has turned his success in sobriety into a gift to all of us who live with addiction. It is so refreshing to hear someone articulate their feelings and artfully deliver their thoughts and feelings and experience in a way that doesn't make us feel like "I was an idiot, you are an idiot, we will all be idiots together forever, Amen" I find that the majority of the 12 step meetings are repetitive, glorify the"bad old days" and stuff us all in a box. I walk out the door feeling like I'm a looser. A low life. I love language and eagerly wrapped my ears around every word he utters. It's great to hear an Intligent person admit they are on the same journey as millions of us are. It seems to me that our media seeks out only the homeless to speak publicly on the subject, which gives the impression that all addicts are from cardboard cities. Addiction is in EVERY class of society. It doesn't discriminate. Rich, poor, no one is immune.

I understand; his energy is pure; he is on fire, and that intensity is fueled by his passion to support others, so I can imagine his laser of light, his sword of truth and strong loving focus has sent that light into all the places where dead and dense energy are holding on inside us, as we listen, and this light is clearing, loosening, and dismantling all that no longer serves us. I suddenly fell asleep, had to LAY DOWN...I took a nap for an hour, to allow the energies to move through me. I know that hour nap helped me, as it was playing, and then I went back and listened to the whole thing again, wide awake. Ha. So good!

He's not one-of-a-kind -he's one of billions of addicts. The behavior is all out of control. Whether screwing over Katy Perry or the girl down the street, doesn't matter. Who hurt a lot of people and then got nice teeth Probably his most exceptional quality is being a Brit with nice teeth

You should read his books! They’re so incredible. Homie who commented before me just a real negative person who obviously hasn’t been thru a whole lot in life.
@CostcoguyBoom Жыл бұрын
@@fitbroomdisagree, he probably is an addict as well who understands both sides. I’ve been through tons more than Russel. When you survive it you can actually learn far more than most people ever will. It is one of the greatest teachers. He got lucky to get out of that life fairly early. But he always got substitutes in other forms rather than conquering it. Plenty of people have more wisdom but aren’t ever heard from and put into the spotlight. It may very well be you that hasn’t been through enough yet. I would have a slightly different take than that guy but I can understand where he is coming from. I wouldn’t be so negative I guess, but I get the anger. The propping people up like this is not healthy either. If you were at the level of some of us then you would not idolize like so many do here in this comment section. It’s just not right.
@KathyHussey063 Жыл бұрын
@@CostcoguyBoom Really EVERY one of us is a "one of a kind", literally,, at least as far as we know right now. (There could be multi dimensions wth many more versions of the same ME existing in each 1 for all I know.... but....) So there's nothing wrong with seeing any person as a one of a kind, because they are. #2) EVEN every addict is still an individual who's FAR different from every other addict or person. "Addict" is a descriptor of a person, one of them but it's not WHO or WHAT the person IS, it is a part of that person, a quality they (at present) may have. So the commenter above who dismissed billions of addicts, that person themselves is likely addicted to something; even if they don't or haven't ever acknwledged it, whether it's a drug, alcohol, tobacco, food, sex, gambling, video games, phone sex, being on the internet, their cell phone or shopping..or something we don't know about yet. It's mankind's battle to NOT become addicted to anything or anyone. More knowledge is needed about WHY all the addictions happen so easily to so many people, because we need to know more about how to prevent them ever starting and how better to help those who want to quit, because sadly in this country there is NO help if you have NO health insurance, REAL insurance and how many addicts do you think have health insurance or even have full time jobs? Even when an addict does have Healh Insurance it's a good bet that their policy dosen't even cover addiction treatment or rehabs, which charge absolutely RIDICULOUS prices to admit a patient no matter how dire their situation is. They'll send aVERY SICK, near death person (oh wait, they're just an "addict" as the guy said, guess it's easier to think like that than to think about how it's a person, a citizen, or a 19 year old that our government helped to get them addicted by allowing crooked Pharma. Co.'s to lie & push heroin level opiods on mllions across the nation, including hundreds of thousands of young people/ teens (on Soc. Sec.Disability Ins. for healthcare here), but then Conngress sat by allowing hundreds ofthousands to die, not caring about the millions the drug has killed, not providing ANY help for citizens whose lives were ruined by the drug they intentionally alllowed to ravage poor annd sick people, to get off the opiods now. So called rehabs send VERY SICK, near DEATH people off to Emergency Rooms, where they'll give them something to stabilize them JUST ENOUGH to get them out of the Em. Room's doors, and bck home, if they have a home... they wake up in withdrawal again. I understand the anger they might be feeling, many addicts do a lot of horrible things. I myself have been put through hell in my lifetime by a few addicts who did different things to me or my loved ones, but it's far more complex issue than lumping them into one category & condemning them. If you've ever been addicted to anything then you know why and if a person has not & they do not even try to put themselves in another's shoes to see the immense suffering they're going through at all, that most had no idea they were getting themselves into until it was too late to avoid it.... Well often there are hard lessons ahead for those who can not have any compassion.

I have some similarities w Russell as many do. Addict from age 14, entered rehab at 30, was a cutter, had a series of relapses over several yrs at lesser and lesser intervals until eventually doing my last drug in April of 2019. People who I still see in that cycle I just pray that they can survive themselves...or long enough to finally achieve clarity, which does not come until it comes. I'm now 56. Now I sit in frequent fear, depression, anxiety, but I prefer it to being on drugs. Maybe somewhat like RB I found some salvation in reading...everything. Fiction, non fiction. A few thousand pages a month on average. Today when I went to get my coffee, the clerk at 7-11 told me he picked up extra shifts because he knows he is a danger to himself when not working. Hats off to that man and I pray for calm and solace for him.

My biggest take-away is that as mothers and fathers we have a massive responsibility to raise our kids to be compassionate and kind and not to be individualistic and materialistic, and to BE the example. It's hard to get it right, but it's the only way to get humanity back on track. We're ultimately raising adults, not children. If everyone thinks they can't make a difference, no one will.

Oh my goodness. Russell just perfectly described my feelings when he said 'I realised I'd been having an anxiety attack my whole life'. I may have been happy when I was very little, but I can't remember. From the time/age when I can remember, my parrents fought, finally split & it took 8 years for them to get divorced, because of a change in the law, halfway through the proceedings. It was a very turbulent time. My Mum left home a couple of months before I started senior school. We moved home that year too. Internally I was a mess. This was 1968 & suddenly, the boys in big school were scary. They bullied the girls, a lot. They sexually assaulted us on a regular basis & we never thought to report it, because nobody had ever taught us that it was wrong. So we put up with it, even though it made me a bag of nerves every day at school. Then, when I was 15, I was raped by a middle aged Man. I became pregnant & had to undergo an abortion. Another very traumatic time. I was living with my Mum by then & kept what happened from my Dad, as he would have blamed her. And finally, I will get to the point (apologies for the long ramble). Ever since then, I have always been on edge, because you never know what is around the next corner. I've lived my life in perpetual fear. It didn't necessarily show on the outside, in fact I was a bit of a clown. But I noticed the fear for the first time, while sitting on a bus. I suddenly became aware that I was clenching my buttocks. Then realised that every part of me was tense. It was like a type of locked in syndrome. Throughout my life, that has never changed. If I put my mind to relax, I can manage it, but my default position is where every part of my body is tense. It's no wonder that I suffer a lot of cramps. The rape was followed by disastrous relationships & now, I am 66 & what Russell just said, was a sort of lightbulb moment. I've obviously always known that I've been on edge for what seems like forever, but hearing his words, just summed it up perfectly.

His use of language, his emotive expression, his wisdom and knowledge gained through real life experience having shaped one very colourful and beautiful mind. Sometimes the lack of connection when going through a drug phase can actually be the absolute means of finding ones own self. Im a firm believer that people / acquaintances can often muddy the mind when trying to navigate the how's and why's of life!, Time spent alone is the only way to truly find ourselves in an already crowded and controlled world. Is it any wonder we all get lost in the vortex of bills, worry, parking fines, told what we can and cant have/do, lied to by Govt's whilst they frantically line their own filthy pockets with lower and middle class funds etc etc. I'm blown away.... loved this so much. Thank you xx Michaela

What he said about being a parent, just so moving. And so true. Being a mom is the most spiritual endeavor and I'm bracing myself for the pain to come as my very intelligent, sensitive ten year old forges her path in the world. It is the most beautiful thing, and in some ways I feel to be more a child again myself as my strong girl takes the lead and I marvel and constantly try to keep myself in check so I can be the best support she can have.

It is so calming to hear, that other parents with a sense for the spiritual life are parenting their children. We need it desperately in the future generations. I think we should be focus on emotional intelligence more than the cognitive one.

It makes me sad that these things aren't everywhere. I do and think the things he does but cannot articulate it so beautifully and receive anger and contempt for it cause most people don't get it or respect it as most people around them aren't any of that.

Such a great interview. Steven, you make your interviewers dance in a genuine heartfelt way. I love how you share how you relate. I can now put Russell in the category of "my people". He's a philosopher, a comedian, a wisdom heart. I agree with the necessity of being conscious. That's where I am learning to stand. Listening to Russell is so supportive for me. He is a mentor. I learned more about him today. ( and me) I want to listen again. Thank you!

He is a self confessed narcissist, you should be running. Maybe definition of the terms used to describe Brand should be published at top of article . Narcissistic personality disorder leads to abuse of everyone in the circle. Hmm. Many times Russel has told people to shut up about their own drug addiction while pretending he is a reformed addict. 😊

@@willsshepherd2976 Hmmm.........and yet here you are on a video about him, scrolling through the comment section to add your wholly negative assessment of a person's character, that's odd in itself. I'm willing to bet good money you've spent less than an hour of your life researching Brand & his life, so you haven't done enough to actually know whether your version of him is true or if this commenter's view of him is the truth or if (what's more likely the truth is) that he's a 'guy', just like most guys/human beings who are stuffed full of a contradicting qualities, both good & bad, just like every single one of us self righteous, opinionated, unmerciful, half blind, judgey humans are.

If I was able to talk so poetically, eloquently and effortlessly as Russell, I'd feel unstoppable. His imagination is in a league of its own. No wonder he has the capacity to be so witty, intelligent yet also so loving and in the present. After all he's been through in his life it's truly remarkable what he has become - 100 years from now it would be an injustice for him not to be considered one of the most influential figures of modern times.

I was very active in AA for about 5 years and gradually gave myself (my time) over to the demands of my job at the time. Since I was so "needed" at my job, I gradually began to miss meetings and eventually eased myself out of the program and fellowship completely. If I'm honest, my life was happiest when I was involved and actively practicing the spiritual principles. I'm looking to ease myself back in to living more like I was then and found this talk very inspiring. I recently moved and would like to find that group of people again and get back to it. This was a great place to start. Thank you.

AA worked for me as a short term fix when I needed it. 1st went in year 2000 for 3 meetings then in 2015 for 3 meetings TCA one to one councillors was 2 yrs once a week between 2010 and 2012 went to Rehab in 2020 recently joined TCA in 2024 again drop in meetings and one to one's. I go to Church once a week and started Antabuse a week ago now 100% determined to be teatotal. This 25 year journey and battle of ups and downs just had to end.

What an honour to listen to Russell on this podcast, the way he conducts sentences and expresses ideas is incredibly unique and thought provoking and I think you're going to really enjoy this one. His tales of walking mountains, sipping teas and pondering the ways of our wonderful world had me hanging on every word. I consider myself lucky to watch this interview, he’s such an interesting chap!

God bless you. Even after 32-plus years clean (a day at a time) Russell hits home with me too. What you are doing is nothing less than heroic. To confront our demons takes an enormous amount of spiritual courage. I know with every fiber of my being you can do this. The foundation of my program has always been simple. If it helps in any way I will be grateful. If not, no offense is intended. There are times my recovery is complicated, but everyday the following are my mandatory recovery steps. 1. First thing every morning I get on my knees and ask God for help and surrender my will. (Even if you don't believe, please do it anyway) ❤❤❤ (took me a year to believe) 2. Go to a meeting every day. 3. Before bed, get on my knees to thank God for one clean day. (Again, even if you don't believe it) There is other important work such as, the 12 steps, and getting a sponsor with both significant and quality time. But for me, especially early on, there were many times that's all I was capable of. Every day clean is a win.

Hearing you discuss the principles that are the foundation of how I live each day is pretty darn cool. In the beginning, I did what was suggested to save my own life. Now 30 years later I practice the principles Russell is talking about to stay centered and out of my own way. The path is simple but not easy however it allows me to be at peace most days. I found your channel by accident and now I'm a subscriber..you're doing great stuff Steven Thank you!

My life is so much better, and by using the suffering that we all experience, we can help others going through similar things. Amazing conversation both of you. I hope anyone reading is ok inside 🖤
