EDIT: I didn't get notifications about this thread for a long time so I didn't engage with the various discussions, so I'll answer them here as best as possible. My parents were diplomats stationed in Dubai and I happened to be born there. I wanted citizenship because Dubai is very close culturally and geographically to India. Being a citizen of UAE would have been great to be a part of a modern country and be able to travel to India whenever I chose. My parents being diplomats would have meant I would have gotten a good job and contributed to the economy, not be a leech and get benefits like some have stated. I live in the US (am a citizen) and have missed out on being a part of Arab/Indian culture...not much of it was around where I grew up. I understand that Arabs wouldn't have wanted to be a minority, but I was not a leech, so no reason to not have some way for me to become a citizen if I could prove I was contributing to the country in a significant way.

As an Indian, I can say Indians are building most of the countries. Alof of business in UAE, Europe and USA are owned by Gujrati and Marwari families from India. While states like UP, Bihar, Bengal etc are catering for cheap labour.

Abu Baker Baobaid correction.. how rich 3 indian businessmen are when they visit dubai. 98.9% of the indian population are immigrant workers. Their passports are taken from them as part of their employment and they have no official covil rights while there. That is why you get regular stories of indian maids in indentured servitude being beaten often, and sometimes (read two stories) of them being raped. Also one case where a maid fell out of a window and her owner did not save her while she was holding onto the ledge...

As an Indian, who lives in the US, has visited the middle-east, and have plenty of Arab friends, I don't find any of Russell's jokes offensive. And I see neither do most Arabs, Caucasians, or folks from the subcontinent. The thing is, there's plenty of ignorance when it comes to knowing, and treating our fellow human beings with respect and compassion. Russell does a fine job of making the uncomfortable truths digestible. But the truth behind them is bitter. By playing up these stereotypes, he precisely does the opposite - breaking down the walls around these stereotypes. As he himself says " ... you can always judge the audience by the timing of their laughs .. " The ignorant ones laugh at the content, the smart ones at the intent :)
