I am Hungarian, and one of my foreign friends told me that when he listened to Hungarians talking - especially when we say goodbye over the phone, it sounds like some nasty rap song. Jo (meaning good or okay, pronounced as 'yo') and puszi (meaning kiss - on the cheek, pronounced as pusy), so usually we end conversations like "jo, jo, puszi, puszi - usually repeating this a few times, as we try to end a conversation, well, what can we do :D

CJ Ruaya Hey, you're Filipino? I'd like to ask you something. I'm always curious. Why is the country name "the Philippines" but the people of the Philippines are Filipino? Why not the Filippines or Philipino? And why do you have "the" in front of the country name? I mean, we don't call "the Canada" or "the India", right?
@CJYR237 жыл бұрын
Yonguk Lee You can search it yourself but I'll try to answer your questions. Philippines was named after the King of Spain when a spanish explorer discovered our islands. He called it Las Islas Filipinas which translates to The Philippine Islands in English after the Americans colonized us. When the Americans departed we changed it to The Philippines. There's still "The" because our country's name remained as a colonial name. Filipino is derive from the word Filipinas and only the elites were allowed to call themselves Filipinos and the common people as Indios. Then a group of people back in 19th century encouraged people to call themselves Filipino to spread nationalism and to fight the colonizers. Just like in Indonesia and the other countries, they just translated the name that was given to them by their colonizers into their own native language.

When I was spending my summers off from college working as an aid in a nursing home (I was going to college for nursing and it was a good way to earn spending money and learn about things in my field, even though I wanted to be a NICU nurse, the other end of the age spectrum), and as always, it was stocked with Filipino nurses. And they always got a huge kick out of calling me "SuSu". My name is, of course, Sue. So it was a laugh riot hearing "SuSu! (giggle) Susu! (giggle) Where are you, Susu? (giggle)" thru the halls as I was feeding, bathing and changing the diapers of my patients.

It isn't hard learning another language if you are keen on being linguistic. There are a lot of shows in different languages with English subtitles. Through watching Thai, Korean, Bangladesh, Japanese shows with English subtitles, learnt some words. So far I can proudly say that I can converse in 7languages. But I am boasting my capability but simply stating that if you are keen on something & set your mind to it, it is possible...Jia Yo, Susu!!! 🤗🤗

Wait... So indians say susu when a little kid wants to go pee. In Lithuania we have a word for that aswell it's "sysiu" (pronounced seesoo) so it's almost the same 🤔
