Woooow!!! Finally someone explained the logical purpose for the distinction between these two hook versions. No other trainer ever could break it down. Everybody just always said, the version with palm facing down is the text book way of throwing and the one with the thumb facing upward and the palm facing inward is the modified one.

This is interesting Bivol really mastered this technique if you watch him on the mitts. I was looking to see if the "soviet hook" was real.
@calburner46352 жыл бұрын
The Russian hook you are referring to is probably the Russian check hook, also called the Soviet, Eastern, and Cuban check hook. Instead of pivoting to get off center, you simply side with your lead foot, leaving you in a switched stance . There is an excellent lesson of the Russian check hook on this channel. CharlesSalBox has some great videos on it, too. They are really helpful. It is the better and more natural way to throw the check hook.
@Wilsongaboi2 жыл бұрын
@@calburner4635 Interesting, yea its looks really fluid to me almost looks like it doesn't have a lot of power (because there isn't that huge body "twist" that you typically see with american boxers), but you can see the results are effective and sound impactful on the mitts.

This is the advantage I have found with horizontal hook, although the vertical is so much more powerful. I use either, depending on the situation.

Dempsey describes this in his book 'Championship fighting', where he describes it as a way to throw a hook without having to telegraph your shoulders as a first punch. He called it a left corkscrew, which begins as a sort of jab but than explosively turns into the corkscrew.

This is exactly how I throw my hooks but my coaches keep correcting my form to force a horizontal position but my shoulder isn't letting me do that with power. It feels like I can dislocated my shoulder or have weak punches.
@Serganten1 Жыл бұрын
Learn both for different ranges/situations. I had the same thing like you when I boxed, the vertical felt much more natural and the horizontal felt unnatural for my shoulder. But there are times when the horizontal will be better and so it is good to know it. When you practice enouth and train/strech the shoulder properly you will be able to throw it without the feeling of discomfort.

vertical hook is when the palm of the fist is facing you (line of the knucles is vertical ). Horizontal hook is whem palm is faving down , line of the knucles is horizontal or even a little more angling down

Vertical hook engages biceps and forearms more and is easier on the shoulder, think about how a neutral grip pullup or single arm row is always stronger than a pronated/overhand pullup/row However the extra range of the horizontal hook can make the difference on its own, always think tactically and adjust to the current situation
@desmondmccallum29162 жыл бұрын
Vertical is stronger, but if it won't land it would be useless in that situation. Even the horizontal could knock someone out by landing on the sweet spot, on the chin and if it isn't seen or expected
@V125092 жыл бұрын
Today I thought about this in the training, though I’ve got a question, can I punch with the first knuckle in order to have an even longer extension in the horizontal hook? Or do I need to make sure I still punch with the second knuckle?
@maximummaximum72662 жыл бұрын
In my opinion you can try this as long as the knuckles hit (with the first knuckle first) and not the side of the hand which hits also but only with the first knuckle. This would be a wrong hand Position. 'Aiming to use the second knuckle' is a good way to avoid this mistake.

Someone who has more experience in boxing told me that it is personal preference and there's no mistake with throwing a hook palm facing towards you and down.But after watching that video,I noticed a difference between them,the problem was when I have thrown my mid range hook with palm facing down it seemed like my shoulder is participated while I was punching a heavybag as a result I got used to throw a hook like that
