I LOVE This game, used to play it as a little kid. As for "Why is every chest fake" ... that's totally dependent on your actions. The first chest is always a Magician, second chest is an upgrade. Keep your chest route in mind and you'll never be surprised. As for Professional mode... It's correct, the second playthrough in "Practice" is Professional mode... but you always need to do 2 playthroughs regardless to get the Psycho Cannon. In professional mode, there's additional obstacles in Level 2 (blue platforms in the turtle village) and level 3 (blue fire obstacles when traversing that statues tongues)... I can't remember if there's any substantial changes to levels 4 and 5.

@@chrisrj9871 This Version of "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" for the genesis was programmed by Yuji Naka! He used this experience in programming the sloped landscapes of the levels when programming Sonic, which is why the physics in the Genesis Sonics are so good!

He makes it harder than it needs to be skipping most of the treasure chests. I also can't believe he still hasn't figured out that the first chest you open will always be the sorcerer so skipping them doesn't gain you anything.

I downloaded this game onto a blackberry phone when I worked at a casino and played it using a number pad, and the way the keys were mapped if you jumped, it always caused you to jump forward at the same time. It was insanely fun and difficult. I played it so much that I eventually got to the point where I started challenging myself to keep the magic armor all the way to Loki for no hit runs. Good times....good times.

About chests, not sure if you figured it out but they're sequential. First chest is always a wizard who can turn you into a duck or old man. Second one is always an armor upgrade. 3rd one I forget. Might be weapon or might just be wizard again. And you don't have to open the chest, merely spawn them. There's a ton of hidden chests in the game by touching spawn points. They're often at random places and you can't see them. Hit the invisible trigger and a chest will spawn. And while the order of things may vary depending on which game you're playing in the franchise, the mechanics are still very similar in almost all of the other games. Also daggers are usually the best normal weapon. They're fast, you can throw 3 of them at once, they cover the length of the screen and they are straightforward in usage. And the best part about it is the magic that summons a double that also throws 3 daggers and copies you for extra high dps. Best weapon is that blue fireball/sacred flame though. It has limited range without the magic armor, but it still goes through walls. And it has a lot more range if you do have the magic armor. It's also a very wide projectile with a large hitbox and does a ton of damage. It makes quick work of anything really.

Also on professional, besides more enemies, there changes to stages 2 and 3 in terms of environments. Treasure chest have a different cycle(practice first chest is always magician and next is gold armor, if hit between first chest and 2nd, you get your normal armor back) but on professional, if you’re hit after first chest, the next chest is also a magician, followed by an item, then armor, then cycle repeats.

I think this is the best of the 3 old games. I was never too fond of the NES game and the SNES feels kinda cheap and jank at too many moments. I think this game strikes the best balance between difficult and level design. It feels more intricately designed, so to speak.

i played this too much as a kid, there is an order to the way the chests spawn like in the others, but this one is in order of number of chests spawned not opened and player state at time of chest proc. I remember the sequence for the chest is if you open one trickster, the next chest would be armor or weapon . The most efficient weapon is the little knife, which when you got the super armor you can get a clone after charged. I used to beat this game with 1 life when I was 8 year old

every FIRST chest that pops up in the area (respawn or checkpoint area) will be a fake/magician/bad chest.. backtracking usually spawns chests, you just need to know where those chest spawn points are..
