Join Barefoot Doctors Sailing FOR VERY RECENT UPDATE as we skip to our meet up again after 113 days apart and finally hold each other close after such a long time.... We are in Dubai to see the up to date progress of the build of our new Portofino 52, the shallow draft, beachable, aluminium catamaran that we are having built to our specs in Dubai! Very exciting stuff where we see our boat (partially built) for the very first time...
We also walk through the Portofino 47 that is 6 months ahead of our build so we can get a very idea of the space that we will get and how our boat will FEEL like in 6 months time!
Watch to end though because we have a very difficult decision to make on a very personal level that we need all your advice on - so please help us out to allow us to make the right decision in this important matter...
The first Patreon sailing event is in the week of 17th Sept in Gocek, Turkey so those lucky to be patrons on our channel can join us for this great week of sailing the Turquoise Coast of Turkey with us on our Leopard 45!!! Join up if you want to have those opportunities...
Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, join us for sailing events in Gocek, Turkey (Sept 2023), Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
WHAT IS TUFMINDS
The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. Thanks very much guys for your kind words! You are the ones doing it tough though with the big crossings and the two young kids - you are inspirational to all young hopeful sailors who are also considering having family on the way.... We just had to survive 3 months and 3 weeks without each other. Hope your crossing and wintering is progressing well and enjoy the break.

Love the new boat can’t wait to see it sail as far as the hair goes, let it grow until the boats done then you can ride the bow letting the wind blow through your long hair then instead of trying to untangle it, you can just cut it Sounds like a good plan.

Absolutely wonderful to see you two back together again !!! Your boat already looks stunning, the design, construction and technology. Lots of questions, but will wait patiently. Blah blah blah. What motors are you getting, what sails are you getting, what instruments will you be installing etc etc etc. The long hair is far more suited for a globe trotting, ocean crossing merry man. Lots of love to both of you, and looking forward to following your upcoming adventures.

Awesome. I see the quality and you picked right. I am not sure if you ever watch Sailing Dauntless. They installed a lightning system which works. Every location with this one installed has never been stuck by lightning. Now would be the time to talk with Portofino about adding it. Sure its not cheap but a peace of mind and 1 lightning strike would cost more than installing this.
@Foxhaunter21
@Foxhaunter21 11 ай бұрын
There's no need for an additional lightning protection system. Due to the alluminium construction of the P52, there is a continuous, conductive connection to the water. Thus, the entire hull is a Faraday cage and optimally directs the lightning directly into the water.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 11 ай бұрын
Hi Fox Haunter, that is exactly what I thought too but when we spoke to the Garcia folk, they said that the risk was still there and I believe it's because the wires from outside (eg the mast, solar panels, lights, VHF etc) lead into the middle of the boat so the impulse is transmitted inside and the electrical damage then occurs anyway.... We are having to do some serious investigations over this next year! If you have other info please share with us.
@Foxhaunter21
@Foxhaunter21 11 ай бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Hi John, I've done some research myself, as I'm also planning to buy a catamaran. As far as I have found, there are two options: lightning protection or lightning rods. As far as I know 'Sailing Dauntless' installed a lightning protection system similar to this one: elna*de/en/sea/ddce-lightning-protection/ (replace '*' with '.') 'Just catamarans' now also sells these systems. This is more of a stealth system to become invisible to lightning. On a fiberglass boat, a lightning strike would randomly 'eat' through the whole boat, destroying electronics and, in the worst case, causing a hull breach. But this system adds up to 7kg at the top of the mast, which is a significant physical lever. There is no definitive proof of the effectiveness of these systems. It's like Co**na: You just have to believe it. ;) With an aluminum boat, a simple lightning rod at the top of the mast seems to make the most sense to me. The mast with stays and shrouds form the basic structure of a Faraday cage, and with an aluminum shell the cage is complete. Here is a link: sail24*com/praxis/blitzschutz-on-yachts/ (replace '*' with '.') Unfortunately in German, but Google can help. Electronics can of course also be destroyed here, but the lightning does not have to 'eat' its way through the boat by force. in the end there is no such thing as 100% security in the event of a lightning strike. "In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." ;) Greetings

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 I believe he said that lightning hits where negative energy is. That unit removes that energy from around the whole boat. I would look into it. you are gonna be on a metal boat.

Lovely to see you reunited! ♥♥ Your boat is going to be gorgeous, but wishing there was a magic wand to make it happen faster. The anticipation would be driving me whacko if I was the one waiting. As for the hair, maybe consider just getting a trim to keep it neatened up a bit and allow the fresh ends to become blonder as you grow it out more. I've found the problem with grey hair is that it is a bit stiffer and doesn't want to lie down as neatly. I've been all grey for about 10 years and the texture and wave make it a bit harder to get it going where I want.

Really exciting to see this boat come together. I love the thought process you put into it and the confidence to build instead of buy a more stock boat. One question I have is if you can ask about friction stir welding. Its worth a look into tgis if you haven’t heard of it. Lots of KZbin vids. I notice extensively used in the shipbuilding business as it’s lighter, weight and stronger than traditional welding. SpaceX uses it on its rockets now. Anyway, I was curious if this would come up or if you could ask the builder his thoughts on it. Really enjoy your channel and fun to see you taking life in stride and building this boat.

Morning Eli - John... Your one hull looks great! Hard to believe no fairing, but the shape is beautiful! It will be a long wait till November to see the 2 halves together, worth it. As for your hair... Started losing mine at 20, lost most by 30, gone by 35 ( for the time line, I am 66 now). Can't help. However, if you want to talk beards... I have had a beard on & off since 1973, mostly on; had to shave in the Navy for a couple of months, then grew it back. Chin has not seen daylight since 1985. Current length - just above mid chest; longest - to belly button. "Covid beard..." 😉 Fair winds...

Whoo Hoo Hi guys. See you after the video! I'm SO glad you guys booked a room! So glad you had a safe trip Jon. Now let us see the boat! WOW!!! What a boat! The bible advises not to envy your fellow man....But Ihave to say, I'm super envious! Great video and footage of the boat! I can't wait to see this finished! As for the hair Jon, try a nice gel that is also fragranced, that way when the girls get close to kiss your cheek, you will smell lovely and they will be impressed as you will be irresistible. My barber gave me a great product. It's in my car so when I get out there next I'll add a post script to the name. Or give me your address in Dubai and I'll post you some. Cheers Guys!

Hi again Lincoln, the centreboard can be brought up manually with a winch handle too, so that is covered. The insulation will be around all the hull and external aluminium parts of the boat. When - not sure but probably after the welding is finished and before the inside fitout has started... Bridgedeck heights - not sure why several folk think the 47 has low bridgedeck - it has 85cm which is reasonable and similar to most of the other performance cats. The 52 also has 85cm bridge deck height. Notch cut - great idea, might be a the way we go...

Bridgedeck on both is over 85cm - the shoulder is some way above the waterline so there is good clearance on both boats... But when they are both launched, we will see for sure.

Thank you for your amazing content. The universe have you both on a wonderful path, filled with sadness and topped off with incredible joy. I was convinced on owning a Leapord 50, now I am convinced to get a Portofino, however i am stuck between the 47 and the 52 which you had a massive part in. For me the question is the flybridge, you let go of the flybridge for performance increase, which is a worthy sacrifice. Seeing the performance of the 52 succeeding your expectations, would it be considered that a 52 with a flybridge design of the 47, would still give amazing performance around 15-20 knots with a raised mainsail? It will help tremendous to make up my mind in which one to get, since I love your 52 design and I love the flybridge of the 47. And my dream is to sail the Siberian strait above Russia, will the Portofino be adequate enough or should I look at the Exploracat options? Thank you again for your content and your amazingness. You are a wonderful incarnation of Angels. Ps: not sure if you reply on old videos and comments so I am copying and pasting this in all your videos. Apologies in advance for this, and also thank you for the answer I know you will think clearly of, and will help both buyers and sellers. ❤

Dear Somebody (and everyone is someone - not nobody!) Thank you so much for your very kind and generous compliments ad we are VERY GLAD that our content can have positive effects for you personally and everyone else that gets those benefits! As for the "reincarnation of angels" that is certainly the domain of Eli but I am happy to just be dragged along on her wing feathers! We are certainly working to make our path a beautiful one while dealing with high level issues, ironically right now as we are in the middle of legal processes to try and get some outcome from the fire damage - so you kind words are like words of support, helping us on the rocky road!!! As of the incredible joy, Eli and I always ensure we create the joy and love around us so that any negativity no matter how intense does not prevent our daily love and happiness... It is sometimes hard work to rise above it but we focus on what we have and not what we don't have and remember Eli's mother's wise words "Honey, everything's gonna be ALLLRIIIGHT!" So to your important questions - the flybridge will probably lose a knot to the speeds up to 12 knots and perhaps 2 knots from 12-20 - these are my estimates only. So really if you are still getting easy 12s - 15 knots in the right conditions and sailing almost wind speed in light winds, the 52 with a flybridge will be spectacular too. We are going to have loungers on the flybridge that have backs that can fix in sitting position as a compromise but no structure up there and we sacrificed the flybridge cause we wanted the boat to perform as well as it can with all it's other features as well. If you want to have a boat that is also bale to survive ice collisions then Portofino can easily make it to suit - slightly more aluminium supports, thicker aluminium in the bow and probably an extra ton or two by the end but that is "easily" done. I specified to them that we would not sail into iceberg areas so the heavy construction requirements were avoided. By the way, the 47 would probably be strong enough for icebergs as it is but it is much slower and there are many features that we got added to the 52 that makes it an amazing boat! So if you are serious, ask Raffaele about your specs and I'm sure it can be done!!! Yes we do watch for comments on old videos and get to answer almost every one. Fortunately KZbin has a filter that allows us to see comments that we have not responded to so this catches the comments on old videos - but feel free to drop the comments in every other video as it would probably be good for others to see and improve our KZbin ratings!!! LOL.

Thanks for the comments and nice suggestion of the beard... The waterline stops before the end of the hulls transom curve so continuing the hull to curve further up is not necessary as not its the water and presumably adds weight. They then made that stern a design feature, I believe.

I will of course follow with a keen eye on flexing of hull and rigging. I am an ex Sailing instructor with the RYA. I would love to have done what you two are doing. Such an adventure for sure. As I was older, when my wife died of COPD. I did sell everything back in England But settled in Southern Leyte, Philipinnes and married a Philipino Lady. 19 years younger than me. Now I am just an armchair Sailer, And I enjoy it so much because i can relate to everything thats involved. Plus I am seeing places around the world I would never have seen otherwise. @@bobfitz6358 HI Bob and thanks for the feedback. Actually they are working on a visa for boats sailing in the EU as the 3 month Schengen rules are really impractical so some of the Med countries are working to get a sailing visa of some kind organised.... Thanks for you history and the Phillipines is a nice place to live - we spent several years in Bali too! Enjoy coming along with us - it should be a very interesting ride as the fire that destroyed our boat got us focussed on exactly what we wanted and no-one made those sorts of boats. I do not consider myself to be outrageous or unusual but with the Australian experience of lifting keels, shallow draft and beaching the boat, it is such an amazing improvement in quality of sailing life that we decided the nest boat boat needed that (+ a few extras!) So enjoy the ride and we welcome any advice and comments please as we are all learning all the time....

May i ask why having both keel and lifting keel. Also why it is not more popular to use lifting keel rather than daggerboard which can break and kinda unsafe where lifting keel in case of impact just lifts!
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the Comment MT! The Portofino 47 has the fixed aluminium keels as the owner was not concerned about performance and wanted an "easy" boat. Our Portofino 52 has centreboards that rotate up and there are no "fixed keels" - like you say daggerboards that just slide up and down run the risk of breaking if you hit something. I think we may be saying the same thing. As to your question why is it not more popular to have lifting centreboards / keels - I DON"T KNOW! It should be - the advantages are so great - getting into shallow anchorages, reduced risk of collision damage, avoidance of storms, better nights sleep cause you can get out of the nasty swell etc. I think because lifting keels / centreboards are so rare, the general sailing population has not had the experience of them to know how amazing they are... When we changed from our shallow draft beachable 42 foot cat to the 1.5m draft Leopard 50, it felt like our wings were cut - suddenly we realised that the "general sailing population" were missing out HUGELY!!!

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 We had a lifting keel 30 years old sailing boat built in Finland. We used to hit something, but the keel was just lifting and there was never any damage. The idea is very sound, and I really like your choice; you have changed my mind. Shallow draft and beachable boat is a very important feature. Even in Sweden where we do not have tides, still I have beached our current small trimaran, and it is making life so easy. I wish you happy times in your new boat.

@deerfootnz 9 ай бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 forgive my jaded approach - 200,000 miles of cruising and deliveries...but I just don't see how a boat that heavy performs to those numbers. 18.5 tonnes is pretty heavy - it's the same weight as my 60 ft mono with full fuel and water on board. It's substantially heavier than comparable cats, though I am very suspicious regarding the advertised displacement of most of those. Possibly your builder/designer is using real displacement as opposed to pure fantasy which many builders are prone to. It's interesting that in the real world very few cats exceed our performance on a passage. I am not anti-multihull and like many performance multis, I just think they are harder to sail fast than is generally acknowledged as its much more risky to push it....I certainly am much more conservative when delivering someone else's cat, especially beam reaching......
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 9 ай бұрын
@@deerfootnz Yes beam reaching is both the most uncomfortable and risky angle for cats so we always try to head up to about 70* or down to about 110* for comfort if possible. The reality is that above 12 knots the ride through the water starts to become rough and noisy so in the interests of a "nice" trip fast cats (except the longer ones) will slow down to the pleasant speeds. A 60 foot mono will have hull speed of almost 11 knots so you are not far under that 12 knot speed and for us with the 42 foot cat, we found the monos in a rally we did across Indonesia burnt a lot more fuel cause they went too slow in light winds. But yes, mono will often get across the long crossing not that far behind. We really want to be able to sail at 10 -14 knots easily and have no interest of doing 18-20 as that is too exciting and we are past that stage of our our lives - we want it easy, comfortable and reasonably fast... We all will be very interested to see the actual speeds the boat does when it is launched at Xmas next year!

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 so for a comparison I sailed from Hobart to Fiji in July, about 2550 logged miles in 12 days 15 hours. The last five days were in 10 knot average true wind. I motored for the first four hours out of Hobart and for another four hours total on the trip. I have no code zero or other light wind sails, or even an overlapping Genoa, just a high clewed non overlapping jib. A code zero would have made a big difference.
