Mark, the trash fish are usually close to the bottom. Using a split shot depends on the water depth. Less than 6' deep I do not use a spilt shot. The shrimp will most often try to swim away or down except when being attacked. That's when you see the shrimp jumping around. 10- 20 feet deep I use a 4 ' - 5' leader and a split shot about the half way mark.

Live shrimp on 1/4 oz split shot about a foot above the hook or 15 inches for good mojo. I like circle and treble hooks. Catch a ton of fish on this setup wade fishing. Another good one is live line a croaker on khale hooks. Works great when the wind is off. On windy days tie a chatter weight, with the option of a small egg sinker above the chatter weight, about 2 feet from the croaker.

Great video Mark. From my experience for years, since I first started, that has been my main set up with that split shot. If you think about it, that distance between the weight and the hook, place enough distance between the two not only to help weight the line down but also plenty distance from the hook for the shrimp or whatever live bait to move freely still. I use about 4 foot leader and then 2 foot from split shot weight to hook. You can plan from there, of course depending on depth of water you are in.

The way pa taught me was always to use a split shot so the shrimp doesnt swim at the top of the water . so thats the way i have always done it . to each its own though

I have used both with and without. Current is my main driver on using split shot. With the shrimp leaping out of the water is there natural reaction to a predator.

Mark where you are fish at, the other way I like to fish is with a 2' leader tied to a swivel. Above the swivel use a barrel weight. Fish with either a lot of slack or bail open. The idea is give the shrimp / croaker room to swim around.

I read that it's best to hook the live shrimp under the horn in between the brain and eyes. Hooking it through the brain makes it die faster. 🦐

So I use a split shot about 6in or so above the hook but that varies on the depth your fishing for example when I'm fishing Highland bayou there is a oyster flat that's only about three feet or so.I won't use a split shot then and in this particular spot I've actually had redfish hit the cork cork when you're fishing a little deeper say 3 ft split shot is needed if you're having problem's where the shrimp is up at the top of the water

Try not using a fixed setup, we used a trout leader using a regular cork to adjust the depth of the shrimp. Hopefully it might help we used to catch some gator trout in west bay that way.
