Part one of our two part documentary, of our overland snowmobile adventure trip from Northern BC to Dawson city Canada
We love going on snowmobile adventure trips as a family. With our 10 year old son and our dog in tow.
On this snowmobile adventure, we are going from Northern BC to the Central Yukon, in Canada.
This documentary will follow us on a 935 km snowmobile expedition, That will take us to Dawson city Yukon. Leaving from our home in northern BC we are using lakes, rivers, historic routes, the yukon quest trail and the trans canada trail, to arrive Dawson city in Central Yukon. It’s a journey that turns into a test of our mental strength as we overcome obstacles and challenges on a continuous basis, without even considering the remoteness and extreme weather.
It’s not the first time for us to do such an adventure trip. When we first met, we did a similar trip on Snowshoes, from home to Carmacks, that took us 21 days, whereas this time, by snowmobile it will, or it should, take less time to get there.
Philippe has also done this journey with a dog team all the Way to Dawson city. So we have somewhat of an idea of what we are getting ourselves into. But conditions always change. and while we know this, we are definitely going to find that out just how much this is true, during this trip.
The first historic trail we are using is the Mail run trail. This trail was used during the gold rush, to deliver mail between the communities of atlin BC and Carcross Yukon by dogsled. From 1975 to 2005 commemorative mail runs were held by dog sled. In order to organize these commemorative mail runs, Bill Thomson, the organizer, was sworn in as a mail carrier. This way, during these commemorative mail runs, dog mushers could each carry a bag of stamped mail that they would deliver at the post office upon their arrival in the community.
The first commemorative mail run, 14 teams took part, some teams got lost, and some had to turn around, but when they came to moose arm on Tagish lake, there was a trapline trail to Atlin lake, which is the trail we are about to take.
We start preparing for departure at our off the grid home.
The first days of this snowmobile adventure trip are smooth sailing. We traverse the southern lake, use the historic Mail run route between Atlin lake and Tagish lake, continue on towards Carcross Yukon, from where we use the White pass railroad tracks, the Trans Canada trail and the Dawson overland trail to make progress toward Braeburn, where we are supposed to refuel.
The bumpy trails around Whitehorse cause our toboggans to break apart, we have to fix the Scooby mobile, and Leandra's toboggan. The mornings are cold but the days are sunny and beautiful.
When we get to Braeburn, there is no fuel available.
What do we do now? We calcluate that we probably have enough to make it to carmacks if ll goes well. but soon on the next day we start encountering major overflow. will we make it? Find out in the next episode of this crazy family snowmobile adventure trip.
OVERFLOW IS THE WATER THAT POOLS UP OVER THE ICE THAT’S BEEN PUSHED DOWN BY THE WEIGHT OF SNOW.

What a great adventure. We have done the Atlin to Dawson trip for years but on four wheels. Bumpy trails? Moguls are so bad on our mountain trails that we often must go at a snail's pace. No gas at Braeburn at the time? But there are or used to be cinnamon buns. We always stopped there on our yearly trips to the Dempster. We would love to return, but it is a long way, and we are getting tired.

Hey Dave! It’s a beautiful trip by road also. Yep, There are still giant cinnamon buns at Braeburn, but the place has slowly changed over the last 15 years and the service is not so friendly anymore. But hey, one can always just stop in to pick up a cinnamon bun and keep going! Hope you are well, happy new year!

This is a lot of work. I have been hot tenting for 40 years. We also winter camp and ice fish with snow mobiles. We have a number of wall tents but in the last five years have started to use lighter tent setup for winter camping. It is a tent I modified, it is like a tent within a tent some what like an" Artic Oven" tent. It is much lighter to transport( no steel tent poles) and takes less room in the trailboggan's . Neat trip but a lot of work have fun and always adventure.

Interesting. Yes, after a long and hard day out, it was an extra challenge for the backs to set up the tent and do firewood. We are seriously thinking about lightening our loads, and the tent is the first thing on the list. We have been eyeing the Esker tents, 13kg for a 12x12 and still breathable canvas to dry stuff out, that sounds amazing. Maybe we will bite the bullet on one later this summer. We are already thinking up a bigger trip for next year 😅

Have a 24 Expedition on order so good to see how capable the 20” skandic was in that overflow/slush. For your hot tent query, I use a Snowtrekker myself and they come larger to fit your crew.
@TheBrientFamily
@TheBrientFamily Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tent recommendation, we will look into the Snowtrekker! Our Skandic is actually a Super wide (24”). The Tundra did not do good on the overflow, we even nicknamed it the ‘overflow magnet’. We are selling it. we will make a video about the reasons why. We ordered a 2024 Skandic wide track for Leandra. Cheers!

@@TheBrientFamily I went back and forth on the expy/skandic choice for the past year. For my region (southern MB/NW ON) the A arms won’t be a problem for where I go. Skandics are super capable machines.

@@TheBrientFamily I had a 600 ACE in a Tundra. Worst slush pig I've ever owned. Went to the 600r etec and would never go back to an ACE unless it was the 900 Turbo.

I really would love to know where you can get some orthos. Peppers woodstoves in your tent. I really would love to find one of those. But I lived in car cross in 2001 of those in our trailer and they worked really good.I would love to have it find another one
