Part one of our two part documentary, of our overland snowmobile adventure trip from Northern BC to Dawson city Canada
We love going on snowmobile adventure trips as a family. With our 10 year old son and our dog in tow.
On this snowmobile adventure, we are going from Northern BC to the Central Yukon, in Canada.
This documentary will follow us on a 935 km snowmobile expedition, That will take us to Dawson city Yukon. Leaving from our home in northern BC we are using lakes, rivers, historic routes, the yukon quest trail and the trans canada trail, to arrive Dawson city in Central Yukon. It’s a journey that turns into a test of our mental strength as we overcome obstacles and challenges on a continuous basis, without even considering the remoteness and extreme weather.
It’s not the first time for us to do such an adventure trip. When we first met, we did a similar trip on Snowshoes, from home to Carmacks, that took us 21 days, whereas this time, by snowmobile it will, or it should, take less time to get there.
Philippe has also done this journey with a dog team all the Way to Dawson city. So we have somewhat of an idea of what we are getting ourselves into. But conditions always change. and while we know this, we are definitely going to find that out just how much this is true, during this trip.
The first historic trail we are using is the Mail run trail. This trail was used during the gold rush, to deliver mail between the communities of atlin BC and Carcross Yukon by dogsled. From 1975 to 2005 commemorative mail runs were held by dog sled. In order to organize these commemorative mail runs, Bill Thomson, the organizer, was sworn in as a mail carrier. This way, during these commemorative mail runs, dog mushers could each carry a bag of stamped mail that they would deliver at the post office upon their arrival in the community.
The first commemorative mail run, 14 teams took part, some teams got lost, and some had to turn around, but when they came to moose arm on Tagish lake, there was a trapline trail to Atlin lake, which is the trail we are about to take.
We start preparing for departure at our off the grid home.
The first days of this snowmobile adventure trip are smooth sailing. We traverse the southern lake, use the historic Mail run route between Atlin lake and Tagish lake, continue on towards Carcross Yukon, from where we use the White pass railroad tracks, the Trans Canada trail and the Dawson overland trail to make progress toward Braeburn, where we are supposed to refuel.
The bumpy trails around Whitehorse cause our toboggans to break apart, we have to fix the Scooby mobile, and Leandra's toboggan. The mornings are cold but the days are sunny and beautiful.
When we get to Braeburn, there is no fuel available.
What do we do now? We calcluate that we probably have enough to make it to carmacks if ll goes well. but soon on the next day we start encountering major overflow. will we make it? Find out in the next episode of this crazy family snowmobile adventure trip.
OVERFLOW IS THE WATER THAT POOLS UP OVER THE ICE THAT’S BEEN PUSHED DOWN BY THE WEIGHT OF SNOW.
