From what I've read, the most probable cause is his frequent molting. They drop claws after they molt sometimes, it's something people who care for them in large, public aquariums expect. He's probably fairly young lobster, so it's normal for him to molt this often. Ironically, a dropped claw is a sign that he's growing normally and he's very healthy.

I can only speculate along with you, but I've owned several hermit crabs and freshwater crabs over the years. Dropped claws are common. If I had to take a guess, he might've gotten it stuck like you suggested, he might've gotten it stuck and unstuck but it was injured and he decided to drop the dead weight so to speak as he needs all the energy he can get for molting, it might've had an infection we can't see but he could detect, or the most simple answer: he dropped it because he could. It's not unheard of. There are instances of crabs and lobsters dropping their claws, especially pincher claws, on a whim. The theory is that the bigger the claw is, the more cumbersome it becomes when handling and ripping apart food so they start over. Regardless, Leon appears happy and healthy, that's the best sign!

4:45 As Leon flips the dropped claw around I can see an old injury to membrane between the claw to last knuckle joint that got infected and the infection had spread to the muscle as shown by that darkened patch on bottom of his claw shell. The injury might have been there all along and because of the infection, persisted through sheds. It may have been cause by many things but I highly doubt that the little jousting you did with him had anything to do with it. He was going to loose that claw from infection so his body disposed of it. When he sheds next you will probably see a tiny nub start to form a new claw. Check your redox potential (ORP) and keep it high during his recovery. I haven't found a video that covers what you have for a setup or what environmental parameters you are keeping track of. I do hope you keep his water temps as cool as he likes.

@@TigerSira I did google search it. I asked Q: “how long does it take for an adult lobster to completely grow a claw back” A: It can take several months for an adult lobster to fully regenerate a claw. The time it takes depends on the lobster's age and how quickly it's growing. A lobster that's young and growing quickly will regenerate its claw faster. It usually takes about five years for a lobster to regenerate a claw that's the same size as the one it lost.

I’m so glad that Leon seems okay. You did everything right; leaving the claw in the tank for a while, feeding him a good meal afterwards and checking him for signs of disease. lobsters can regenerate lost limbs, including arms, claws, and antennae. Regeneration time can take several months or even years for a lobster to fully regenerate a large limb, like a claw. For example, it can take about five years for a lobster to regenerate a claw that is the same size as the one it lost Don't give up - there's still tremendous hope! It'll just take time

Their relatives, freshwater crayfish, regenerate all lost limbs or lost claws during their next molt. Following this example, Leon should emerge from his next molt with a healthy new claw; but it probably will not be as large...takes a couple molts to get it back up to size. That being said, I have no doubt in my mind that his water quality is perfect, given Brady's experience and expertise. So I do not believe that stress from improper water conditions caused this. But Leon may have dropped a claw due to stress from another source, such as the crabs that live in his tank with him. Or he got it caught in the rocks trying to get to the crabs that live in his tank with him.
