My experience with the burnt toast theory: I ended up having a surprise day off from work, because a town-wide water shortage led to the school I work at being closed. My then-partner asked if I wanted to go for a drive with him, because he needed to go and buy some tools or something a couple of towns over. We got to the town, and he decided that he'd buy lunch first, because he was hungry. We were right across the road from the tool shop, and there was a bakery, so why not? I was waiting in the car for him to emerge, and just when he did, I heard what sounded like an explosion. It was the loudest noise I've ever heard, and it sounded like it was right next to me. I saw horror on my partner's face, and turned to see wheels, glass, and various car parts scattered across the road, and two wrecked cars. One person (allegedly possibly on drugs) had barrelled through at an insane speed and crashed into an old woman who was turning out of a supermarket. The old woman ended up dying on the scene. It was awful. The weird thing was that my partner told me he had been delayed leaving the bakery because the customer in front of him was having issues with their debit card. If it wasn't for those few extra seconds of delay, we would have probably been crossing the road at the exact moment those cars collided, and would have been mown down as a result. We would have been absolutely done for. Terrifying.
@demetriam240810 ай бұрын
Yeah, it might seem weird at first, but once you've been near those unfortunate situations you'll recognize the "that could have been me" feeling it's describing. Like that Malcolm in the Middle episode where a car passes them and then gets annihilated. The coincidences of the world are shocking.

40:00 As much as I understand the absurdism of having descriptions of imbedded tweets, I’m sure that these are visual descriptions for people that have visual impairments (aka having the article read to them by a text to speech tool), as is becoming common in a lot of places these days! It’s important that these kinds of things are added so all kinds of people can engage with content that otherwise would be less accessible to them, or inaccessible completely. Besides, this also helps keep the context of the posts in these articles even if those tweets became somehow unreachable.

The ambulance bill accounted for almost 50% of their entire hospital bill. Absolutely fuckin absurd. The average bill for an ambulance ride for someone who is uninsured (at least in 2020) was between $900 and $1300 depending on the level of care you get in the ambulance. Even WITH insurance the average charge is $500. Those prices in the grand scheme don’t seem like enough to put someone in debt, but something like 50% of Americans don’t have any emergency savings and $500 is a lot of money to make magically appear from nowhere. Honestly though, all the stories i hear of people transitioning are of people in an environment that they're *coming into* as their true identity and that's just so rarely the case. I started transitioning (socially) when i was thirteen, and was in school until i was 17. It's a whole f*ing ball game to transition in front of all of these people who already have a fully formed notion of who they think you are. It's draining to consistently deal with people who make a thing of it; they'll at the smallest level, act weird toward you- at the most extreme, but not uncommon level, harrass or assault you. But even just dealing with the looks, the offhand comments and questions, it's exhausting

As someone who was once addicted to gamified gambling, I appreciate the line you drew against gambling ads. Any game with a gambling component, even some gacha games, have the possibility of promoting gambling. It takes a lot of personal accountability to avoid these games, of course, but it certainly doesn't help if a trusted content creator promotes a gambling game. The gamification of these gambling apps is very sinister. They are essentially promoting addiction by making it seem easy to get money. It took a lot of time and a lot of lost money for me to only spend a set amount of money on apps for the purpose of entertainment, not because I felt like I had to.

The Roman fire brigade under Crassus (Mega rich guy) would literally go around putting out people's house fires ONLY if they allowed him to buy the property first. If you let him buy your house he'd put out the fire, but if you refused, he'd simply walk away with the fire brigade. So in a sense, 'Big Fire' really did exist.

At 44:57 there's a reference to "Philistine" as an insult. I would like to suggest another term as this one is demeaning towards the Palestinian people, who are in fact overarchingly better educated on average than those in many other countries, and who do have a strong affinity for & education in the arts and culture. I understand that the term "Philistine" is something we've used for many years and not with any negative intention, but when we know better we do better... and I really hope/believe that it wasn't used to intentionally mock or insult a population that's being actively ethnically cleansed and is experiencing a genocide. Thanks! And #FreePalestine.

Hearing about the guy who never misses his flights, but missed it that day made me think about something that happened when I was a kid. A week before the Oklahoma City bombing, my 4th grade class went to the Murrah building (the building that was bombed) on a field trip and the day of the bombing, the seniors were supposed to be there for their field trip, but the bus broke down and they couldn't leave. Everyone called it a miracle, hand of God, blah blah blah. It was definitely pretty traumatic for our little brains though thinking about how we had just been there.

I won't defend NBC including that random alien tweet but I can say that yes, online news sources do feel like they have to include images in every story. It's all about clickthrough rates tbh, people will click on articles with pics WAY more than those without. From a journalist's perspective, I'm guessing that article had multiple memes just because it was a pretty unserious topic and related to online conversations but it does feel kind weird to do that. Also that "LOL" response from the police is golden, I'm glad they put that in the headline. One time a fire dept. release in my town explained they canceled a call because "... twas just a candle" and I've never been more devastated that it wasn't newsworthy enough to use that quote somewhere.

The guy stuck in a vase reminds me a lot of my cousin.I have nothing but love for him, but he would absolutely get stuck in a vase. We used to all go on vacation in the same house, and there was this one tiny plastic baby seat there that had no flexibility at all. Three years in a row, my cousin (eight to ten) decided to get into it, got stuck, and then spent a lot of time trying to get out while we unhelpfully tried to help. I think he had a growth spurt at eleven and couldn’t get into it, and that stopped him repeating that act. Fun fact, at one point the princess of Norway knew this story. She went to my school for a few years, and I wrote about this story for class and then read it out loud.

On the point of Boeing focusing on automation, it is actually the opposite. Airbus emphasizes automation and protection against stalling and excessive speeding. Boeing focuses on pilot control features and training rather than automation. Although, it’s important to remember that all pilots are well trained and planes and airlines have very high safety standards

as someone who is extremely phobic of cars the statistics have made my fear significantly worse, Id trust a pilot more only because there is less room for error on a plane. I'm still terrified of flying tho
@Terrestriellie10 ай бұрын
I'm sure this has been said and articulated better, but the other thing is even with the plane that set on fire and the plane door flying out, there were no fatalities - so I'm sure your chance of getting into a plane accident might be a little higher potentially but even then they seem significantly less higher to be fatal than cars
