Taste of Trini

Күн бұрын

This delicious appetizer and one of the most loved Trini street foods is also a popular Divali dish. Since Divali is around the corner, i thought I would share this recipe with you all!
There are 2 ways to make this. This way uses the chopped up spinach and the other way is made by rolling the spinach and slicing them into circles.
Saheena is a spinach (dasheen bush/taro leaves) fritter made with a split pea and flour batter and eaten with your choice of chutney. I prefer mango chutney but you can have it with tamarind chutney as well.
Try this recipe and you'll be making it many many times again in the future!
The recipe is my personal recipe that was developed after lots of trial and error and lots of wasted ingredients 😂
Ingredients:
8 Dasheen bush/spinach/taro leaves
2 cups flour
1 cup split peas powder
1 lime
2 tsp yeast
1/2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp roasted ground cumin / Geera
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 cup green seasoning
1 1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tbsp baking powder
1 cup of water
Oil to fry
Tamarind Chutney : • Sweet and Savory Tamar...

This is such a detailed video. I did not cook much when I lived in Trinidad, so I did not know about washing the leaves with lime juice. Thanks for that tip. You made it look so easy. I am in Toronto. Maybe I could see if I could buy the leaves here. It is not as difficult as I thought it would be. I will definitely try to make it.

I make a similar snack to this using spinach and potatoes. I adapted it from an old Madhur Jaffrey pakoora recipe. I use gram flour (besan) and a very similar spice mix to your recipe. They make a super snack with some hot pepper sauce or a sweet and sour tamarind dipping sauce. The most popular pakoora in the UK are called 'onion bhajis' - which are really onion pakoora. If I can find some dasheen, I will give this recipe a try.

Nice, well done. In Fiji this is known as Bhajia. Sahena in Fiji is where you roll full taro leaves with besan mix inside them, steam the whole roll which gets cut up for deep frying.
