Petrol and Diesel powered cars are set to be banned from sale in the UK from 2030, what will this mean for the future? How long will combustion powered cars be allowed to continue to use the roads? As enthusiasts, what will this mean for us? So many questions as the world shifts to zero emission electric cars. Will the value of petrol cars go up? Or will they eventually be legislated against?
Given that this is such a huge change to the car industry, I had to voice my concerns going forwards from here. Is the automotive heyday drawing to a close, or will we still have plenty to be excited about?
This is an open discussion about the future from here, as well as a chance to take the Peugeot 205 XS out for yet another drive!
Please share your thoughts.

I don't want the government tracking me everywhere. I don't speed but I like to have fun when driving. Cornering speed and the way a car handles is what I enjoy most. I have just picked up a mk4 golf gti 180 and I'm loving it while I still can.

The tracking is a real concern, I hope we can continue to enjoy our freedom and our cars! Thanks for watching.

Such an exciting and simultaneously frightening subject, and I think we could discuss this for hours! There are so many aspects, concepts and feelings involved in this that my head feels like it's going to explode, so it's very difficult to communicate through a short comment on a video. You do make a lot of great points and ask valid questions, and i too really hope that there will be some way of keeping classic cars on the road. I'm not sure banning combustion cars is the right move, not yet at least, since the technology is still moving forward, and other aspects could be investigated too - synthetic fuel? Plus, i don't think the foundation for electric cars is ready yet. The manufacturing process for batteries is still hard on the environment, and relies on relatively large amounts of very rare materials such as lithium, and child labour is being used a lot sadly. As you mention, the infrastructure is another question. Personally i think hydrogen is a more future friendly way to go, but there is a long way to go still. Ultimately the car manufacturers won't take the challenge on by them selves, they don't want to spend the money - they need to be pushed by demands and regulations, so it's a difficult subject. Good point too, that EV-buyers today want to feel that they are getting something futuristic, but as i mentioned on your last video, i really hope there will be a market for cars purely focused on driving involvement and feel.. It won't be the same, but it could be good. Ugh, there is so so much more to this, i feel like i - and you - have just skimmed the surface.

Exactly. There are so many layers to this. I do feel that we (as a populace) should be buying zero emission cars not because we are forced to, but because they are the better choice going forward. Also, being zero emission really should involve more than just what comes out of the exhaust pipe. When governments focus on one area in specific surrounding emissions, we are likely to open up a can of worms in other areas, like you have mentioned. We only need to look at the diesel scandal to see how a singular focus on Co2 emissions ended up.....I'm worried about our freedom to drive in general. The car for me represents a freedom, a freedom to travel. Thanks for your support as ever!

We need to stand en masse and say no if they try to ban combustion engines from the road and track us per mile. I cannot see a ban happening as there is no way they will be able to get the infrastructure in place to go 100% electric, plus all the other engines that create massive levels of pollution such as trains, buses, ships, factories, other countries etc.... From an owner of youngest car at 20 years old, oldest 35 🙂

Very good points, especially about other forms of transport! Hopefully we can continue to enjoy our combustion engines for a good while yet! Sounds like you have a nice stable too!

You re not talking about watches but the thing is a bit the same for me. Apple watches provides you great precision but the idea of a machanical thing canot be matched.

I get more excited over a small warmish hatch like a VW UP GTi or Kia Picanto GT than a large car with 300+ horsepower a flappy paddle gearbox and these horrible popping exhausts. I also lament not holding onto my 205 GTi and my late father-in-law's 205 XS because I never knew cars were going to become so bloated, overpowered and lifeless to drive as most of them are now. All your points are well made but we are up against governments who want to appear green and ignore obvious issues like where EV components are sourced and their environmental/social impact. Grid capacity will have to be seriously enhanced to cope with the additional load especially if we also have to replace our gas boilers with heat-pumps. Vehicle to Grid will not cut it as the added charge-discharge cycles will most likely reduce battery life. Therefore, I have resigned myself to eventually buying an EV when I am forced to as long as it has a range of at least 200 miles and fits into my small garage as well as my current car, a 2018 Twingo GT which is somewhere between the 205 XS and GTi in performance and really enjoyable to drive. Otherwise, I will give up driving and use Johnny Cab which will be a reality by then.

I always thought the Twingo looked great fun, as you say, a bit like a modern interpretation of the hot hatches of old. Cars have grown so much over the years, but the back roads haven't!

I was thinking exactly about this the other day! Unfortunately I feel us petrol heads are already demonised as I drive around in my high revving NA Hondas and see people look down their noses at us in their quiet mundane modern cars. It's just a sign of the times. On another note, I've spent much of this Saturday night watching and re-watching a lot of your videos since stumbling upon your channel a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it along with the brilliant 80's style music and great production quality! You've now earned yourself a new Subscriber so I truly hope you will continue to make more excellent content and you've now also made me want to rewatch the film Drive! ✌

I'm here because I really enjoy cars, petrol head I guess. I would also be very concerned about the way our planet is moving, mass extinction of the planets wildlife is happening, temperatures rising etc But I agree 100%. The narrative is being focused too much on private motorists and cars. Overall human consumerism is a HUGE issue, capitalist greed has driven us away from being able to buy products we can keep long term, that we can repair to a culture of buy and dispose and replace. That has to change . . . . we used to buy things that would last out we could repair . . .now things are just thrown out . . . And this enforced switch to electric cars is another example of buy and dispose culture. There are going to be absolutely enormous numbers of cars scrapped as a result of this shift to new electric cars . . .at a huge cost to the environment. Perfectly good cars. The manufacture of modern battery powered electric cars is also a problem for the environment, the mining from the Congo for example!! The recycling of these batteries is also a problem for the environment ( albeit one that is changing due to research and innovation). I think you'll end up with some kind of a licence in time to permit the use of your combustion engine classic car I believe, on a limited basis ( what will petrol cost tho!!) . . . .but I can see a societal move in time to where having one and using one becomes increasingly anti social, like smoking has become. Not that I'd let that stop me . . .

I too agree with your sentiments! Hopefully a good solution is found and those of us that adore cars, can continue to do so in a respectful way. I don't think I'll ever be able to turn off my passion, or my excitement upon hearing a traditional combustion engine...

i would embrace the elctric car happily as ruinning costs could be the same as my petrol. I have no access to a charger and wont for about the next 20 years until they build all 1 million of those needed.

I think its inevitable and that new Evs will be powerbanks for grid and there will be a place for ice cars rather than pence per mile ved will increase including evs . Its happening and with the big motor companies now saying investment is stopping in petrol and diesel engines with immediate effect that's it its done

I understand what your saying. The use of petrol and diesel cars will still continue after 2030. And, no doubt there will be many ICE drivers who will refuse to go electric. That’s OK, but remember that the more co2 we put in the atmosphere is going to effect not only the planet but our children’s children for years to come. I am a big fan of old vintage cars, and to go back further steam trains. But as an old man I see what is happening to our earth. I have driven motorcycles, and ICE cars for many years, but like the first Ford that came and took away the horse, we still love our horses. It doesn’t look as if they will be gone. I have owned 3 E Vs so far and it has been a eye opener, not just for the money I’ve saved, but the fun from the massive toque and the smoothness of its ride. BUT, and I mean this sincerely, I hope one day you will give it a try.

.. maybe it will be a good idea to start looking at hard cold numbers about pollution, things our beloved governments and media are happily ignoring, like true pollution number 1 offenders (and 2 and 3 etc) . Having "green" activists offended by me driving my weekend car for fun it's like being offended somebody is taking a piss in the Pacific while a 3 m diameter pipe is dumping crap 2 m next to him.. but hey, the low hanging fruit for politicians to get their votes is easy accessible, right? I worked for 20+ years in Logistics and all this "diesel bad" and "your Lambo is killing the planet" it's absolutely hilarious if it won't be actually sad.. I do want a clean planet, but let's address the elephant in the room (China and India industry, agriculture, steam ships etc) before coming down on the "bad" people driving a little car for fun. Absolutely ridiculous!
