This was the first novel I'd ever read. 1978 and I was only 10 years old. Found the book in a K-Mart and while my mom was doing her boring-ass shopping I read the prologue and was hooked. I asked my mom if she could buy it for me and that was that. It was during the summer so no school and I stayed awake all night with a crucifix around my neck and kept the curtains closed for months after. Vampires have never been as frightening as they were in King's novel. No movie ever came close.

My favorite King novel…scary, funny, great characters, interesting subplots, and perfectly established mood/tone and atmosphere,..his short story “One For the Road” in the Skeleton Crew anthology is basically a sequel to it, which reveals what the Lot is experiencing after the vampire plague takes over the town….excellent short story and epilogue to the novel….FYI, if you loved the atmosphere and suspense of Salem’s Lot, check it the F Paul Wilson horror/sci-fi/historical fiction novel, The Keep…it was made into a horrible film in the early 80s, but the novel ranks up there with I Am Legend and Salem’s Lot as the best vampire novels of modern fiction, although the vampire premise is mote supernatural in scope…it’s basically a book about a regimen of Nazis occulting an ancient Keep/castle in the Romanian mountains, during WW2, and using it as a base to begin exterminating the Romanian Jews and Gypsies in the region, but their plans are interrupted by the presence of an ancient evil that occupies the castle (imprisoned?), and begins picking off the Nazi soldiers one by one, leading an anti-Nazi German commander to employ an elderly Jewish man and his young adult daughter to figure out what is murdering his men, and why…all while a third figure is traveling to the Keep to finish what he started long ago, and do battle with the malevolent force inside the Keep….its an engrossing book, and easy read that, along with Salem’s Lot, is my favorite pure horror novel….and if you like The Keep, check out Wilson’s other novels, The Tomb, Black Wind (another WW2 historical fiction setting about the Japanese attempting to use a mystical power to destroy the US before we can drop the atom bomb and end the war, and all of the character dramas that feed the narrative)….he also has a series of horror books called the Repairman Jack series, about a guy who fixes things for people facing supernatural threats….

I'm with you on that. That book was made for a TV series, not just a movie, even a lengthy one. The book has too many characters, too many details, and too many important and/or interesting plotlines to be compressed into only one movie. I mean, [SPOILER ALERT] who does not want to see Reggie Sawyer catching his wife, Bonnie Sawyer, and Corey Bryant in the act, and him making Corey brown his pants or something that was once Corey coming back for Bonnie and Reggie Sawyer? Who does not want to see a baby vampire finally making its parents happy together? Who wouldn't love to see more of Tom and Marjorie Glick's couple dynamic, or Bill and Ann Norton's, or that darkly beautiful moment between Eva Miller and Craig Weasel in her boarding house? Who does not want to see a naked Glynis Mayberry paying a visit to her old-time friend Mabel Werts? Or Barlow busting into the Petrie's residence uninvited?

Spoilers: Everyone saying how amazing the 70’s movie is needs to take off the nostalgia goggles and watch it again. I hadn’t seen it in over 20 years so I rewatched it few nights ago. It’s okay, but not great. I remember it scaring the hell out of me when I was a kid, but It left out too many important scenes from the book and added a ton of filler. I thought the 2004 TNT version was better, but it also left out other scenes from the book while adding more filler. I did like how it explored the nature of evil and the attraction of evil to evil. I’m rereading the book again for the first time in 30 years, so I’m catching a lot of things I missed when I first watched the 70’s and 04 movies. This new one looks to change a ton of stuff, but I’m not complaining. It looks like Susan is with Ben and Cody in the morgue when Margarie wakes up, and again in the Marsten house with the rest of the crew. I always thought her decision to go into the house alone was one of King’s worst writing decisions. It just didn’t make sense with what we had seen from the character so far. She was skeptical, but she was also smart, or appeared to be, and wouldn’t walk into a house with two deranged killers (which she thought Straker and Barlow to be) with Mark as her backup. Her becoming a vampire at that point in the story just felt forced to me, and hopefully this new movie handles it differently. I just hope the movie doesn’t suck. This is one of my favorite stories. King said the movies is great, so hopefully he’s not just blowing smoke up our asses.

There is a short story by Stephen King called Jerusalem's Lot (published along with other stories in 1978), and from this story he wrote the book Salem's Lot that inspires the 1979 miniseries and the current movie. The curious thing is that the story was published after the book.

Watching this reminded me so much of "From".....and watching "From" was so Stephen King-esque I thought it was one of his book adaptations. Looking forward to S3 "From" and now Salem's Lot. It's uncanny how familiar they are to one another.

I fondly recall the original scaring the crap out of me in the 1970s. Nice reboot - some tweaks, some call-backs to the original, pleasantly surprised at some new twists. This is what a Halloween movie should be: fun and scary. Ignore the reviewers and watch.

Surprised they're doing this so soon after the Adrien Brody miniseries version on Epix called Chapelwaite, which was excellent.

I remember seeing the original film in middleschool. That one jumpscare in the jailhouse scared the shit outta me😂 This remake looks pretty decent.

Damn I like this better than the original, but still it doesn’t beat the original window scene!

Don't know why Hollywood keeps making remakes of films that were already great...Why don't they remake films that were bad and make them better?.... No imagination....'70's were the golden age of movies...now we just get superhero movies...
