Yes I lived ABROAD. I am Brazilian and in 2020 I moved to Ireland, with the intention of doing an 8-month exchange, I had a job and I took English classes. During the months I was in Ireland, the desire to take Italian citizenship ignited in me (because my grandparents are Italians), and when I finished my exchange in Ireland I simply moved to Italy to get citizenship and stayed there for 4 months. Today I returned to Brazil to finish my graduation, but I fell in love with the experience of immersing myself in a new culture. It was, for me, the best experience of my life. Everything was useful as learning, especially the problems I went through

I had similar experiences when I was living in Costa Rica. I don't think there's enough space in this posting for me to mention everything that I'd like to, so, I'll just highlight a couple things. (I also lived in Spain for almost a year, but I was living with Cubans, so, the Castilian Spanish never ever rubbed off on me). My 1st time in CR was when I was an exchange student with Penn State Univ. I was placed with a family and I was treated as if I were one of the siblings for real. That touched my heart, especially since I was an only child and always wanted to have brothers and sisters. When the semester was over I returned home and went back to CR every year for at least a month during my vacations. All my long term relationships were from there, which I adored. The original siblings (from CR) got married and called me Uncle Lenny whenever I visited (Tío Lenny). Fast forward a few decades, they told me that they thought I was their uncle for real, which touched my heart like you won't believe. I'm sure you have many people with whom you can practice your Spanish (which is very good). If you'd ever like to practice with me, hey, I'd be honored. I guess the best way would either be via Zoom or the What's App app on our Smart phones. Hopefully this message gets to you. ¡Dios lo bendiga y muchas gracias por dedicar tanto de su tiempo a comunicarse con nosotros! Hasta muy pronto si Dios quiere. Chao.

Living in Japan was one of the best experiences I ever had. Like you, I was ready for a new chapter, excited about the unknown and ready to find myself. Growing up on an island limits us to what we can do and experience. But moving to Tokyo and living in a giant city, not able to speak their language and living with people I never met before only excited my soul more. It helped that my roommates were Peter Pan (Eric from Florida) and Aladdin (Joe from New York)! I was 22 when I moved to Japan and was fortunate enough to see a lot of Asia in the 6 years. It’s like I’m looking back into time as I watch you experience life. Thank you for always being so positive and real. Never lose that. Letting people see the true you will never leave them guessing who you truly are! Love from the Aloha State! 😊

I thought the Spanish I had taken in high school and then college sufficient but it wasn't. At first barely understood the family and could only say a few words. Somehow I got around, made some friends, although I was in the closet, went to a Gay bar, and met a few guys. My hair was dirty blond and they called me "Guero" which is rubio. I think I learned that I really appreciated living in the USA. I also learned how kind and helpful the Mexican people are I do wish I could of stayed for 1year or 2 like you ..Nos Vemos.

Sam, I lived in Florida for 34 years. In grade school, we had a choice to join the Cuban community coming to Florida and be educated bilingually, or to stay strictly American. I chose the immersion route, my brother chose the latter. That was a very good thing. But like you, the older I got and the drunker I stayed, life was a downer. In 2002, I jumped the border to Canada. I was sober. Have been 18 years now. Let me tell you, I went through 2 years of culture shock. I had to choose where my loyalties lay. I chose Canada. Both locales are different and offered different ways of life. I met my now husband here, and I also learned how to love, because when I jumped the border, I had to decide that i was ready to Grow the Fuck Up and become a man. That took a lot of sober work. You make sound points. The farther from home we travel we learn just what is important through the eyes of those we encounter. You have that. Gratitude !!

I was learning things about how the people we were always around live, got to see some amazing things, was taught some Spanish everyday and it was such a wonderful experience! Also, I was really impressed that since the last time I was at our resort, they completely stopped using plastic water bottles!! In each room there is a glass pitcher and glasses and then there are water coolers all over for you to refill those pitchers, as well as your water bottles! It's crazy how much plastic that saved! Cannot wait to see more of the world! PS - come to Canada and visit me in the Canadian Prairies! Just do it in the summer when all the trees are lush and it's hot as Mexico out! XD Cheers!!

Now well into my fourth year here in Spain. In my 20s (hight of AIDS) decided to learn Spanish which led to a degree and two years in Spain. Then a doctorate which allowed me to spend 6 months in Peru. Thereafter I got a "proper" job with the government which had it’s good times and bad times. Following a very bad six months I decided a change was need so headed to Chile to do a TEFL course and then into Argentina (Cordoba in the middle of the country) where I got off a bus on a Tuesday morning have travelled over the Andes with just a bag knowing no one. Y ¡madre mia! los mejores 9 meses de mi vida. Amo Argentina. Got back to the UK and HM Gov and it just didn't work so after nearly 2 years up sticks and headed to Spain where I had also had a great time in my 20s. The second part of this journey was done when I had already passed 50. And we Brits are also hung up on punctuality. I once had to drop off paper work at my school and got stuck in Friday rush hour and rushed in 10 minutes late and when I said I was sorry for being late the response was rolled eyes. In Cordoba they thing Porteños are uptight¡ Suerte guapo

Every country has its amazing attributes. I have gotten the opportunity to visit the U.S for 2 wks around christmas as a young teenager, i got to experience my first snow around christmas which was an awesome feeling. The walks felt like nothing and i could walk blocks and blocks without feeling anything because the weather/change in atmosphere as a foreigner was so different you dont pay attention to it much. I never got to eat out as we always had home cooked food (love you aunty)❤😚. The buildings were huge and so tall and love the fact that they seperated their garbage arrangements. I visted magarita in venezuela a few times with family, its such a beautiful country with rich culture and people even though the situation with development and access to certain resources and their currency exchange rate being so low due to conflict between leaders and its economy its sad and i feel for the people.🙏. Its such a beautiful country. I would even love to be bilingual so I can communicate with people whenever i revisit becausr my grandmom grand father and dad were from venezuela

Great video Sam. We never really know just how good we have it until we visit other countries. Not that other countries are better or worse, though some are. But as an American, I think it offers us a greater appreciation of what it is to be free in a truly diverse country. We have one of the highest standards of living in the world and yet we seem to waste so much as a disposable society. Yet with the advent of the internet and cell phones, I get the sense that we are becoming more insular. We talk through phones and computer screens, yet in the process, we miss the true interaction people used to have when meeting face to face. My Great Grandfather was a second cousin to Porfirio Diaz who was president of Mexico which I have visited often. A beautiful country as well as its people, but as Dorothy once said, " Auntie Em, there's no place like home." Just some rambling thoughts Sam....:)

Fortunately I made 4 of them. Each move was amazingly rewarding, professionally and personally. One thing that was on my list, and I have yet to complete - learn Spanish. Let's see if this old dog can learn new tricks. Sam this is a tremendous video. I am curious how your family felt with you so far away. It’s kinda funny that you’re saying a lot of these things ‘cause being born and raised in Hawai’i...I’ve been constantly reminded by mainland people and mainland friends, how different life in Hawai’i is from the rest of the country. Like most Latin countries, we’re extremely familial here, so much so that your friends parents are your “aunties” and “uncles”. We open our homes to total strangers, and we trust people unlike anywhere you’ll find in the continental states. We’re also very lax about racial things...and I’ve been criticized heavily for saying things like “a white guy cut me off the other day”. My mainland friends would tell me stuff like, “he didn’t cut you off ‘cause he’s White!” to which I would reply, “I never said that’s why he cut me off, it’s just a descriptor in my telling of the story!” Also, because we’re such a mixed up state, when people say that they’re “cultured” here...it doesn’t mean that they go to operas, plays, museums, etc. They mean that they know about various cultures and traditions. Lastly, only 2.7% of Americans are mixed race...with Alaska being 2nd most with 7.4% and Oklahoma being 3rd with 6.1%. Hawai’i? 23.8% of our population is mixed race! I think that’s why we look so different here, and it’s hard to tell what people are...for example, I’m supposedly pure Japanese, but I sure don’t look like my Japanese counterparts from Japan. I don’t know if you read these comments, but have you ever been to Hawai’i?

@Yu Ka What's so confusing about what I said? I thought I was very clear, but I would love to hear your explanation. 😘 If you’re referring to my response to Jayden, he said that he realized that Hawai’i people have no concept of time...and since time is typically perceived in a linear fashion, the antithesis of that would be non-linear...which, in theory, could suggest that we don’t age in the same linear manner in which everyone else ages. As a result, someone like me, who’s almost 50 years old...still looks pretty young. Hope that helps. 😘

Hola Sam !! ¿Cómo estas? .

I'm not sure I would refer to those countries as third world as they both have amenities for those who can afford them. But compared to some African nations, they are doing pretty well and will continue to improve over time. Traveling in the US and abroad is so educational and rewarding and it really shows in a person when they have been to a few places and then some. Thanks for the video and hope it inspires some viewers to take a trip in the near future.

@N K Oh, "sop being" haha that's just me, trying to put together a coherent sentence while painting my nails, holding a spliff and a glass of Chardonnay at the same time. It's a talent ok? *now it's fixed for you

I visited the UK back 89/90, but I always wanted to visit the U.S. I had that opportunity last year, flying from Auckland to Chicago on Air New Zealand and train to San Francisco on the California Zephyr.

Sam, your video chats are so authentic; indeed shared some similar experiences as part of a student exchange program in Deutschland. It was a home & home exchange, so we stayed with students that had stayed with us in the US. It was a fantastic experience to learn how our nation is viewed by another people & to be seeing the US from a different vantage point. A totally different perspective emerged. I found myself wanting to become more "German" especially after encountering US tourists & how rude & uneducated they were about the world & the country they were visiting as guests. Also found living relatives with whom there had been no contact since 1848 when my mom's family emigrated. That was an incredible experience, as they were an ancestry going back to the city founding in 782CE. My favorite joke they all told was what is the shortest book in the world...U.S. history...lol. Would love to share more with you sometime.

I lived in New Zealand for a year. definitely one of my best decisions. I must admit, though, if I knew then what I know now, I would've traveled the world sooner.

sam, nice guns. you are right about the relaxed vibe in South America. But I was in West Europe and they're not relaxed. They are eco-friendly because they have to (ie. the cost of gas is 4x what it is here, so cars are small).

Sam is very sweet and flirty, I can’t 😂haha. I’ve noticed that he’s very facially expressive too.

Yeah I've heard that straight men are not the expressive. All I heard from my family "stop throwing your arms up, stop doing that with your eyes. Stop wearing my stillettos, Stop wearing my makeup."

I had the same dream to go and live abroad and really have the chance to learn another language and immerse in another culture. I worked to find a job in a company where that possibility would exist to make the transition easier. Finally, I got the chance that I had dreamed of to go and manage a project in Brazil for 3 months. Well, 3 months ended up turning into 12 years (5 years in Sao Paulo and then 7 years in Rio de Janeiro). It was the best experience of my life and I still go back to Brazil to see all of my friends every year. The experience completely changed my outlook and they way that approach life in many aspects. I do love being back in Chicago because I love this city but I think I will eventually end up living abroad again in my lifetime.

Hola Sam, I did the Peace Corps "thing" about 50 years ago.....the re-entry is still happening every time I go to the grocery store or Wal-Mart.....why so much choice!!!! My return was from Bogota to New York City: WOW! Having studied and failed at the piano for 5 years.....I really enjoy your segments with your music. Nice fingering as my teacher used to say!!! Keep up the culture comment pieces...I am reliving mine as you jog my memory! I still cannot get over that Colombians did not enjoy ice cream cones...at least in the late 1960s. Or dessert for that matter! Pues, eso es!!! Si la Virgen quiere! Hasta pronto!

The lady at a museum in Colombia literally greeted me Kunichiwa. There is no political correctness in South America. I certainly hope to move abroad when I retire 40 years from now, possibly to the Philippines. My social security check will easily put me in the top 1% there lol.
