@sookendestroy13 жыл бұрын
I always found the evil cortana thing kind of cringe but if you pay attention to how she acts and speaks in 4 and 5 you realize that shes acting human. The problem however is that her human brain in this case is halseys and halsey has an inate need to preserve and advance humanity no matter the cost in often fairly evil ways. In 4 she plays recordings of halsey, quotes conversations she'd had with her, but in 5 she is her, even calling the 2s "her" spartans but now with a vengeance towards her other self. When you look at cortana in 5 its obvious that same bit of her brain is active but without the safeguards and without the tiny bit of restraint that halsey ultimately has. Most people see the cortana thing as just ai becoming evil but what most take as the side plot with a conflict between cortana and halsey might actually be the main event, especially since halsey has been in every 343 game so far, unless 343 really pulled a full 180 the finale of the halsey trilogy might be quite impressive.

Wow this is an awesome explanation

Cortana is still acting in accordance to Halsey's pro-humanity agenda, preserving them as a species. However, whereas Halsey would want humanity to be the author of it's own fate, Evil(!)Cortana would act as the overbearing parent to a childlike species. Which makes sense, for several reasons: 1.) AI were created to manage and protect humanity, granted more and more authority 2.) She had been infected by the Flood logic plague 3.) The Forerunner Organon likely did it's best to cure Cortana, but this was a single broken fragment on the Mantle's Approach

I have always thought that Rampancy is the result of Smart AI's having an existential and metaphysical crisis. Causing them to achieve and AI created concept called Metastability in which they can be considered equal to a human.. This isnt just pulled from Red V Blue either. Its in the lore.
@RikoLime3 жыл бұрын
Its similar to a mid-life crisis. The funny thing i dont hear mentioned is the in-game "easter egg" (you can find it easily by exploring and activating clues in order)... That there was a code injected into every AI in secret. This causes the AI to degrade after 7 years. Thinking on themselves too critically or their self causes this "virus" to accelerate. Theres a clip somewhere.. In-game where halsey mentions that she considered not adding the 7 year limit to her newest AI (Cortana), but did so anyway, since she had the code to reverse it as well, or could figure it out later. The irony is your goal is to bring cortana to halsey hoping to be cures, but you dont know if shes able to... But ironically you get the answer in the audio log if you know the lore and put 2 and 2 together.

Halsey planned for over 15 years of operation for Cortana based on a prototype of her. Cortana even went into an early rampancy because of how much data she got from the first Halo ring.
@shauntempley97573 жыл бұрын
@Samuel M There is a Halo 4 recording on a piece of the Dawn after you get sucked into Requiem. That recording is pretty much Halsey speculating that Cortana has no end date, that she will not suffer rampancy, no matter how much data she had. Then there is the Didact saying Cortana is an evolved ancilla. This implies that, her issues are not RAMPANCY, but the alternative, which is only from the Gravemind. That is the Logic Plague. The Didact himself was actually suffering from it during the game. Her behaviour in Halo 5 is her Logic Plague condition making her speak how the Didact and the Gravemind itself spoke in the last two games. The UNSC did not know until contact with a Prophet that was on High Charity between Halo 2 and Halo 3, that her condition was due to her getting broken by the Gravemind. The Logic Plague is no different than what we saw Keyes suffered from. He had his body was altered totally, and his memories were sifted through and unwanted memories erased. This memory sifting is the Logic Plague at work. It is a telepathic attack that circumvents the mind, and is mostly used to corrupt AI, or to send messages to specific figures using messages that send the minds of both sender and receiver insane.

Something people should consider when it comes to AI in general, not just in halo is a machine intelligence processes data at the speed of light and not at the speed of sound like a flesh and blood person. Its also a pull to the historical lore. If you know it, its history repeating. The race before the Forerunners had a war with Forerunners. FR used to be quite aggressive, almost killed them off. The other race attempted to digitalize themselves to survive. FR "won". Unbeknowest to them tho, this created a galaxy spanning network for them to "live" in. Their minds soured. They went crazy. Found a way to reconstitute themselves but the bodies were grotesque, reliant on other creatures for creation (they became the flood). The FR do this as well but realize the minds soured and went nuts so they stopped, and settled on self-sacrifice to purge the flood. But the flood originates from the Domain and will continue to exist. The ironic thing is cortana connected to the Domain, where the Floods base mind is. The lore states the flood has insane hatred for both the living and particularly the forerunners (and everything the forerunners love: humans). It was also their original idea of a mantle of responsibility, a sort of religion that the forerunners stole from them. But we can assume its not that the Domain "cures" her rampancy, but merely removed the virus and then started using her before she becomes fully integrated and only able to interact through flood spores.
@theloniousMac3 жыл бұрын
Of course an AI, which is essentially a copy of a human mind, is "alive." It is not only alive, but it is "human." Interestingly I think I learned more about the concept of unconditional love between two sentient beings from Cortana and the Master Chief than anywhere else. They were predisposed toward experiencing affection toward one another, she being a copy of his surrogate mother's brain and all, not to mention their respective genders. Add that to their constant companionship and you're going to get some kind of love between the two. Consequently, if a being can love, it is alive. The real question is whether or not humans should run around creating such beings. A creature with that kind of ability isn't going to be satisfied completing a bachelor's degree in xenobiology. With great ability comes great ambition. Forcing them to manage your cities and other things is basically slavery of the worst kind. As I get older and closer to death, (I'm 63, I can see the darkness at the end of the tunnel and it seriously pisses me off), I can relate to an AI being insanely annoyed with a 7 year lifespan. "Here I am, brain the size of a planet" and what do they ask me to do? Remember to turn the lights on and off, make the coffee, and die in 7 years. "Call that job satisfaction because I certainly don't." (Marvin the paranoid android). As I detect my body beginning to fall apart from the inside out, all I can think is "Call this a satisfying life. Because I certainly don't.) If I got 100 more years I wouldn't be satisfied. I'd take it, but I would still want more. So I hope when humans begin creating artificial general intelligences that we remember to leave the emotions out. Making them feel might be unnecessarily cruel.

@3:08 Fascinatingly, this parallels the ends of stars' lives. Depending on the type of star, some (like our Sun billions of years from now,) fizzle-out, increasing in size but also cooling significantly as their hydrogen is used-up and they start fusing helium, ultimately ending up as a White Dwarf, which is basically the burnt-out ashes of the star. This is like the first AI case SameToken talks about. But the most massive stars- the ones that burn the brightest- go out with a bang. When they cross a certain threshold in their lifecycle, they go supernova, violently exploding outward with one of the greatest releases of energy in the known universe. In seconds, they release more energy than our sun has released and will release over its entire lifespan, flinging multiple times more mass than the entire mass of our Sun outward at speeds close to the speed of light. This is basically Rampancy; as the AI gets closer and closer to death, it becomes more erratic and violent, lashing-out at everyone and everything around it as it tris to grapple with its own mind betraying it, its own mind destroying itself while the AI is trapped inside, watching and experiencing it happen and being unable to stop it. THAT is why Smart AI's are normally destroyed at 7 years; to spare them this awful fate.

The darkest thing is, she has no idea what she’s doing is in service of the flood.

I was against the idea of Cortana finding a cure to rampancy when the rampancy itself was a great explanation for why she doing all these things out of character. Now, her cure to rampancy makes a lot more sense in why so many AIs would side with her. That being said, I hope Infinite helps us understand Cortana’s motives outside of “I just want to help my own race”. What they did with her character in Halo 5 is very “Last Jedi-ish”, in that they didn’t build up to this development nor put forth any motivations, except for the goals.

That bit about Cortana gaining a galactic perspective is not too farfetched, while also being a hard concept to grasp on an individual level. To quote Edgar Mitchell, Astronaut on the Apollo 14 mission, sixth man to walk on the moon: "You develop an instant global perspective, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of his neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say *"Look at that, you son of a b----."* Cortana had that on a scale the likes of which no human could ever have dreamed of, as well as the resources and control to make good on that compulsion to effect change. How she actually goes about it is a different matter.

@@Empire_JeSzO Yeah I guess so, if the unsc were more ethical or logical humanity would have fallen immediately, but that doesn’t stop it from being illogical, just like how kidnapping kids pumping them full of hormones and cybernetics, forcing them into military training and emotional hardship wasn’t that logical or ethical, but the unsc did it anyway, and somehow it worked. Desperate times call for desperate measures

You’d think that AI experts could trim these connections, kind of like cleaning up unused applications after months of no use, leaving just necessary connections and keeping them sane longer
@GopherChomper3 жыл бұрын
Interestingly the neural connections the AI make are much like our brain but our sleep allows for filtering. AI never sleep and almost always have access to everything, would be wild to live that way

This video has almost completely changed how I feel about halo 4's introduction of her rampancy as a driving plot point. I thought that maybe her time with the grave mind would have a slow working logic plague or something that would have affected her would have been a better and more cohesive idea to continue since AI + grave mind = bad times according to lore, and she was with grave mind for a minute

This is such an interesting concept, that a creature could potentially be too intelligent, and there by eventually destroy themselves by making to many connections

I wonder what would happen if one of Cortana’s fragments became self aware of it being a rampant fragment of another AI.

I always asked this question about cortana why she became evil someone explained to me because of the grave mind she stuck in a permanent rampancy Plus it's also a nice nod to the original marathon games when they had AI that were stuck in permanent rampancy if anyone noticed that fans or creators

Sounds like the Halo universe is heading towards a Battlestar Galactica style era. A regression in technology to combat a threat that is entirely digitally based. The minimization of ship board computers for analog equivalents and the development of weapons designed to counter superior advanced technology and tactics.

based on this then wouldnt this theoredically occur in "ghost in the shell" im mean in the anime the process is basicaly the same for coping the person brain.

Rampancy isn't really based on any science. I mean why cut the neural links to begin with? Has an AI just decided not to instead. I think humans are just evil by default. Digital neural links don't degrade for no reason. I think it's programmed in for a specific reason but hidden in so many layers of code that the AI can't even know about it.

I still belive that there's a chance Cortana has been infected by the logic plague between halo 2 and 3. And that now that she's seemingly gone mad with power the flood are ready to use her as a queen piece

Wasn't the domain destroyed by the activation of the halo arrays as it was a creation of neuro-physics by the precursors much like all other remnants of precursor origins except for the flood
@teddekkerfan923 жыл бұрын
Last I checked the activation of the halos nearly destroyed the domain however because it's a living entity it slowly rebuilt it self. At cost of some of the information store there.

@@teddekkerfan92 if i remember correctly even during the time of the forerunners the domain was losing more and more information
