So I am going to make an important acknowledgement here. This caller, "Dan," may be young and accordingly naive, but the little guy does a great job at remaining calm, polite, and respectful. All other MR callers, specifically Jim, Walter Block, and Daryl of DarylLand could all tske a hint and follow in Dan's relatively large foot steps!

My transition out of libertarianism was mostly the slow realization that libertarianism is simply a pipeline into corporate fascism. The state is just a corporation, the services/goods they peddle is a monopoly in authority/violence because it’s human nature to monopolize violence/authority. The libertarian paradigm of how the world should work largely ignores human nature, and that’s why it’s a joke. I still love me some Ayn Rand novels though

I have to hand it to Dan; he's totally naive about the complexity of civilization with all of its moving parts interacting all at once, but he's probably the most civil, reasonable and intelligent libertarian to call in to Sam's show, with maybe the one possible exception of that Canadian newspaper columnist. This is the most intelligent Libertarian I have heard on your show, and it is fairly hard to find a second-place finisher in that category. It was funny, though, that after 19 minutes of a slow boil of hermeneutics and nuanced definitions of the subject matter, out came the argument about the magically unified Community Militia fighting against the big employer in the neighborhood, despite some of them probably wanting jobs at that company, and the Private Defense Force fighting against the company's much larger Private Defense Force. Are either of these things really a sufficient check on power? Or is it up to the aggrieved citizen to start his own fledgling tire-making company and put the big company out of business before he gets sick from the fumes?

I was one of those libertarian, an-cap teenagers and while ofc I grew up, I'm still glad I did it. Made me think a lot, read some smart (if mistaken) essays, and figure out how to communicate complicated ideas. I grew up in a very progressive community (it definitely had to do with some teen rebellion) so it also taught me to question what I was taught. Right wing anarchism was my gateway to left wing anarchism lol. I think this kid might go through the same thing. I mean, bringing up war and political repression, or the concept of universal income, or worker co-ops blossoming, this kid is already showing good signs. Sorry Dan, but you need to practice better skepticism. There's no evidence to suggest that 'worker co-ops would blossom' without the government, that's an enormous and unjustified claim. And private militias in place of police would be a major downgrade; some chunk of the population wouldn't pay into the system (due to being poor, uninformed, etc), and would be uncovered when they're in need of help. Whereas our current system covers everyone.

Not to mention, with anarcho-capitalism, it would become nearly impossible to climb the social ladder. Someone’s got to pay for the roads and if it isn’t the government, then it’s going to be a private interest. “Got a job that’s 20 miles away? Excellent! Just pay me (the owner of the road), $200/day, to use the road, as part of our gold plan! We don’t sell the silver plans and below to people travelling more than 15 miles to work everyday. What? Your company doesn’t pay you nearly enough because there’s no regulations on how much your employers pay you? That’s too bad!” And it goes on and on with every facet of life. And forget rising the social ladder with good ideas-there are no neutral parties who will protect your patents. There’s nothing to stop any privately owned patent office from selling your patents to the highest bidder-they gotta make money too you know! What ancaps and libertarians don’t understand is that society is a lot more complex than just “supply and demand” and “taxes” and “the invisible hand!” and “economics”. There are networks and systems and people involved. Business is almost as much about people and understanding human nature as it is about money. You have to understand your markets, which are made up of *people*, network with *people*, satisfy clients-aka *people* etc. in *pursuit of profit*. All that is lost on libertarians. Human nature plays a big role in how society turns out. The economic system involved is just the input that people will respond to, but it guarantees no result. TL;DR Libertarians don’t understand that an entirely free market will not solve all their problems, and can even make them worse, because the people involved in that market are more nuanced and complex than that.

Which militia is Dan talking about? Militias are commonly anti-government, racist, religious fanatics involved in terrorism. None of them care about pollution and, as libertarians, they'd tell the poor to get a job then move away. Good luck finding any local militia or private security that follows procedures, enforces laws, and fights off other militias. While many police are far from perfect, who do you think would take over and who dictates what they do? It's the same people with even less accountability and corporations. It's been a few months, but I wanted to make another argument: libertarianism includes a wide scope and its different proponents have contradictory philosophical and economic foundations. Libertarians advocate for smaller government. How small? That is a very important debate within the ideology. Thus, instead of using the catch-all term, it is probably more useful to ask the person in question if they are a constitutionalist, minarchist, or anarchist, and go from there.
@SteveGellerMusic
@SteveGellerMusic 9 жыл бұрын
hihihitaytaytay Ok. But you should probably come to grips with the fact that the differences that separate you into these groups are nowhere as large as the similarities that put you imperfectly under the umbrella of "Libertarianism." Even people who agree with one another on virtually everything are going to find 10 differences of opinion to debate about. If those two people have to be separated into different groups, it is misleading because they typically agree on virtually everything. I can't have a debate with 20,000 individual people. That is why it makes sense to find broad similarities and debate people who are largely (if not always perfectly) representative of the general movement. You can't make any sort of political statement about any ideological group if everything is going to sink into the cracks of slight variations from person to person.

Its adorable to watch kids debate things that they don't actually fully comprehend. The idea that someone like the Koch are just going to "follow the rules" makes me wanna just hand him a snuggly blanket and a warm cup of cocoa 'cause this kind of innocence is the type of thing we need more of in the world.

Fun fact: when someone uses the phrase "it's interesting that...", 95% of the time the thing that follows that statement is not interesting at all.

I think Libertarians and Progressives should unite to promote a socially liberal agenda, legalize marijuana, legalize gay marriage, protect a women's right to choose, and most of all Get money out of politics! Then we can crush the Libertarians on economic policy.

Except libertarians don't want to legalize marijuana, legalize gay marriage, protect a woman's right to choose, or even necessarily get money out of politics. Libertarians want to take away the government's power to legalize or criminalize marijuana, take away the government's power to recognize any marriage, take away the government's power to defend or oppress a woman's right to choose, and claim that taking away the power of government to do things is how to limit corruption and oppose laws that outlaw corruption. The main problem with taking away the federal governments power is that power is than granted to the states. Which means rather than one fight to legalize or protect something at the national level, we are faced with 50 smaller fights to do the same thing.

And what happens if the "rubber burning plant" has a militia of its own?Private wars? Economic deregulation would give corporations greater power to control the supply of money than they have now. I mean if the whole idea of the problem of government is that coporations can buy government, then the vehicle of control simply changes from government to something else when you deregulate the markets to the degree these people want it.

Have to give this one a lot of credit. Was respectful, at least put some thought into things. Sounded young, which makes me glad, at least they are interested in politics and doing some thinking. Judging by the other Ls who call in, or at least most of them including prominent ones, this kid is twice the person and thinker they are, at least. Which means he'll probably be a liberal by the time he grows up.

Dan is the most well mannered Libertarian guest I have ever heard on a political show. Hands down The problems arise when economic realities, societies well established social contract & just a basic governmental structure that any civics class would clearly demonstrate, are all ignored, favoring this fantasy. It is unproven, & when rationally placed against the fabric of reality, all becomes "untenable" It is little more than "Free market/money is god/power" while not noting the well documented horrors of those unchecked markets crippling almost all of society. He shows such a 'fundamental ignorance' of basic economic realities that he has no counter measures for. Just shrug, & say: "Well, I though it just would of worked" after clearly explaining, "No, we've had this system before with horrific results"

This kind of episode always reminds me of a South Park episode. A hippie is going on about how "someone could bake bread, someone could make shoes, someone could ..." Kyle replies "like a town?" Hippie: "No. You just don't get it." When libertarians are pressed to explain how a libertarian society would work, we generally end up where we are now. "Someone could enforce the laws, someone could hold others accountable, someone could oversee how people do things..." "You mean like a government?" "No! You just don't get it."
