SAMSUNG HAS CHANGED THE GAME! - Odyssey G9 Gaming Monitor Preview

If you're a member of any Gaming or Sim Racing Facebook group, you've undoubtedly come across the countless daily posts asking if "Triple screens" are better than a single ultrawide display. "Just buy VR" comments aside, there are more often than not, some pretty compelling arguments from both sides of the camp.
So it's no surprise that the gaming and sim racing communities almost instantaneously lit up with hype the moment Samsung announced their upcoming Odyssey G7 and G9 Gaming Monitors. So in today’s video we're going to take a look at some of the reasons why these new monitors may well be the "perfect solution" we've all been waiting for when it comes to gaming and sim racing, and why they may even compel me to make me switch from my triple 35inch screens.

There is one issue with curved monitors. Game projects perspective on a virtual window of view which is a flat surface. When a flat surface is displayed on a curved monitor the perspective gets distorted. A kind of fisheye effect. The only solution to fix that is when monitors producers will address directly to DirectX and Vulcan developers to add a curved field of view to those libraries. But I, gray worm, have no voice. It is up to content creators and influencers to address that issue to producers and developers.

My glasses have curved lenses so I ideally get more FOV. Distortion only happens if you're looking it on an angle. Same with screens.

@@freevbucks8019 As a noob like me it seems like a very complex topic. There are at least 3 points where distortion happens. Determining the virtual camera in a game (the box you get displayed) mapped to a resolution on a screen, and how the FOV changes it, and the angle your eyes have to points on the monitor. IF developers use virtual camera's hoping it is displayed on a flat screen then a curved screen will distort it. But being further away from points on a monitor will at some point also cause lot's of distortion. Do they compensate? Maybe... And FOV seems to be implemented differently per game. Some give you heavy fish eye effects, and some don't. I don't know what the deal is with that.

@@lystic9392 Your cornea is curved, and in close distances, since the light from the curved monitor centers to a point in your eyes, that means you wouldn't have a noticeable difference in distortion.

Thanks for the heads up Will! Very informative, and let's be honest, more technical terms than my helmet could process! I've only had my triple screen setup for a short while, and prior to discovering Helios Display Management (a tiny, free, extremely helpful app for saving, and loading monitor configurations) I was ready to throw the 3 screens out the window, as nVidia's surround is the single shittiest excuse for software I have ever used. Now that I am using Helios Display Management I am super happy with my triple screen setup, and switching configurations between my 4 monitors and TV screen is as simple as a double click. Having said that ... I wouldn't say no to having that starship in my setup somewhere - it does look amazing!

I have been waiting for years now for a 32:9 monitor that has both 1440p resolution and 120+ htz. Last I checked, everything on the market is either 1080p or 60htz, and that has been incredibly frustrating. I really hope the G9 is as good as it sounds!

I have a Samsung 32:9 set as triples in iRacing. Works well to mitigate the fisheye warp effect. Only 1080p vertical res though which is pants but does allow me to run silky smooth 144hz :)

The monitor stand looks just like the one on my current 49" Samsung Monitor (IDFK the actually name, it's a bunch of numbers and letters). So, if that's the case, it does come with a VESA bracket that hooks into the back of the monitor. So, that shouldn't be an issue.

Most sims nowadays have inbuilt projection correction algorithms. So it shouldn’t be a problem but definitely something I will be testing in detail if I can get my hands on one.

Although I do get a hardon for this,I do not see a reason why I need specifically this for achieving the same thing. I have a C9 now updated to support gsync , and on a oled I can achieve whatever aspect ratio I want be it 21:9 or even wider while enjoying normal content in 16:9.. I do say its impressive af..

Brand new to market very soon, correct? I won't get excited until I see a detailed review by BM and TFT Monitors site. First off, the 49" is a non-starter for me... just too big for my desk real-estate. Second, why they chose to do the G7 in a 32" width surprises me. If it was a 34/35" then I would be more interested. So, # 1 on my list monitor remains the LG 38GL950G until I see a full review of the Samsung.

This is the one. The one we were waiting for I think. The existing 49" monitors hits the spot for size, but not enough curve. This one hits the mark with 1000R and Gsnc. Don't care about the 240 hz as I find 120 hz is plenty for sim racing and hard enough to push with a 2080ti and high resolutions.

I tend to agree with you Will ...that IS a wonderful monitor. But for me it is hard to go back to ANY single screen after being wrapped by 114 inches of 4K video. I use three 43 inch 4K TV's. They are cheap with only a 60 Hz refresh rate ...so I keep game settings at 60 FPS ...it is less taxing on the system. I do not get near 4K resolution across a display this big with the RTX 3080 but while racing ...do we even notice? It is still phenomenal!!! Do I need 240 FPS? ...& I'm not sure if I've ever witnessed "screen tearing" to be honest. The displays reach back to the maximum of my peripheral vision ...so the emersion is 100%!!! In a dark room with the sound system near maxed out it is something else ...like being there. (I need a Butt-Kicker) ...lol! Try doing the Dragons Tail in a Ferrari on BeamNG for nervous fun ...you'll see what I mean. I have one question ...objects at the extreme outer ends of my side displays are "skewed" ...& the right hand side is worse ...starting at the side mirror & more in some Sims/Games than others. MSFS 2020 does NOT support a three screen display but the skewing is the LEAST in that app ...while it is quite bad in the first Assetto Corsa. Got any suggestions? I use the Nvidia "Video-Surround" app to set the 3 screen display. Thanks Will.

Depends what you’re trying to do but a 2080ti or Titan would be the only current card that could drive this resolution at 240FPS with high settings.

@@boostedmedia Wait what? There is no way a 2080ti could drive this at 240FPS unless you are playing on a minimally demanding game such as CS:GO. Perhaps Car Sims aren't as demanding I guess? This is close to a 4K screen, and a 2080ti struggles to get 60 fps in most games at 4K. However, next gen of GPUs are around the corner and some projections say they will be about 50% faster than previous generation so that's the cards you will want to but, coming out at a similar time as this monitor.

Please read if your considering this monitor!! So I have this monitor already.... basically, I have the CRG9, not to be confused with the prior CHG90 it's the same panel, same size, same body, same resolution and from what I can gather so far the same 10bit color, but a different controller and different curvature on the Odyssey G9, the free sync controller in the CRG9 is 100% compatible with gsync no issues whatsoever. But the current bandwidth limitations of display port will limit what you can really do with the G9, the CRG9 suffers the same issues. So the CRG9 is a 120hz, but if your running the monitor at 5120x1440, with 10bit color in RGB no compression, due to the bandwidth restrictions you will be limited to 100hz, you can squeeze the 120hz but you need to swap from full beautiful uncompressed color to 422 Chroma subsampling, and that makes all text looks jagged and horrible, and also makes the overall image just look a bit shit. This also differs when HDR is enabled, that also appears to be the same as the CRG9, the HDR is totally bogus, just leave it disabled and forget it's an option, it's just a paper spec to match the requirement of 1000nits peak brightness, but that's a conversation I'm going to leave for now. So the exact same will apply with the Odyssey G9 theoretically, from what we know so far, as we don't have the full spec sheet from Samsung, the max you can run this monitor using all the advertised features is the exact same as the CRG9, 5120x1440 at 100hz in 10bit RGB color. Now I'm not shitting all over Odyssey G9 the curvature is dope!! But don't be fooled by the marketing specs like a lot of people were when the CRG9 launched, you most most certainly will not be able to run the monitor all full advertised capacity. And with the added features and gsync module the MSRP is going to be very high, so unless you REALLY need the curve and the price is substantially higher then the current 1,100 euro msrp of the CRG9 then go with the CRG9, it looking like a much better value at this point.

Thanks for sharing. Im trying to decide a upgrade for my asus pg348q which is 100hz 3440x1440 and i have come down to 3 options. LG 38GL950G Asus PG35VQ Samsung Odyssey G9 And the things i was wondering about with the samsung one was this bandwith issue i didnt understand aswell as how good "gsync compatible" is compared to a actual gsync chip. As for the asus pg35vq, it seems to have some possible issues of hdr blooming or bad color contrast when fald is turned off to remove blooming. There are also some posts saying the monitor has flickering issues. As for the LG, there are posts saying this has flickering issues aswell. and it has a slightly taller resolution than i want to but its not necesarily a big problem

My off the hip opinion so far is that the 240hz is unnecessary due to our nature and being able to comprehend anything faster then I believe 60hz anyways or frames. That is to my understanding anyway. Totally love the white coloring and to bad it may not be that way for the G7. Now with it being a 1440 Panel shouldnt that help increase the VFOV? I could have a misunderstanding of what that is so I will have to look into that lol but call me crazy I as amazing as they look I just dont think Price vs. Performance will be there. I used to feel the same way about the whole “your eyes can’t see more than 25FPS” thing. But there is a huge difference to me at least between 60HZ and 100Hz. After that not so much though. Larger vertical resolution won’t add more field of view, just better clarity within it.

@@boostedmedia Ohh I totally agree Will. 60 to 75 to 100 to 120 all noticeable changes but that is where it starts to taper off for me . My 120 cap in iracing seems no smoother then a no limit or a 144 cap. But that is my opinion and will not reflect others real world experiences especially for those who have monster PC's that can carry the weight of higher frames in Hi Res scenarios!

Not so keen on Samsung gear anymore!!! I purchased a 49" ultrawide monitor late in 2019 and so far ir has spent more time away for repairs than it has on my rig for racing. It's away for a second time atm and has been for the last three and a half weeks!!! WTF Samsung! Love what your doing Wil... Keep it up mate!

Yeah Mate... It sucks alright! I just want to race again for sure. I knew sending it back in for repairs at tis time of year would result in delays but I just want it sorted. The whole point of going for the UW display was for the simplicity and hassle free nature of a single screen. Apart from the price tag on the G9 probably starting at $4k locally, and the fact I’ve yet to see any detailed testing on pixel response times for a qled display to know how they stack up against other panel techs, there’s so much promise in this family of monitors!

its VA panel it will have color shifting and ghosting, bad color accuracy . I was considering to buy the 49' inch but its not worth it even at 700euro. The VA have bad viewing angles and on such a big screen you always look at angle this means you always have color shifting . Quantum dot its just s buzz word its actually filter that dont do much . 1 ms responsce time its not realistic . Overall if you want good high end monitor go for Alienwear or LG IPS 34 i have them booth one on the desk and one on the rig.

Martin Turbo uh you realise that a quality va panel, especially like the one that will then go into a panel of this caliber, is often on par with most ips panels for colour accuracy metrics? Viewing angles often get close if not equivalent too which leaves pixel response times - now that’s an area where va does suffer

Tell me one professional VA Monitor ? The calibration on IPS and Va is on different standard you can get it close to 2.2 but its not the same metric. Viewing angles are always better on IPS. VAs a overall slower on average than IPS but they have problem with the black to grey shifting time and even on asus strix 35 its over 50 ms and this creates ghosting.

@@YayDanMan Samsung's previous ultrawide offerings had very poor color. And even Samsung's current highest end QLED displays aren't crazy in terms of color accuracy. I wouldn't doubt it if this new display lacks in terms of color.

This is Qled and not OLED !! Qled is huge different than OLED ! OLED is much much better in therms of contrast because the only technology that has real live Blacks because every pixel makes his own light and can be turned Off! and this technology is Lg propietary. Q Led is a imitation of OLED ...and simply nothing else than common LCD screen with LED array backlight ! the only difference is a wide dynamik backlight array where normal LCD have statik backlight.

Samsung pulled out the stops. You want to be the best, you have to offer what others don't. NO ONE is selling 1440p 240hz this year except samsung. They are the only ones. Now some brands like ASUS are sticking with 1080p and going 300hz.... but even that is still HOLDING BACK. With the cable standard we have (dp1.4) technically 1080p 480hz without HDR is possible.... so why isn't ASUS giving the full 480hz? because they do not want to push boundaries. They are so complacent with raping customers pockets because their customers don't demand more. I mean, you can get an OLD 144hz 1080p monitor for like 120 bucks, and these brands are STILL selling 1080p 144hz at 250 bucks new (many shown at CES....). Its just SAD. I had actually sent many emails to Samsung about this. And apparently, they listened. They not only want to CORNER the market, but they want to give us MORE than what other brands offer. I mean, if you want the recognition as the BEST, you have to sell that others don't have. And no other brands are selling 1440p 240hz.... none. zip. zero. Samsung is gonna kill it in sales. And even if other brands go 1440p 240hz, they wont have HDR!!!! So this samsung is a huge huge win. Even their smaller HDR600 1440p 240hz offering will kill it in sales.

1080p 480hz is just theoretical max, not actual max, this would be expensive as hell to make and hardly anyone will actually want to buy it as 99% of people won't be able to see the difference in 240hz and 480hz. Besides what games can actually play that high besides the 2/3 games? Also the Samsung g9 won't be able to display the full 240hz unless they do some trickery as dp 1.4 doesn't have enough bandwidth.

@@benclimo461 1080p 480hz is not the theoretical max..... its not expensive to make it all. you fail to realize monitor profits at through the fucking roof. They are selling 1080p 240hz for about 350-550 bucks, which cost them less than half that to make. 1080p 144hz still going for 250-300 and they cost like 50 bucks to make.... panels are one thing, and generally not made by the companies selling monitors. its up to the company selling the monitor to run the panel at a rated spec. so if the company decides to drive the panel at 240hz, the can. a great example is in fact samsung, they are using the SAME VA panels they did in 2019, in their 2020 line up, and yet the specs are better (like 1440p 240hz as apposed to 1440p 144hz). it all comes down to the monitor brand and what they want to push..... samsung, WAS the only one early this year to mention 1440p 240hz. then after they made a huge splash, other brands seem to be rushing 1440p 240hz out the door, like AOC and their "out of nowhere" 1440p 240hz hdr400 1/2ms monitor...... they have the capability, they don't do it because retards like you go "we can't run it, we need faster gpus" or "its not possible" blah blah blah. you are as stupid as they hope you are.... its all about building the motherboard/brainboard for the monitor to run at a rated spec. monitor technology is stagnant because they can milk profits off uninformed consumers. we have been running 1080p 144hz for how long now? as far as the G9, DP1.4 has DSC which means its actual max is 8k60 though the data is compressed. if it can do 8k60, then 1440p 240hz is not an issue, nor will be ultra wide. so no trickery needed. the fact that you don't know this, shows how limited your knowledge is, and therefore everything you say is just bullshit. HDMI2.0, yeah sure, it can't even handle 1440p 144hz HDR, you either get 1440p 120hz HDR or 1440p 144hz SDR.... HDMI is TRASH. And once DP2.0 hits, it will be able to do 8k60 without compression, as well as 16k60 with compression. HDMI is DEAD.
