Yes. I would absolutely pay for a web browser. In fairness it would need to have a reasonable trial. But an ad free browser... Not having to worry about constantly updating extensions to keep up with all the changing ads. Not having to fiddle with your settings constantly to minimize data collection. I mean I'm reasonably savvy on these issues compared to at least your average normie and even I still find myself playing catch up on my settings sometimes. Like accidentally forgot to turn off some kind of telemetry or it turned itself back on.

It doesn't need a new owner necessarily. There just needs to be basic protection rights for content creators especially if they are full time or have a whole production company behind them. I mean the ruling over what is and isn't a strike is completely arbitrary and fighting a claim is nearly useless as google doesn't want to admit that the algorithms they use to flag content is highly flawed and oftentimes they don't offer any reasons or clearly communicate with their content creators as to how and why strikes come to be. I wouldn't really be able to sleep comfortably knowing google could completely cut off my entire income or worse, send it to a fraudulent copyright claim or simply monetise my work without paying me at all. There is so much going on there that should be illegal but sadly isn't, because legislation and basically the entire government is decades behind in terms of internet right/laws.

I don't think so, chromium is just a very good open source browser to build on. Edge became significantly better after switching to chromium, the Edge built from scratch by Microsoft was trash. Not only when opening webpages but the interface as well was very bad and slow. Just giving credit where it's due 👍

He meant the one that forced game developers to only develop for Windows even though no one actually wants Windows other than it runs games. When was the last time you heard a developer say "I'd love to run Windows Server for my website" or "Wow, so glad I'm using Windows as my dev laptop?" Even if Firefox might have a slightely worse performance than those Chrome based browsers, at any point I give up a little bit of speed for not doing all my internet stuff under the eyes of the soulless mega corporation itself. And I was wondering, why up to this day, I still haven't had a single anti-adblocker screen on KZbin. Because I solely run Firefox, where they have no power over extensions, and I live in the EU, where Google isn't granted access to my system and scan for stuff they don't approve of.

Chrome is a branded skin ontop of an open source project. Nothing stops others from forking chromium and maintaining their own core (potentially without the manifest 3 part). The fact that a good service integrated version is the most popular is because it adds value for users and most people don't care to use others. Edge and others are all just chromium. A competent developer could make and release a de-googled chrome easily but the question is who wants it. This is not the same thing as windows or internet explorer from the past.
