It's interesting to see how much more engaged these engineers seem to be with you guys vs other media outlets. You all are clearly well educated and informed before even engaging with the engineers, so your caliber of questions seem to really perk them up and get them happily engaged. I agree. And I think that this new Macan will stand out as a real driver’s car, with lots of grins from behind the steering wheel. This is much different than the latest BMW products, whose hideous external appearance brings ridicule whenever they are viewed. @@future62 No, most SUVs tend to look alike, be they ICE or EV. I'd say the Macan and Alfa Stelvio are a bit unique, being more like lifted hatchbacks than square SUVs. What we do know is that the EV versions will be heavier than the ICE models, to their detriment.

Its not so surprising. Most people have difficult time retraining their brains during the transition of word meaning. There was a time when bad meant bad, but now it can also mean good or bad. While I'm at it, if I tell you "your singing was terrific," is that a compliment or an insult? Just consider we still refer to energy output rating in terms of horsepower. Which has nothing to do with actual horses. BTW, when you're talking about your ICE vehicle's primary means of propulsion, do you say engine or motor? Personally I think the whole gas vs EV argument is silly. Both have their purpose and pros and cons. We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced a pretty good ICE daily (older panamera turbo), and I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the panamera one bit. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), use of space (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, perfectly even weight distribution, and even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. We bought our Jag used CPO, and yes we’ve lost money on its value - but the same would have been true of the panamera or a Jaguar f-pace ICE suv. All luxury cars / daily driver values are dropping right now. EVs may be dropping quicker, but you also spend less on fuel and maintenance to make up for it. The only maintenance on our Jag in two years is a cabin air filter. Having said all of that, we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an older Mini Cooper JCW), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great, but I have no interest, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever giving up gas for sports cars.

You seem to be sidestepping the problem. If you buy and promote EV ownership of any variety, you are indirectly bringing about the end of the thing you say you want to keep. Well said. I wonder if it´s going to be possible for Manufacturers like Porsche to build both in the future, EV for Macan, Taycan, Cayenne etc. and then ICE for Carrera, Cayman etc. or if it is too expensive for companies to offer both technologies. Unfortunately the sports car market is very small and many brands currently subsidize their sports cars with regular, more usable vehicles. Developing a completely different engine technology and platform just for the sports segment could be too expensive

Amazing that you guys got to do an in-depth interview with one of the engineers and Carwow can only put out a video telling the audience what they know about it; that speaks volumes to the amount of trust you've built and how comfortable the manufacturers are with knowing that you aren't going to misrepresent them (WHILE being honest to the viewers, and as you've both stated before, being honest with the viewers while maintaining a good relationship with the manufacturer is a _very_ difficult thing to do).

As someone who owned about 10 gas powered cars (BMW, Acura, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Honda) since I got my license almost 20 years ago, currently own a C7 Grand Sport and been dailying a 2019 Model 3 for nearly 4 years, an EV daily cannot be beat for those of us who's lifestyle and charging supports it. The Tesla has been the best daily overall, with the caveat that we still have my Wife's Mazda for long road trips. I was excited about the Macan EV, but I think the price is going to be high (70K+), so I ended up putting a deposit in on a 24 Model Y Performance. Regardless, excited to see how this comes out. Thanks for the very informative video.

I know the answer is just "Because we have to change the least things from the gas version" but I'd love to know if these companies have plans to do more with hub motors, especially now that we are seeing lighter and lighter powerful motors with things like axial flux motors coming into the lime light so there are less worries or tradeoffs with unsprung weight. It feels like a really great chance to for once significantly lower the weight of these vehicles while making the interiors more spacious, so that is one of the bigger EV changes Im waiting to happen. I feel as if this whole thing of having body mounted motors is really just a thing while we are in this transition phase. No doubt the future EV sportscars that will feel the best will switch to this to add lightness.
@air-headedaviator1805
@air-headedaviator1805 8 ай бұрын
The immediate compromise of hub motors is them being exposed to the elements. Not just moisture and dust but rocks, curbs. Wheels and suspension live in the extremes of the drive, and having your powertrain there is risky.
@TheBCninja
@TheBCninja 8 ай бұрын
It won't matter how light they get. Slapping on another 45-100 pounds per wheel wrecks the driving dynamics. Now, having them inboard and that light is incredible and I'm all here for making these things lighter.
@BeefIngot
@BeefIngot 8 ай бұрын
@@air-headedaviator1805 I hear you, but its been done, and it turns out that this isnt actually that much of an issue. See the Rimac Nevera for instance or the Aptera. There isnt really all that risk, especially as brushless motors really are far more rugged than people realize, and we've had sealed bearings for decades.
@BeefIngot
@BeefIngot 8 ай бұрын
@@TheBCninjaI mean, it does matter how light they get doesnt it. At some point, with the smaller brakes you can put on EVs because of regen, you simply literally would hit the same weight regardless. Furthermore, look at cars like the Rimac Nevera or Aptera and tell me those have bad dynamics.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't spot any of the Porsche triangle P markings on the parts in the b-roll. What I did notice are a lot of VW AG markings. No surprise there as the front suspension is clearly Audi's typical four link arrangement. The drive units marked as VW AG is another hint that this is a Porsche rework of Audi's homework. So, the same formula as always for the Macan which indicates that it is a successful program.

Out of spec reviews said that when he interviewed the Audi engineers for Q6 e tron, they claimed they did the vast majority of the engineering on the platform compared to Porsche. Predictably, the Porsche engineers claim that isn't the case.
@LZ6U
@LZ6U 8 ай бұрын
Porsche deserves some credit for taking an Audi platform and giving it a more sporting character. Porsche has been making cars from Audi parts since the 70's, VW parts since day 1. Porsche's volume products have been re-engineered VW or Audi parts. The 914, 924/944, Cayenne, and Macan have gone a long way to keep Porsche alive. Porsche's Boxster borrowed a gearbox from the boring Audi B/C platforms. To make the Macan a differentiated product, I'm certain Porsche's calibration targets were different from Audi's. Porsche worked on marketing, styling, systems calibration/optimization. The hard points as they are known are quite certainly Audi. The Macan is reciprocity for the e-tron GT. Try to find an Audi logo on the parts used in assembly of the e-tron GT. Under the e-tron GT all you'll find are Porsche logos. @@pan4632
