I have been in printing and working with paper for 42 years. One very important factor for folding is grain direction. The second dimension is usually the grain direction. 8 1/2 x 11 will fold with the 11 direction better then across the 8 1/2. To make this confusing some papers are “short grain “ or have the grain run the other way. Sample fold the paper both directions and try to design your project to fold with the grain. Even though we have professional scoring equipment, when possible we take paper grain direction into consideration. I am a bit of a paper nerd!

I bought Recollections paper in craft, black and white for bases. I was pleased with the weight for bases but found that the craft and the black were not square! I started cutting my paper in half for bases and found they weren’t lining up and after lots of investigation realized the pages were off by as much as 1/16 of an inch! Michaels exchanged it for me but I now take a t-square with me when buying paper. Thanks for putting in the work...I will be trying Accent soon!

This was fascinating & became really interesting when I checked my cs. About a year ago, I went to Kelly Paper in the SF Bay Area, & bought 80# Neenah. The guy there showed me the Accent Opaque 100# at a much lower price & told me how similar the papers were. Gave me a bunch of samples too! Now I can do my own testing...visually I can't tell the difference. Nice to know a professional in the paper industry also recommends it! It's little things like this that just can make your day...especially after losing power for 9 hours today during a major heatwave....very annoying and uncomfortable!

Mary, I purchased the accent 120 pound to use solely for card bases. I did notice it tends to crack if not scored before folding and some did crack even when scored. It is a bright white and takes ink very similar to the Neenah so for the cost savings I will deal with the cracks. I do prefer the Neenah for ink blending and have purchased it from JoAnn’s as low as $27.00 with free shipping. Thanks for sharing your videos always contain so much valuable information. Take care.

But when byeing the card we need to know what the 'numbers' are. Ther obviously isnt a picture of floppyness lol... So i know i bought 160 GSM. and too flimsy for card making. Great review! I use recollections 110lb for my card bases all the time. I use their 65lb to mat and cut out designs. But for me in montreal the recollections is 15$ plus tax for 100 sheets and the accent is 31.99 plus tax for 200 sheets. So for me I am good with the recollections paper. It was good to see the comparison for the Neenah as I wondered if I should be spending more money for it as I see a lot of KZbinrs using the Neenah. Thank you for doing this video. As always Mary you are taking great care of us. Thank you for sharing

Dang it! I just got my Neenah paper in the mail yesterday. At least I know now rather than way down the road. This is the first time I’ve ordered card stock or bought white in bulk and thought the well known and respected person and her channel would steer me right. I’m sure she didn’t do it on purpose or maliciously, it’s not her style and she claimed Neenah was her favorite by far. She had even showed us a closeup of the large sticker that has all of the information about the paper on the opposite end of where you open it. Funny thing is, I had wondered what the GS had meant, I could’ve looked it up, but had thought I could do it later. Yes, it’s cheaper then in the stores, or so I thought minus the coupons at Michaels, so it’s definitely not all that bad. It is still good paper and it will be used up, I just wasn’t aware of the others and their pricing. I’ve learned a valuable lesson, always research the products that others recommend. Heck, I research everything else, so it won’t make a difference to continue, except to help save me from future mistakes. Plus, watching this channel will give me a nice leg up too, so thank you, big time! Stay smiling, good people and happy crafting! 🎈

Thank you for sharing this, ,truly! It's such an important conversation. When you are watching other crafters, listen to key words they say when recommending products. Often times, you are going to get great quality recommendations from some of the big designers, and you'll hear words like that..."Best quality, does all the things, my most used, my favorite, etc" but you might not hear "Most affordable". For some of them, it's not that they ONLY want to sell you the most expensive, but rather, they just haven't tried out less expensive products so they only know to recommend what they love. Not necessarily their fault, like you said. It's our responsibility to look around and see what we can find that compares. I made all these mistakes on my journey, that is why I started doing all of these review videos. I don't know of many crafters out there trying to save us money. Thanks again for such a great post!

So helpful, Mary. I live in Canada and Neenah 80 lb. on Amazon Canada is $47.50 (Canadian$) for 250. It will be Accent next time which is $20 for the 80 lb. TFS!

I purchased the Accent 120 lb. 325 g/m for $18.10 for 150 sheets. It’s smooth, bright white, and super heavy. I’m using up my thinner stock for card fronts and using this for card bases. I should say, I meant to order the 100 lb., but I do like the 120. It is SUPER heavy.

I saw a recommendation from another crafter for the accent, and grabbed two packs of the 120 lb. Glad I did, as I only paid 13.00 a pack, and I see the price as gone up a bit! Thank you for the time it takes to do these comparison videos, they are greatly appreciated! Another good one I like, but find a bit pricey is the 120 lb cardstock from SSS. Very strudy!

I bought the Neenah Exact, too, but on purpose. It works really well, but I have been finding that with alcohol markers it tends to bleed quite a bit. I'm currently working on comparing the Neenah exact, Accent, and Neenah classic crest in terms of coloring. I think I was inspired by your last video. 😄

Hello Mary: I just took delivery of the ACCENT 120lb card stock that you recommended in this video. Thank you for the informative and very thorough video demo, however, I just finished my folding tests with the stock with less than perfect results. The weight and brightness is great but they did not fold well. I did not use a scoring 'board' or tool so that may be the problem, however, with a smooth metal tool and flat surface, no matter how I tried I couldn't get a clean, fuzz-free fold.
@marypolancodesigns2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience with the 120lb. I don't remember if I show that in the video but with anything above a 80lb cardstock, I can't get smooth folds without the scoring tool. That might help you in your folding. The 120 is really very heavy as well so it makes it even more difficult. Not sure if that helps any. :)
@StudioGallery2 жыл бұрын
Further to my comments: I tried scoring the cardstock on a softer surface ie. a cutting mat with better results. The fold did not tear when I gently folded it.

Very helpful thank you! Do you have a video on affordable ways to source specialty cardstock? One of my favorite hacks is to get foiled birthday plates and cut out the large circle in the centers -Dollar Tree, even Target was worth it and they have rose gold plates). I've also been looking for large $1 gift bags at Dollar stores that might be cut up for specialty cardstock but haven't tried any yet.
