I love your idea of moving the hallway. It will add much needed area to the rooms. Please be sure to add a large bride room very fancy because I see the convent as a staggering wedding venue with the chapel and the bar you have planned. I'd reuse the doors in each room for closet doors with a drawer underneath for extra blankets, towels ect.. I'd hate to see the short doors go to waste. To get a curve in sheetrock/plasterboard, we spray it with water from a spray bottle just until it's damp enough to bend to the desired curve a then put it in place. No breakage.

Love the Library, especially the upstairs access. Which could be on a side hallway as well as center. Only concern with hallway is light. I can't figure out which way is north, but I know one would want the brightest light possible in the bedrooms so that it shines all the way into the inner parts of the room, not the hall as it will be close to it's windows. I am so glad that you have decided on hotel rooms, but it is just big enough to call it a small event center, with an eye toward small weddings, momentous birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Don't forget a place where a group could eat or maybe dance? How about a Bridal suite for a bride to dress with her entourage. Don't forget the groom and his besties near the chapel. Love the kitchen ceiling. You are doing a beautiful job. I suggest you hire hire a hotel consultant for a complete assessment before you do anything like this. Is there a need for a hotel? Why would folks come to Ernee? Are there local hotels for competition? Are other hotels viable or just hanging on? What are staffing costs? What are the upfront costs associated for renovating, furnishing, maintaining and updating rooms? Can guests adequately find parking? Will the town citizens be happy with an influx of tourists? Will it affect the towns quality of life? What events features or services does the surrounding area offer for tourism? What does the local chamber of commerce require? What insurance types will I have to carry? Would it be wiser to lease it to a hotel or hire a operations firm to manage a hotel? I know it’s a lot, but I do risk consulting for a living and always provide my clients with A LOT of information so they can make a sound decision on an investment or project and potentially return on investment or loss of investment. Personally, I would use this as an event space for weddings, social gatherings, dinners and events for event planners. They just rent the space(s) for x amount of hours for x amount of money and provide all the event equipment and manpower themselves.

It's possible my father was a patient at the convent hospital during ww2 after his tank was blown up, convent nurses cared for his burns until he could be sent back to England. He almost never spoke of the war but he often spoke of the Nurse Nuns and their kindness, while he lay in a saltwater bath due to burns over 50% of his body. His scarring was minimal due to their excellent care and prayer as he credited them for their knowledge in treating him. He returned to active duty, commander of another Tank. Many soldiers passed in the hospital, my father the only one of his crew to survive. Seeing the picture of the Garden behind the hospital makes the location even more of a possibility. Sadly he isn't with us anymore to show him, he passed aged 94. His Respect and appreciation for the Nurse Nuns was deep. The Nuns are almost all gone now, true hero's to so many! Something commemorative should be placed for them - a plaque or something?

Should the first floor hallway be running along the inner (courtyard) side Instead. The distance you would have to walk around the convent would be reduced and give you more m² for your rooms. It would also make sense as the hallway coming off the staircase is also along the inner side of the floor. If im not mistaken, if the rooms were located along the back of the convent, they would receive the sun and look over your future gardens.

The enlarged photos of the postcards showing the Convent grounds & property were a wonderful find and are invaluable for future reference. It would be a huge accomplishment if those grounds could be restored to their original condition. Raised vegetable beds & beds for perennial herbs and flowers along with some annuals would be amazing. It will not be easy to restore the gardens, as overgrown as they are and with the restrictions on how you can dispose of debris, but it would certainly be lovely. There is room for dwarf fruit trees, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, & strawberries. I wonder if the community would be interested in maintaining a community garden space there & in allowing a right of way for Billy's equipment to come through to work on that far end of it & to build another entrance that the community could use to access the gardens. Perhaps, another gate could be installed between the gardens & the private Convent grounds so that the community would only have access to the community garden area. I think the only reason the top floor seems so creepy is because it is long and dark & when it is renovated & the hallway repositioned as Billy proposed to let in more natural light the creepiness will be gone. Maybe some skylights could be added as well? Maybe it did not seem creepy when it was inhabited by a lot of short, aging, little nuns going about their day, caring for sick folk, working in the gardens, running soup kitchens & community outreach programs.

I agree with others that you really need to determine if there is a market for another hotel in such a small town. The idea of moving the corridor to make spacious suites is a good one. Again, a hotel with only about 15 guest rooms would need to be a pretty high-priced place, so you would need to be awfully certain about it before you started. Some chain like Romantik Hotels, which runs boutique hotels in historic buildings and castles, might want to have a say in how the renovations are done before they would be involved.

What I like about the staircase in the convent is: the steps are not high but very wide! In Québec city we have a 'Hôtel Dieu'. It was a convent for the 'Augustines', founded by 'la duchesse d'Aiguillon in 1637 and was One of the first hospitals established in North America. Now, it still is a Hospital. The Doors of the 'armoire' in the Kitchen, once sandblasted, you can very easily stain them to become a unified color. This is if you like the idea of wood rather than paint.

ahh, some interesting history.. 1637, Quebec,, that was just 2 years after my ancestor (9th Great Grand father,) Francois Belanger landed in the "New France" (Quebec) in 1635. He came over from Normandy on Capt. Giffords ship, along with his future wife, "Marie Guyon". and several others from the Normandy area.. I guess that's why I am so drawn to France, and Quebec.. :)

You never cease to amaze me with your ability to think outside the box with your idea of putting the hall along the windows. It will open the space up and also make it less spooky. In your planning, please take into account families, who like yourself and Gwen, would not want the boys sleeping on another floor. It might be good for some suites to have an attached double so you could offer families some flexibility. You mentioned architects being expensive, but another idea is to use an interior designer. They often work as a team with the architect and even take the lead in designing the living spaces. Those who’ve received formal education in design do far more than picking colors and fabrics.
