I rescued a dog from a high kill shelter. He was taken from his home by the police because of abuse. He went from one horrific situation to another at the shelter. Ever milestone he overcame was so incredible!!! Now he won’t leave my side. I highly HIGHLY recommend adopting from high kill shelters and I wish they didn’t exist!!

They do try to avoid it for all they're worth. Yes, please do adopt from municipal shelters and the like, but please don't go in and treat the people like dirt because you think they're killing animals and treating them like garbage until they do. They don't. I worked at a municipal shelter for a long time (btw, there's no such thing as a high kill shelter, just no-kill and ones that permit euthanasia). If a critter was healthy and friendly, we'd do anything to get them a home. We fed good adoptees to local no-kill shelters that were more popular (btw, that's usually how they get animals, they take the best selections from "kill" shelters. Don't get me wrong, not a bad thing, more places for animals to go to improve their odds of getting a home, just letting you know how that works), we supplied Petcos with kitties, sent dogs that were illegal in the city out, sometimes out of state, anything, anything to get those animals homes. We only put them down if they were so badly hurting that life wasn't worth it (and they got lots of love before they'd go), or if they were so mean and untouchable that even the behaviorists we'd send them to couldn't get anywhere. Heck, even then, we'll try alternatives. My dog was going to be one of those cases, but my mother and I took him away from the shelter, brought him home, introduced him to ranch life and he was my best bud for 14 years. So, yes, adopt, adopt, adopt, but please understand that even shelters that permit euthanasia are not out to get those animals and they will outright PARTY if you take a hard case (disabled, old, or otherwise generally unseen)!!!

@@abigailblackstock4928 Thank you for the work you do, Abigail. I know the employees at "high kill" shelters do their best with limited staff and resources and don't get the credit deserved. I got my beloved dog from one of these places. The staff had good pictures taken of her, a video and posted her availability in multiple places. This is how I found her. One day, I wandered to the shelter to look at her in person. No one had adopted her yet because she had kennel cough and wasn't very engaging. Multiple staff members and volunteers really went out of their way to sell her qualities and even gave me starter supplies and a free microchip just to get her out that day. Turns out her kennel cough had progressed to pneumonia and many people passed on her. The staff/volunteers went above and beyond for her and I'll never forget it. I know they did it because they knew she was a great dog and deserving of a home. Because of them, I took her home that day. I always say she was the best impulse decision I ever made. I had her in my life for 10 memorable years. Because of her, I will ALWAYS adopt from a shelter or rescue. She died almost two years ago and I still miss her very much.❤ I'm grateful people like you exist.

Great Pyrenees are amazingly resilient dogs. They often bounce back from trauma (both emotional and physical). Olaf is just a big fluff-ball!
@Secretagent71114 Жыл бұрын
I know people that had a Great Pyrenees to watch the flock of sheep their daughter raised for 4H. Being a livestock guardian, he refused to come into the house, would rather stay in the barn with his flock so they accomodated him even though he'd have been welcomed in the house as a family dog too. Then the daughter was killed (very tragic, 16 years old killed by a random very very drunk driver). As a result, they quickly decided to rehome the sheep because there was no one else in the family that knew how to take care of them. The Great Pyrenees was rehomed with the flock. Not because they didn't want him, but because that dog would have been completely lost and depressed without his flock and his job. It's probably the only time in my life I've not judged people for rehoming a pet because it truly was a decision out of love and understanding for that dog and was the best option.

I had a Great Pyr, we got him from a relative who had passed away and he was the biggest fluffy gfgikgdf, he would just us lay on him and it was the cutest thing ever. His name was Amos and we had to put him down because he had bad hip dysplasia which left him unable to go outside to use the bathroom, but before he went we gave him some donuts and lots of hugs

Such a beautiful story. I rescued a cocker spaniel who was used for just making babies. I named her Shyly. It was winter. We had to open the patio door and leave the room. She would run in and hide under the furniture. She slept in the closet until one night she ran and got behind my bed. My mom lived with me at the time. She called me and told me that Shyly had cried when I left for work. I said that’s a good sign! It means she’s bonding! When I came home she met me at the door and did the wiggle. One she came and stuck her little face out and let me pet her between the eyes. I became her momma that day for the next 12 wonderful years. Thank you for what you do! ❤

We rescued an aussie shepherd mix from the shelter a few years ago. She came from a really bad hoarding situation and she had almost no human contact until she was found. She was absolutely terrified of people. Thankfully she went to a no-kill shelter. She spent a year in that shelter, was adopted 3 times and surrendered back to the shelter all 3 times. When our home opened up for another dog we adopted her. She was so scared she would urinate if you look at her from across the yard. With some patience and love Saidee turned into the best dog we've ever had. We had 14 years with her. She passed away last month at the age of 16. I miss my Saidee May, but seeing her go from terrified of everything to a happy, healthy dog is one of the most beautiful things I've experienced. Long story short.... don't give up on these scared dogs. The result is life changing for both of you.

First I want to say thank you for rescuing him. As a Pyrenees owner of 3 through the years this is a typical life of a Pyrenees, I actually had to laugh as you guys were trying to move him, because that’s a true nature of the breed rescue or not. Some do not like going indoors ever and that’s ok, since they can truly endure any weather, some gradually will go indoors as they get older, like my 10 yr old boy Kodiak that I have now, though he does prefer the outdoor in the colder months, he goes where ever he wants and has always been a very chill guy who takes his job of protecting the property very serious patrolling it many times a day. For those that haven’t owned a Pyrenees, they are a breed with their own minds and they pretty much do what they want when they want. One of their most favorite things to do for fun is pounce at you or their siblings dogs, when they are in a playful mood. They are an amazing loyal breed and want to work protecting their flock be it farm animals or their people.
@jessieklein6621 Жыл бұрын
THANK YOU. Watching this video had me just shaking my head at how clueless they were being about his breed. He's just acting like a Great Pyrenees. He didn't move in the beginning because he didn't want to go with these strange people and leave his territory. He didn't come inside because he didn't WANT to. He wanted to be outside. I have my own Great Pyrenees. She's my first one but I researched the heck out of the breed so that I knew what I was getting into. She's amazing and I love her to pieces, even all her stubbornness!

All the comments from the Pyr owners are right on. I had a 154 lb Pyr (who...go figure, was the runt of the litter) and she was absolutely amazing, but yep...stubborn and up until her last year preferred to live outdoors. She would even sleep in the snow. Very protective of her "flock" and she was so loving, but extremely shy. She was the kindest dog I've ever known. At 13 she developed bone cancer and I had to let her go. Even as I'm writing this, I'm tearing up because I miss her so much. RIP my beautiful Brie.
