I look at the England squad for the 6N and say 'Yeah, that's a good one', then I look at the other teams, including Scotland and can't help feeling that we are just average.

in 2021scotland were 2 scores from a grandslam and 2 scores from a wooden spoon decider with Italy. They seldom if ever beat teams that are ranked ahead of them, and can almost be relied on to mess up a winning position at some point, or to lose the crucial game but turn in a superb performance against a superior team when it no longer matters. I think Townsend has been given a very long time to achieve something, and maybe a change would be worth trying. Cherry brings vim and vigour in the loose, has the best lineout and is a good scrummer.

Second Row in my opinion is not a problem at all. Few injuries in the last few months haven’t helped and Richie Gray retiring and moving to Japan. Jonny being back is a great, no place for Skinner as he just back from injury. Cummings is quality and coming into his prime. Gilchrist is aging like fine wine. Max Williams (only 22, 6ft 8, 122kg) would be in the squad but injured, Marshall Sykes, Gregor Brown all decent locks. Now if you look outside of Glasgow and Edinburgh you have Alex Craig (Scarlets) Cameron Henderson (Leicester Tigers) and Ewan Johnston in France. All very good operators. Second Row is not a weak position at all. J.Matthew does have a good scoring record but his line out throws aren’t great. Look at the South Africa match in the autumn. First thing to do was throw the line, misses his target then misses the tackle leading to the try. His counterpart at Glasgow Hiddleston should feel unlucky, although he is only 22.

Gilchrist Grey and Cummings are good but not great, better in defence than attack, but their carries always seem to be intended to set up a ruck rather than break tackles and set up tries.
