Scottish comedian on the worst and weirdest responses to the Ukraine invasion - Corbyn to Carlson

My latest video is on the most woke, cringey and weird responses to the Ukraine invasion. Obviously it features leftists like Diane Abbott, Jeremy Corbyn and women with thick rimmed glasses, green fringes, septum piercings and OnlyFans accounts.
But I was shocked to see some bizarre anti-Western pro-Putin responses from the right, too - even respected figures such as Mike Pompeo and Tucker Carlson. I go through these and look at some of the reasons.
Being pro-Putin isn't the hot right-wing contrarian edgelord take some people think it is. Being unpatriotic, anti-democratic and anti-West doesn't make you spicy. It makes you Jeremy Corbyn.
I also demolish the perceived wisdom that Putin is a defender of Christianity, good for Russia and militarily strong and smart. He's none of these things. Few dictators die of old age.
"But you're a comedian, what would you know?" My last proper job was for the Foreign Office, I've also worked as a national security consultant and I'm now a political commentator/gobshite across TV, radio and print. So I'm not pulling all of my opinions out of my ass. Just half of them.
To support my work, you can become a Patreon to see my videos first, get my special Patreon only podcast, help me buy sausages and get access to live Zoom shows where I try out new material and have special guests:

I'm surprised you didn't highlight the appalling situation in the Ukraine, where women and children were being allowed to travel and the men staying to fight. Police in the railway stations were adding insult to injury by routinely assuming the gender of those people wishing to travel.

I still remember her appearing on some show or other, insisting that everyone should send their children to comprehensive schools, how they're a good as private schools and private schools were elitist and detrimental to society as a whole. Then the interviewer pointed out she sends her kids to private school!!! "I'm not talking about ME", she protested, which just goes to show the real mindset of the left. They're better, superior to you and I. The principles of leftism only apply to us while they hover above the common herd, emporer like, to be revered and worshipped. Can't watch the bitch, have to be honest. TV goes off straight away when she's on it.

I still think that the dumbest thing is the university of Milan banning a lecture series on the works of Dostoevsky, because he was a Russian writer. Not only did he die 141 years ago, but he was even sentenced to death in 1849 (later commuted to time in a Siberian prison camp) because he read forbidden books with his friends. This is pure mass formation psychosis.

Still there are exclusively straight white couples in adverts in most European countries. I'd love to see a little bit of realism. But when Lidl showed one (one!) black model in one of their leaflets in the Czech Republic, hell broke loose. You complain about wokeism in the UK, fine, I would too, it's terrible. But it's also terrible how little equality we have in huge parts of Europe. Hungary: marriage defined as "union of a man and a woman" in the constitution. Czech Republic: major resistance against marriage for all because etymologically, the Czech word for marriage contains "man" and "woman" although nobody understands medieval Czech anymore and linguistic curiosities shouldn't be any foundation for policy...
@DieFlabbergast
@DieFlabbergast Жыл бұрын
@@cioccolateriaveneziana Let's not exaggerate: it does no good for either side. Most conservative-leaning people couldn't give a damn if gay people live together and have the same legal protections as straight couples; they just don't want such civil partnerships referred to as "marriage" (in whatever language). The institution of marriage (between a man and a woman, although I shouldn't have to say this) is thousands of years old and plays an important part in every major religion. You cannot separate the words "marriage," or manželství, or свадьба, or 結婚, or 婚姻 from the concept of a union of man and woman blessed by God or the gods (even if you don't believe in gods).
@cioccolateriaveneziana
@cioccolateriaveneziana Жыл бұрын
@@DieFlabbergast Yes you can. Just as society evolved from polygamy to arranged marriage to love marriage. For thousands of years, the expression "marriage" or alternatives referred to various concepts. And about the etymology: I don't think we should let the genetic origins of a word let decide today's policy. Otherwise we would only have "ladies" and "Frauen" who were born into noble families. That's just one example of a shift of meaning.

Of course no one wants to see Ukrainians die, But the Ukraine has been bombing and killing the ethnic Russians in the Donbass region of the Ukraine since 2014. Indeed America aided and abetted the coup in the Ukraine in 2014 that brought us here. Bottom line like him or hate him Putin was not going to sit there forever watching his countrymen and women die at the hands of the Ukrainians without taking action. You're always a joy to watch - bang on target again (poor analogy in current climate) - point of order ref Diane Abbott. She did not put her shoes on the wrong feet - she managed to put on 2 different left foot shoes! Actually that's quite impressive ineptitude - most folk would have to concentrate to do that. The only slight upside to this whole Ukrainian tragedy, is the Guardianistas getting frothy at the gash about black/poc refugee-refugees and the fact that unlike Ireland we have not thrown our borders open to everyone. Perhaps forgetting that once in the 'Auld Sod', they can hop across the border to NI, thence to the mainland and Utopia.

2 wrongs don't make a right, but while we rightfully condemn Russia's invasion of a sovereign country, we should resist couching our condemnation in any sort of moral superiority. Our invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen have a death toll of innocent civilians that so far dwarfs that of Putin's illegal war. As bad as this is now, it could very easily and quickly get very much worse. We have people who say they are supporting Ukraine calling for outright attacks on Russia and to "stand up to Putin". At that point there might not even be a Ukraine to fight over.

The Russians were also in Afghanistan meddling. They tried to remove the Taliban the first time and failed. Russia has been trying to do what we've been trying to do in all of those countries pretty much if you look at it historically. They wanted to control the middle east and install pro russian leaders but failed. We wanted to install pro west leaders and also failed. We shouldn't be meddling anymore in that way. It's better to use policy to encourage change. Russia is just as much an aggressor as the US and it's allies are.

I agree some of the comments praising Putin are weird but I don't think we can be too surprised. What some on the right are aware of is that if the conflict reaches their country, it won't be the virtue signalling left who will be doing the fighting. In past conflicts it was fairly easy to see what you were fighting for. Now however you could find yourself fighting one oppressive regime to keep another in power. If I had any confidence that the left would learn a lesson from history I'd fight. They won't learn though, it's clear that most still want to try and do the mental gymnastics to convince themselves that it's somehow all Trump's fault. At least those on the right are better prepared for the shit show to come as they can at least use some logic and reason. To think that the young generation say they are suffering with their mental health due to Covid, how triggered will they be when it gets really serious? Good luck with your chosen pronouns and favourite hashtags.

What a very thoughtful comment! I mean it, I'm not being sarcastic. There are very few remaining that can see more than one point of view. While I don't agree with Russia attacking Ukraine, I can understand why they chose to do so and NATO's shenanigans were certainly part of it. Also the West has no moral leg left to stand on. We can't cry 'dictator' or 'human rights' after the last 2 years. We can't complain that they are doing exactly what the USA and UK did in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Serbia and no doubt others: at least Putin has a credible strategic reason.
@GaryBox

@@benchapple1583 Don't misunderstand me I think Putin is a monster. When I see his eyes he seems capable of anything. It's just that I see too many people commenting as if we are the good guys. There are degrees of evil and the West has shown it's no saint. In Russia Putin has been removing all political and media opposition. In the West we have more freedom to disagree and be critical. I'm free to describe Tony Blair as a war criminal and not be taken away to some Gulag. I don't like the direction of travel the West is heading in though. Big tech seems willing to shut down people's social media channels at a stroke. Even mass gatherings and protests in person are being made more difficult with new legislation. People try to 'cancel' the likes of JK Rowling for defending safe spaces for women and call her anti trans. It's become feelings over facts as far as gender is concerned (of course they will claim there is a difference between gender and sex but the end result for women is pretty much the same). The sad thing is I think much of this could have been avoided but all parties made mistakes after the collapse of the Soviet Union. I've never known the world be so divided and I don't see that changing. Whether it's Brexit vs Remain, Pro or Anti Trump or debates on Covid policy and vaccinations, some aren't willing to even debate and agree to disagree.

Kissing Putin's arse is one thing, but time will tell whether this move was a humungous mistake by a nutter surrounded by yes-men or a successful play by a master strategist. One thing missing from all the coverage is the precise rationale from Russia's perspective. What do they know about Ukraine and NATO/EU that would prompt such devastating intervention? Method or madness?
@TGuard00014

It’s entirely possible that it had nothing to do with NATO or any plans they had. Putin has always wanted to restore the glory and power of Russia but he’s getting old and running out of time. The west is exceptionally weak right now and if he delays they may regain their strength. No doubt China was pressuring him as it is a nice test run for Taiwan. Finally Putin has been under pressure at home, this move will either consolidate the Russian people behind him or it will lead to major internal chaos in Russia, Putin is banking on the first. He has used war as a way to drive Russians to him in the past.

Exactly. I look at Putin and his cold stare and he's frightening. However look at how the US reacted during Cuban missile crisis. If the US didn't like nuclear weapons on its doorstep, don't expect Russia to like it either. Think back to when the Soviet Union collapsed. Rather than support someone like Gorbachev who we could deal with, instead we moved on their weakness which paved the way for a Putin.

@@GaryBox You have misunderstood the intention of my comment. Putin is evil there is no mistake on that. What he is doing is an unprovoked act of unrepentant aggression against a sovereign people who have done nothing to deserve this. My point was that Putin is dangerous and it is an act of ignorance to think him stupid and a thug because it dismisses him as a petty dictator instead of a man attempting to shape the global balance of power in his favour.
@GaryBox

@@Rexor3862 I agree he's evil but the West needs to learn from history. When USSR collapsed Gorbachev was in power. We had a choice and decided to take advantage of their weakness which leads to someone like Putin taking power. I have no issue with encouraging former Soviet countries to become democratic. I support them building up their military so that it's a effective defensive deterrent. Siting nuclear weapons on Russia's doorstep though will be seen as offensive rather than defensive. We are now left wondering if our best hope is that Putin will be toppled from within. If he is will we learn anything? If a country rich in natural resources like Russia falls who do you think will get there faster to claim the spoils, the West or China?
@Rexor3862
@Rexor3862 2 жыл бұрын
@@GaryBox The West did support Gorbachev unfortunately he wasn’t popular with his own people and they chose Yeltsin. The EU and NATO even offered Russia multiple times for joint operations not to mention to join NATO and the EU which Russia declined. As for the issue of basing ICBMs on the border of Russia is a pretext most nuclear weapons can cross the planet and hit Russia any especially if they are mounted upon submarines. The real issue here is why does Russia get to dictate the national security priorities of other sovereign states. And this sets a terrible precedent as if Putin sees Ukraine’s membership of NATO as a strategic threat what about Turkey? I mean dardanelles is the only route the Russian Black Sea fleet can be put to sea and that can be easily blockades the same with the Baltic fleet. This is very real threat as we have seen Russia threaten Finland and Sweden. So it is stupid to think this will stop with the Ukraine. I thought Putin only wanted to secure the separatist regions but he has shown he will if given time slowly reconstitute Russia’s iron grip over Eastern Europe. Let’s be clear we are all now living in a era of politics of interstate conflict. This could of been prevented if our leaders weren’t weak, globalist, social liberals who believe in utopia and not reality but here we are now.
@GaryBox
@GaryBox 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rexor3862 I agree that the timing of this is due to weak, liberal leadership in the West. I also agree that perhaps Putin sees Turkey as a threat. There are differences between Turkey and Ukraine though. In a Russian's mind there has always been a connection to Ukraine that doesn't exist with Turkey. I'd go further and say that I'm not convinced Putin wants to go further, I really doubt that's the case but of course I believe in sending a strong message about consequences of actions. I have visited Russia twice and have friends there. I've often spoken with them about how Gorbachev was liked in the West but not at home. It's similar to Thatcher, who they seem to respect in Russia but who was considered a divisive figure in the UK. Like you said we are where we are. It's demoralising to hear people still try and blame this on Trump. Biden saying that we've enacted sanctions and let's check back in a month is exactly the weakness Putin was hoping for. Hypocritical policies where you stop nuclear and fossil fuels in your own country, only to buy fossil fuels from another country also don't help. Any idiot could foresee this happening. On the topic of hypocrisy the West needs to look at itself. I agree this invasion by Putin is obscene. However is it really that different to us invading Iraq on a lie that they had WMD that could be launched at us in minutes?
