Obviously this run is just for fun as this isn't a real University Magikarp. I will say though that because that was a Japanese only event, it is still *theoretically* impossible to beat Gen 1 with a Magikarp.... UNLESS you trade with Gen 2. There was an English Language event New York City Pokemon Center, where Magikarp got Reversal (needs to be deleted) but also BUBBLE. That is the only way anyone could have legitimately beaten these games with Magikarp. Don't really have a point just never had a good place to mention this haha.

Yeah the bubble Magikarp with Reversal is pretty cool! I want to try that one in gen2 at some point. Of course all these runs are just for fun, since it's only possible to start Yellow with a Pikachu! (Which was always very frustrating for me as a kid!)

His cousin actually had a Toys R Us event Mew on it that must have been from 1999 or so. However, if you wanna be super safe, you want to transfer the Pokemon to a Stadium game. The probability of your trainer ID alone matching the University Magikarp's trainer ID would be 1/65535 since that is the possible range for IDs from 00000 to 65535. However you would also have to match the trainers name which if you include all the potential combinations of characters that would push the odds to 1/2,147,483,648 in Gen 1 and Gold/Silver since the OT can only be male but in Crystal the odds go up to 1/4,294,967,296 since the OT can be male or female. From Gen 3 onward, it's impossible to have a traded Pokemon obey you accidentally by matching trainer ID, secret ID, and trainer name because the catch location of the Pokemon is listed as "Met in trade" which actually controls whether the Pokemon is owned or not in Gen 3 onward.
@anlev11 Жыл бұрын
Does the trainer name actually matters? Because you could just transfer the Magikarp to a cartridge, see it's trainer name and then initiate a new game in another cartridge and give the same trainer name, just needing to reset for the ID. I calculate the expected number of attempts needed to match the ID considering the 1/65535 sucess rate. It would have 50% probability to get it within 45426 attempts, or 90% probability to get it within 150901 attempts.
@MatthewIceDragon Жыл бұрын
@@anlev11 Yeah that is true unless the OT name was randomized too you would just have to name your character the same name as the OT and then try and roll for that ID over and over. That's where a tool assisted run would be useful since it would get that roll first try lol.

This is based on my memory so it may be untrue since I researched this a long time ago. As you said none of these exist legitimately anymore and I doubt people would remember such specific details especially since they were likely children at the time as it was published in a magazine aimed at primary schoolers. I'm assuming Bulbapedia doesn't have this info because there's no paper evidence, unlike other rare Pokémon like event Mews etc where they displayed the summary of the Pokémon (Magikarp only had the moves displayed)

45:29 In gen 1, there are 65536 possible trainer IDs, so the odds of getting one that matches the event Magikarp are 1/65536. The average number of resets happens to be equal to 1/p, which is 65536 resets on average. At about 51 seconds to start a new game and check your starter's ID at 4x speed, this would take about 38.7 days of resetting nonstop to get a trainer ID that matches the event Magikarp's ID. Fun fact, in gen 3 onwards, there is a second 5 digit secret ID with another 65536 possible values, so the odds of generating a new save that matches an existing pokemon's trainer ID + secret ID in gen 3 would be 1 in 4,294,967,296. At about 24 seconds (at 4x speed) per reset to check trainer ID in Pokemon Sapphire version, this would take about 3,269 years of resetting to get a new game with the same trainer ID and secret ID.

Speaking of obedience, in Scarlet and Violet it seems like if you catch a Pokemon that's beyond the level cap yourself, you'll have obedience issues until you have enough badges. Dunno if you experienced this in your game or not, but it's something I noticed with getting to Casseroya Lake before finishing the gyms.
@J3Puffin Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve encountered that too. Considering the open-world nature of the game I think it’s a logical change - wouldn’t it “suck” to just randomly Fast Ball a Pokémon and steamroll the game with it? (Exact meaning of suck may vary by individual, from a game design viewpoint that is certainly not a good outcome)
@HighPriestFuneral Жыл бұрын
A neat change! But if you level up a Pokemon to the same threshold it will have no issues?

Man... Disobedience was brutal in Gen 1...
@allanturmaine5496 Жыл бұрын
It's still brutal. I tried to train a Gengar in Violet, and it was useless for half the run. If I'd been more direct about the route I may have had less issue, but I wanted to explore the game a bit, not just rush the gyms.

Thank you for the last thing you said in the video. Also I don't watch it in the background. I appreciate your layout and looking even at the stat increases. That must be a lot of work. Great content. Also, finally a video with the fish that could, that actually managed to do it somehow. Love your channel. I don't wanna torture you but one day we'd like to see a magikarp with tackle, bubble, dragon rage and no splash take on the challenge, if it's possible to customize. Thanks for the content 🙌🏻

I want to use the Bubble magikarp in the future! Maybe a year or two from now though.
@benmorr Жыл бұрын
Haven't watched the full video but I feel like using splash at the beginning of the game is more optimal given how frequently it disobeys and uses the wrong move. If you only have two moves it's always going to use the other one. I could be wrong though!

Instead, the problem was actually around the same area except the limit was Erika as opposed to the trainer. That literally means University Magikarp is not any better save for being able to hit ghosts

I guess in being able to beat Erika? I don’t see that as a meaningful difference; both Magikarp are stuck at the same place.

I absolutely love that when you beat a trainer only to flee inside diglett cave after each fight it felt like in your waning sanity that cave was your safety blanket like, "no, no. Too much, overwhelmed, back to diglett."
@fahkyew7776 Жыл бұрын
As of 25 minutes in, I think I know where this run ends. With 16 PP on Dragon Rage, even if Magikarp survives long enough to use all of its Dragon Rages, I don't think it can get past Agatha. 40*16 = 640, and I'm pretty sure Agatha's pokemon have a total of more HP than that. But maybe there's something I'm missing.

Interesting tidbit I learned during a recent game of Yellow; dig and teleport sometimes have different areas that one can use while the other can't, so it may be beneficial to have both a diglett and an abra with you. I only mention this because you say you couln't dig out of some spaces but didn't say you tried teleport, too.
@williambaker5730 Жыл бұрын
What if you made the ‘impossible’ tier pokemon a team? Like see if it’s possible to beat the game with a team of caterpie, metapod and magikarp? (Or just two of them)
@nustacular Жыл бұрын
Awesome run, though I’m only half way through. It seems that maybe the best option would be to trade to other games: GSC and use the move deleter to remove splash. So you can either Dragon rage or struggle. Pokémon Stadium 2: if you can grind up a team to beat the game there was a move reminder. But I remember the game being insanely hard I’m not sure if this is against the rules: grinding levels in GSC after you have all the badges for obedience just to speed things up for you

In Gen I, there are 65535 possible trainer IDs, which is 1/8 of shiny odds in Gen II-V. Starters have a 1/8 chance to be female, so the chance of getting the University Magikarp's trainer ID are the same as getting a full odds female shiny starter (from prior to Gen VI).

Another disobedience plus (not that magikarp can use it) is that it always goes on the SELECTED move's priority, which means that it passes to the new move, possibly providing a nice boost.

I ran a University Magikarp through Pokemon Red back in the day, so it was very cathartic getting to watch someone else suffer the pain of early-game obedience and only 10 Dragon Rage PP ^_^ (Plus you also fought Professor Oak! More runners should do that, doesn't feel like a full run without the true final boss >:)
