Over engineered money pits? So what else is new with German cars. A friend of mine had a German convertible in the 1990s, and the bushings for the convertible top would slightly wear and they'd have to be replaced or they would bind, he had a whole bag of these bushings. Remember the car commercial joking about German cars about how one must first shim and rebalance the wipers blades? It goes back even farther than that. My grandfather was the type to try a lot of different kinds of cars, and bought a Mercedes, and if you think some domestic or Japanese brands are bad about finding ways to weasel out of honoring warranty coverage (in my experience, both Japanese and the one American brand I've had all do a pretty good job with warranties) you've obviously not had a German brand. Oh, BTW, my boss is German but working here as a permanent resident alien, and he absolutely despises German cars, won't touch them with a ten foot pole, thinks that German engineering is greatly overrated and that so many Germans think it is so good he chalks up to a national delusion. Germans do seem to be very good at deceiving themselves. Another instance of it was the Audi brake problem.

And all these people crowing that we should be more like Germany or Europe, but Germany would be among the 5 poorest US states if it were a US state, and that was BEFORE their current economic malaise. Pretty bad when the wealthiest European country is that poor, and France is even worse.

BMW had a sweet spot era in the early 2000's. They'd finally gotten over their long stretch of sour reliability records and actually got into the top 5 of Consumer Reports reliable sporty cars (mostly because of the 3 and 5 series). But now? They've gone model diversity nuts. And ridiculous complications that impact reliability all for... what? "The Ultimate Driving Machine" is now the "Ultimate Expensive Machine." They're focused more on seductive looks and in-cabin entertainment than reliability.

I remember my mother showing a Japanese seamstress a Sears catalog. That woman made our clothes from just the catalog pictures. • In the 1950's, peeps complained that Japanese cameras were just copies of German cameras. I worked at German new car dealers in the Seattle area for 20 years before I retired in 2014. I was continually amazed by the constant, very expensive issues that customers complained to me about. Then they would buy another new one! The basis of a lot of the issues was the horrible design and quality of the Bosch parts in the electrical systems. I could write a very long, very boring book about the disasters I witnessed, and the cartons of Kleenex I dispensed to upset clients. I drove shuttle van, and was on a first-name basis with hundreds of customers, who I saw literally every month. When I would gently suggest that they might have better luck with a Toyota or Honda, these geniuses would respond "I don't like Japanese cars". BILL

I had a 1975 VW Dasher I bought brand new and it was the most UNRELIABLE car I've ever owned. Why you ask? 2 words: ROBERT BOSCH. Everything electrical crapped out at least once: alternator, voltage regulators, sensors, and a wiring harness that smoked at about 1K miles out of warranty. This is without mentioning broken brake adjusters, A/T vacuum modulators, and sundry other items. I once voiced my anger with Bosch quality - or, more apropos, the lack thereof - in a dealership once. I said that the Germans must have lost the WW II tank battle at Kursk to the Soviets because all the German tanks had Bosch electrical systems that broke down. I saw 2 prospective customers leave the showroom and I was then asked to leave in no uncertain terms. Well, I was happy that I cost them a sale, anyway.

You might like to comment why Australians are waiting years to pay at least A$80,000 on a 70 series Land Cruiser that is so basic, not particularly comfortable, vinyl floors, wind up windows 5 speed manual gearbox, fm am radio. How often do you have to repair a wind up window mechanism? Just this year they are dropping the 4.5 litre V8 turbo diesel that produces a whopping (sic) 151kw and replaced with their 2.8 litre 4 cyd. turbo diesel that puts out 150kw with a six speed auto gearbox. (all lifted from the hi Lux and Prado models). We'll see how they last but that was all done to meet government emission and consumption requirements.

I have always bought Toyota, Lexus, Acura and Honda cars and I have never ever regretted buying one, and then I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee, ecodiesel .... it had more problems and recalls than all of my other cars combined over 30 years. lol . We do have a 4 year old Tesla, my wife drives it and zero problems with it so far, 78k miles.

I’ve just subscribed after listening to your spot on assessment of European cars and the economic smoke and mirrors of the automotive industry with government grants. As for plane seats- spot on once again. I drive a Japanese 4wd 1998 and it’s a beauty and running like a beast. Toyota. Thanks Scotty.

😐 I'm done with cars. I ride a bike now. I have a two cylinder engine which is my two legs. And my backpack is my trunk. And my engine is fueled by beer. Lol.

@@ShirlBussman 😳 I'm a grown man! A man with a belly "fuel tank" full of beer peddling down the sidewalk with no helmet on his head. I won't ride on the road and use the sidewalk. I drive a car when I need to. But not all the time. I have huge leg muscles now.

I enjoy listening to Scotty and he makes some good points. Recently a friend with a expensive German SUV told me he envied my Hyundai Santa Fe. I could not believe my ears but perhaps Scotty is correct in his assessment of the German car industry?

I'm not fat... I'm 6'2'' 225 lbs. That is not even close to being some kind of huge person...i really don't have much fat on me. But airline seats are painfully small for even me to ride more than an hour or so. Airlines need bigger seats and at least a foot more leg and knee room. Flying is ridiculous. I don't do it anymore.

The “recycling” is a great example. The people who run it want you, the consumer, to do all their work for them or they won’t accept the items. Most of them are finding themselves in the red because of the fancy trucks they bought with the government’s free money.

The vast majority of people who have trouble with their VW do zero maintenance and or do not do the simplest stuff it takes to keep what are mostly high performance vehicles running nicely and you’ve said it yourself. You can buy a boring car, live a boring life and drive a 06 or whatever crappy thing without a turbo but I’ll be passing on that and in my newer Atlas, which is fantastic BTW.

@@Jim_me I don't agree. The government actually both builds roads AND hires the work out. If GM was the lowest bidder, why not hire them???
