Hello Scotty, I need suggestions for oil grades. My car's mileage is 90,000 Kilometres. I am using Castrol Magnatec 10w-40. I was using the same grade with 30,000 Kilometres of mileage but a different brand. It's the first time I have been using Castrol. However, I want to shift to 5w-30. Is it safe to shift to this grade after using 10w40 for 70,000 Kilometres? Both grades are given on my car's manual. My city's maximum temperature in summer is 39 degrees Celsius, and in winter, it can go to 0 degrees. Please guide. I am counting on your opinion.

I remember an old coworker of mine was devastated when her car was ruined and wouldn't start. She was mortified and screaming because she thought she was so smart and knew everything, so what did she do wrong to her car? She did NO MAINTENANCE TO HER CAR AT ALL. NEVER HAD AN OIL CHANGE! Even when we told her she needed to do that, she argued with us that it did not need an oil change because it was only five years old! Remember she was so smart and knew everything. More than everyone else. That's why her car was DEAD.

I worked at a long term rental place for Uber drivers. Had a girl come in because the "bad car" we rented her "doesn't, like, go anymore". Turns out she was a real smart gal who knew a thing or two about doing things so when she saw the oil light had come on, she proceeded to fill it all by her little self with 5 QUARTS. She was so confident in bragging about having done this. The really funny thing is oil changes were included in the rental at no extra cost.

I used to work at an oil & fluid change shop, and the neglect ppl put their cars through is mind blowing! all too often I've drained the crankcase oil only to see slow flowing sludge coming out of an engine that's already at operating temperatures, or remove an oil filter that was clogged with sludge😣😣😣 Even before I had that job, I could never bring myself to go that long between intervals! I've owned some unreliable cars in the past. But I've stayed on top of my fluid change intervals, and I've rarely ever had problems afterwards besides the occasional mechanical repair needed in high mileage vehicles. I feel so much better knowing that My oil & trans fluid is clean, along with the typical Coil packs, plugs, cables, belts, hoses(cooling system flush) and the occasional radiator change, air filter, tires & alignment. I've never paid more than $3k for any of my cars, and they've all been reliable after taking care of the basics, and I end up driving those cars for years

LISTEN TO SCOTT!!!!!. I have a 30 year old engine with 340,000 miles. I change the oil every 2,000 miles using non-synthetic Castrol GTX and Fram Tough Guard throughout its entire life ONLY. I drive it hard too. The engine still has its original head gasket, original timing chain and guides for 30 years. I always let tge engine sit and idle for about 5 - 10 minutes before i move. The engine does not burn or lose oil. So, i am confirming what Scott said in this video.

I have never seen anyone dip the filter in the drained oil, that caught me by surprise. I just use a little of the new stuff I am using. My brother's father in law was a mechanic. He would buy synthetic oils and changed the oil filter after 3 months, then topped off the oil. He told me that back in the 80s. Synthetic was pretty expensive back then so would change 6 thousand miles doing that.

I drove it for 16 years, odometer quit working at 196k and continued to drive it for 5-7years more. GOD only knows how many miles I had on it. I also had the same clutch the WHOLE TIME. IT'S A SHAME I LET MY MOTHER CONVINCE ME TO SELL THE CAR, STILL RAN GOOD, NO LEAKS, GOOD GAS MILEAGE FOR THE WAY I DRIVE but was going to need a new top soon, air conditioning didn't work, needed paint job and interior work. I had just a new clutch and tires installed. 😮😢

Bring the engine temp up to "normal" operating temp before you pull the drain plug. This will help it flow better out into the drain pan. And move the drain pan out from under the oil filter when you put the new filter on. I failed to do this once and and the new, clean, unused filter slipped out of my hands and landed in the pan of dirty oil. That was $ down the drain and I learned and have never repeated this.

Now I help everyone with their cars, and would go up against an ASE certified mechanic any day of the week, unless your talking transmissions! lol! And trust me, do the same BEFORE you buy a home. Know how to fix stuff, you'd be surprised just keeping stuff "clean" helps keep it operating! If you own something, learn how it operates, you'll never have regrets.

Don't wait for something "to break" before fixing it. And stay away from Mexican auto parts. NAPA and O'Reilly's has the most American made auto parts - if you can afford it. AC Delco parts are "excellent", better than original GM parts on new cars. (also worked at Autozone). Delphi are Toyota aftermarket parts. I think AC Delco are the best aftermarket parts out there . Regardless if you own GM or not.

My dad's been using castrol edge 5W-30 (we buy it in costco cause canadian costco's sell it for a decent price) in our mercedes for the last 20ish years and it barely burns any oil. That's preety good for a mercedes after 20 years of abuse. The exterior is falling apart but the main parts and interior are still fine.

@@Vertikala-pc5ig Usually get it on sale, but in Costco its in bulk. Its a 5 liter container and you get 3. Its currently $140 cad plus tax for 3. Which makes it like $47 cad plus tax. My Costco has it on sale every year so I try to get a few boxes and keep them well contained in my garage waiting for use. Other stores sell it for 10-30 dollars more per container. I reccomend looking around getting it on sale and keeping a few containers of it for the next few oil changes.

Also, I happen to have a VVT solenoid for the intake side sitting here right now...just don't want to get into it right now because they have a history of breaking off when attempting to remove them, piece that gets stuck inside engine has to be drilled out. That is a whole nother story.

The other thing about cheap filters is they will stop filtering, and in many cases, clogged up and collapse and then when they do, either you have a massive leak if the canister ruptures or if the filter material breaks apart, then you have junk flowing around in your engine oil. Best to spend a few bucks more and get a premium filter (the price difference in most cases is $10 or less and well worth it, especially if you're going 5,000+ miles). I generally have used Bosch or Wix filters (both are good quality filters and are generally better than even the OEM filters which are only designed for about 5,000 miles).

Do not use a long breaker bar to tighten the oil plug. A standard length ratchet or wrench will get it plenty tight. You won't have to use a long bar to get it off at the next oil change. Don' t strip the plug by using too big a wrench. C' Mon Scotty, you know this!
