When you cast mend the line by lifting the line and pointing the rod tip upstream this will take the bow out of the line ,that way when striking at a take you don't have a lot of slack line to take up learning this tip will get you into contact with fish faster and lesser missed takes. Keep up the excellent videos Scotty very enjoyable.

One of the many armchair professionals here. Firstly what a great adventure. Beautiful country. So my tips for ya 1. Strip the fly line so it's always taut in the water ready for you to hook up to that pretty rainbow or brown and avoid the incident at approx 13.40 minute mark. 2. There is no need to scale a trout unless you really want to. just fry that thing up or better yet, get a smoker. 3. Wet your hand first when handling trout. It will help them remain protected from parasites and disease. I don't think any other fish has bought more pleasure to fishermen than trout. How good are they.

Are trout good eating or is it more of just a sport?
@cthorno2991
@cthorno2991 2 жыл бұрын
@@RyanYoxo always depends on your taste. I like them. I'll take one and throw the rest back. I also fly-fish because it's amazing, it takes me to beautiful places and the fly, rod and casting is art in my opinion. There are some schools of thought on trout. They are introduced and eat the local galaxia and other aquatic native animals in Australia so some have no hesitation about taking them. Others argue that it's cruel just like normal fishing. I also use barbless hooks to try to do the least amount of harm to the fish. Go grab some and see if you like it.

C Thorno cheers! I’ll have to try it, was always keen to fish but only if I’m going to cook it up. I moved out to the Victorian high country last year and wouldn’t mind learning to fly fish

Lets be honest, trout are only here to entertain a very small percentage of the population, and do enormous harm to the local fish. Its a pity trout are not tastier.

I never scale trout. I leave the head and tail on as well. I don't personally eat the skin but I think some do. When you are eating it you should be able to pull the spine etc out easily, it one piece like Tom and Jerry. I'm loving your videos. I'm a pensioner in Northern England and the weather is grey here. Envy and jealousy have just set in. I've never backpacked before but you are in a really tranquil time of your life. As a self taught Flyfisher, I've caught many Trout in my life but at the age of 67, my legs are not up to the hard slog any more. I sensed the exhilaration that you did, when catching and landing a trout and eating it was the crescendo. Yum Yum.I get great pleasure in watching your vids as it takes me back to the feeling I used to get when you are surrounded by nothing but the wilds of our great country.You don't have to be a professional fly fisher person, just put the right fly in the right place and you're on the money.Keep up your inspiring adventures. I'll continue to watch.

Cooking tip: So a helpful tip when cooking any item, if you add oil to a cold pan, then heat the pan, the item has a very high chance of sticking. However, if you heat up the pan fairly well first, THEN add your room temperature-ish oil, then swirl the oil round the pan a bit and let the oil come up to temp for a moment, your pan will now be non stick. This works especially well with cast iron, but works with all metals.

@@ScottysGoneWalkabout np :D But I should add that if you heat the pan way too hot, depending on the oil, it possibly won't work as you will surpass what the oil can handle temperature wise.

@@ScottysGoneWalkabout Hey Scotty, nice video, first time watching! Two things about the cooking, make sure the trout is as dry to touch as you can get it, and Wombat is right on, your oil should be hot, but not flaming. The other, is to add your garlic toward the end, it just needs a couple of minutes. Cheers from Canada!

Ok, I've seen enough and now I can't contain myself. The floatant you use on your drys - when you apply it directly to the fly, it will absolutely saturate the fibres on your fly and weigh it down unnecessarily. Try this . . . apply a tiny amount to your thumb and/or forefinger first and then rub them together (warms it up and thins it out), using thumb and forefinger apply it meticulously to the fur and feathers - not too much, apply it sparingly. Your dry flies will float for longer. I always enjoy your work and good to see you get amongst them for a change. Cheers.

If your struggling for takes put a nymph on as the point fly and a wet fly about 2x feet above on a little tag line, look up how to nymph the rapids you will catch so many more fish, I do agree dry fly fishing is the most fun and I only nymph when the drys just aren't working.

... Great video ... My style of simple outing ... Pack in ,, enjoy the bit of nature ,, set up simple camp a relax a bit ... scout the river or lake ,, fish any new fly's made up then pull out old favorites ... You found a great spot with awesome brown trout .... being solo it only takes one for a meal ,,the rest are just for the test of skills and to give the fish a little exercise .... ..... Trout have small scales ,no need to put in the work to remove them ,,,, while frying them the skin will come off anyway ...After frying ,, put your fork behind the backbone and pull the skeletal bones out forward ,, will remove all the bones at once .... pink meat of brown trout are the Best ... carry along a small shaker of lemon pepper for seasoning to enhance flavor ... maybe coat with corn meal for a little crust ... Man all this thought is making me hungry and longing for the high country .... and favorite spots near me are still iced over .... I have to trek and camp with you .... Stay Safe ....

I must say, you have become very decent at fly casting! If you miss a dry fly take like before the cooking session, just cast the fly two meters upstream of the missed rise again immediately. Sometimes you get lucky. Small trout like that, you don't to scale at all. Cheers! Edit: Also when casting over a current upstream like at 29:56 give your line an upstream mend right away. This helps keep your line parallel to your fly and reduces drag.

Love all your videos. Watch a video on how to mend your fly line when you fish. Sometimes the fly line will get ahead of the fly and drag it, that can turn a fish off. I remember the fist video you tried a fly rod, you have gotten really good Really fast.

Titiqaqa is a large, deep, freshwater lake in the Andes on the border of Bolivia and Peru. Thanks for another great adventure, The trout looked very appetising. TIP: quite often fish will come on the bite just prior to a change in the weather mate. Once the change has occurred they will often go off the bite.

I learned of your channel through my father, who's a big fan of your btw. I like what I see and I think it's great that you're openly honest about not knowing everything, nor pretending to be an expert. Anyway, keep up the great work and I just subbed to your channel as well. Cheers and hello from Canada!

Scotty I think your fire did you a favour as I think you normally cook over too much heat. Pity you didn't have a splash of white wine to add at the end to make a quick sauce! Try to take a bit of slack line out when it's drifting. A bit is OK because it can help stop dragging but you need to be able to set the hook when you lift. You are going great now, inspired me to head to the park for some casting practice!
